Development Of High-Fidelity Simulations For Srnas: Airway Fire And Venous Air Embolism, Ashlyn Russo, Brooke Skaggs May 2024

Development Of High-Fidelity Simulations For Srnas: Airway Fire And Venous Air Embolism, Ashlyn Russo, Brooke Skaggs

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) must swiftly recognize and treat high-risk, low-incidence complications in a high-stress environment. Most SRNAs do not experience high mortality or rare emergencies throughout their training. This project involves developing and implementing two high-fidelity simulations for airway fire and venous air embolism (VAE) to help SRNAs improve their skills in a safe learning environment. Objectives for this project include examining current evidenced-based literature to determine the efficacy of high-fidelity simulation on the SRNA’s knowledge and performance post-simulation, determining the incidence, pathophysiology, and treatments for airway fires and VAE, creating two high-fidelity simulation scenarios, and integrating the …

Educating Srnas On Barriers And Facilitators Of Clinical Learning, Mesud Dedic, Richard Heuermann May 2024

Educating Srnas On Barriers And Facilitators Of Clinical Learning, Mesud Dedic, Richard Heuermann

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

A national survey of 143 Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists (SRNAs) conducted by Clancy and Bruinius (2022) revealed that factors impeding effective SRNA clinical education include unstable preceptorship, hostile environments, limited autonomy, and heavy didactic burdens. Clancy and Bruinius (2022) also found that facilitators of SRNA clinical education include rapport with preceptors, effective feedback, strong clinical site orientation, and beginning of day discussions. This project aimed to enhance second-year SRNAs' clinical success by mitigating these evidence-based barriers and employing these evidence-based facilitators by developing a presentation for SRNAs and assessing its effectiveness through a pre-implementation survey and post-implementation survey. The literature …

Developing An Advocacy Campaign To Minimize Barriers To Srna Political Awareness, Alejandra Villescas May 2023

Developing An Advocacy Campaign To Minimize Barriers To Srna Political Awareness, Alejandra Villescas

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Continuous advocacy and political participation have secured better working conditions and recognition of certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs), translating into better patient care. This project aimed to launch an advocacy campaign targeting student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs). A pre-lesson survey was designed to identify SRNAs’ political participation barriers and assess their political literacy. Additionally, a lesson was developed to help SRNAs’ understand CRNA advocacy. To evaluate the educational tool, a post-lesson survey was created. These materials were distributed via email to all SRNAs (n=320) enrolled in a CRNA program in Illinois. Only 51 students completed the pre-lesson survey, and 39 …

The Effectiveness Of Using The Anatomage Table As A Learning Adjunct To Peripheral Nerve Blocks Among Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists, Paige Dickey, Melissa Gerlach, Mary Zerlan May 2022

The Effectiveness Of Using The Anatomage Table As A Learning Adjunct To Peripheral Nerve Blocks Among Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists, Paige Dickey, Melissa Gerlach, Mary Zerlan

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Abstract

In anesthesia programs across the country, learning advanced level human anatomy and physiology concepts provides a large foundation for which skills used in clinical application are learned. Student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) are clinically trained to perform a variety of invasive procedures in practice including peripheral nerve blocks (PNBs). This project aimed to implement a supplemental, hands-on learning activity to improve overall PNB education, ultimately improving patient care and safety. A series of guided lessons were created to help the students walk through the anatomy of PNBs utilizing the Anatomage table (AT). SRNAs attended a workshop where they went …

Identifying Facilitators And Barriers For A Successful Student Registered Nurse Anesthetist’S Clinical Experience, James Clancy, Adam Bruinius May 2022

Identifying Facilitators And Barriers For A Successful Student Registered Nurse Anesthetist’S Clinical Experience, James Clancy, Adam Bruinius

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Student registered nurse anesthetists experience a wide variety of barriers and facilitators to their clinical education; often rotating through several clinical sites during their nurse anesthesia educational program (NAEP) tenure. Existing evidence suggests SRNAs must be proficient in seeking, accepting, and utilizing feedback from clinical preceptors (Algiraigri, 2014). Accepting constructive criticism may be challenging for SRNAs as they are highly skilled, competent nurses who are now entering rigorous NAEPs as novices. Reverting from preceptor to preceptee can be a difficult transition for SRNAs. This project aimed to identify barriers and facilitators to a successful SRNA clinical education through a literature …

Development Of Evidence-Based Rubrics And Instructional Videos For Anesthesia Induction Sequences, James P. Canny, Nathan M. Carroll May 2022

Development Of Evidence-Based Rubrics And Instructional Videos For Anesthesia Induction Sequences, James P. Canny, Nathan M. Carroll

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Safe and effective induction of anesthesia is a vital component of any anesthesia provider’s skill set. Although both typical sequence and rapid sequence induction are common procedures, much variance in technique exists among providers. Clear, standardized rubrics are an important element in teaching these skills. The purpose of this project was to update the typical and rapid sequence induction rubrics for the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Nurse Anesthesia Program with the current best practice recommendations. To utilize and reinforce observational learning, instructional videos were also created to accompany the updated rubrics. These materials were presented to the student registered nurse …
