Evaluating The Use Of Standardized Patients In Teaching Spiritual Care At The End Of Life, Margaret Fink, Luanne Linnard-Palmer, Barbara Ganley, Olivia Catolico, William Phillips Oct 2014

Evaluating The Use Of Standardized Patients In Teaching Spiritual Care At The End Of Life, Margaret Fink, Luanne Linnard-Palmer, Barbara Ganley, Olivia Catolico, William Phillips

Margaret Fink

Background Because of migration patterns to the United States over the past 250 years, there has always been cultural and religious diversity. Healthcare providers must have the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to care for patients whose beliefs differ from their own, particularly during critical life events such as birth or death. An end of life care simulation experience for BSN students involving standardized patients (SPs) representing 3 well known religious groups was implemented. Method Fifty-four students participated in this quasi-experimental study comparing a treatment group (n=30) that experienced a simulation activity with a control group (n=24). Results/Conclusions The results …

Developing Nursing Students’ Spiritual Awareness Through Simulating End-Of-Life Care Of A Catholic Patient, Margaret Fink

Margaret Fink

This paper addresses the State of the Art Teaching Strategy of Simulation to assess the ways in which nursing students address spiritual needs of patients. Concepts of spiritual care and conflict resolution for the Catholic patients’ family members who were not in agreement about the end-of-life plan of care are addressed. This paper addresses cultural sensitivity, an Essential component of Nursing Education according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. (AACN). This paper was awarded a 2014 NACN Grant).

Testing A Mnemonic On Response Skills During Simulated Codes, Luanne Linnard-Palmer, William Phillips, Margaret Fink, Olivia Catolico, Natalie Sweeny May 2013

Testing A Mnemonic On Response Skills During Simulated Codes, Luanne Linnard-Palmer, William Phillips, Margaret Fink, Olivia Catolico, Natalie Sweeny

Margaret Fink

Background Baccalaureate nursing students rarely have the opportunity to practice emergency response skills. Simulation gives students the ability to practice emergency procedures in an environment that is safe. Method Nursing students’ skills accuracy and confidence ratings were assessed before and after an instructional module that incorporated a mnemonic, named ABCD-COPIME, to improve emergency response techniques to a simulated code blue scenario. Seven nursing students completed 7 trials of responding to a code blue simulation. After each trial, skill accuracy was assessed with a skills checklist, and after Trials 1, 4, and 7, each student’s confidence was measured by self-report. A …

Teaching Information Literacy Skills To Undergraduate Nursing Students: A Collaborative Approach, Suzanne E. Zentz, Kimberly J. Whalen Dec 2012

Teaching Information Literacy Skills To Undergraduate Nursing Students: A Collaborative Approach, Suzanne E. Zentz, Kimberly J. Whalen

Suzanne E Zentz, DNP, RN, CNE

Background

An expectation of baccalaureate nursing education is to prepare nurses to implement evidenced-based practice (EBP). This expectation extends far beyond a basic understanding of the research process. BSN prepared nurses must be able to effectively and efficiently identify, analyze, and synthesize evidence (AACN, 2008). The acquisition of information literacy skills is foundational to the development of EBP.

Implementation

The study took place at a College of Nursing within a mid-sized, faith-based university located in the Midwest. Historically, students enrolled in their senior level undergraduate nursing research/EBP course underwent one library instruction session with the nursing librarian to reinforce search …

The Use Of Simulation For Pediatric Oncology Nursing Safety Principles: Ensuring Competent Practice Through The Use Of A Mnemonic, Chemotherapy Road Maps And Case-Based Learning, Luanne Linnard-Palmer

Background and Significance Caring for patients with cancer is becoming more common in acute and critical-care settings. According to the American Cancer Society (2010), cancer is the second leading cause of death in the nation. In any setting, nurses can encounter patients experiencing cancer care anywhere along the cancer care continuum. This includes recent diagnosis, induction chemotherapy, maintenance therapy, recovery, remission, or relapse and hospice care. Nurses need to be ready to respond to the unique needs of the cancer patient, whether the care is focused on adult or pediatric patients. Baccalaureate or associate degree nursing education does not typically …

Academic Safety During Nursing Simulation: Perceptions Of Nursing Students And Faculty, Barbara Ganley, Luanne Linnard-Palmer Jan 2012

Academic Safety During Nursing Simulation: Perceptions Of Nursing Students And Faculty, Barbara Ganley, Luanne Linnard-Palmer

Luanne Linnard-Palmer

Background Nursing simulation is said to be a safe learning environment. However, research and anecdotal information suggest it may be safe for patients but not academically safe for students. Academic safety is defined. Method Nursing students (n = 101) and faculty (n = 24) from schools in the San Francisco area completed online surveys to describe an academically safe learning environment. Results/Conclusions Faculty and students defined academically safe as supportive, and a climate where freedom to learn and grow is enjoyed by all.

Nur 300: Individual Clinical Enrichment Building Bridges To Professional Practice, Freda Sharp, Bridget Roberts

Bridget R. Roberts

Objectives: Explain the concept of role transition as a challenge for students transitioning to the role of beginning professional practitioner. Discuss regulatory and administrative differences between service-based externships and educationally-based experiences. Appraise the value of an educationally based clinical enrichment experience for students approaching graduation. Utilize insights gained and lessons learned through the ongoing evolution of a program-based clinical enrichment course.

Mentoring: A Nurse Educator Survey, Connie Hubbard, Kathleen Halcomb, Brenda Foley, Bridget Roberts Sep 2010

Mentoring: A Nurse Educator Survey, Connie Hubbard, Kathleen Halcomb, Brenda Foley, Bridget Roberts

Bridget R. Roberts

Mentoring promotes success throughout the careers of nurse educators. This pilot study discusses findings from a survey administered at the 18th Annual Nurse Educator Conference in the Rockies. Facilitators of and barriers to mentoring were identified by participants and clustered into themes by researchers. The findings are useful to associate degree nursing programs because issues surrounding the nurse educator shortage are addressed. Strategies to develop effective mentoring programs to assist in recruiting and retaining qualified nurse educators are discussed.

Developmental Disabilities: Improving Competence In Care Using Virtual Patients, Ida Slusher Jan 2008

Developmental Disabilities: Improving Competence In Care Using Virtual Patients, Ida Slusher

Ida Slusher

Nurse practitioners (NPs) have an increasingly important role in health care provision in the United States. However, most nurses report that they receive little or no clinical training in the area of developmental disabilities. A core development team consisting of NP faculty members from three universities, one physician assistant faculty member, the parents of children with developmental disabilities, and educational specialists developed two multimedia interactive pediatric instructional modules in CD-ROM format: one involving a child with Down syndrome and the other, an infant born at 26 weeks gestation. Participants were required to make decisions about proper clinical interaction throughout the …
