Richard J Fehring

Objective: To determine variability in the phases of the menstrual cycle among healthy, regularly cycling women. Design: A prospective descriptive study of a new data set with biological markers to estimate parameters of the menstrual cycles. Participants: One hundred forty one healthy women (mean age 29 years) who monitored 3 to 13 menstrual cycles with an electronic fertility monitor and produced 1,060 usable cycles of data. 006–Investigation Of Nurses' Reports On Symptom Severity And Symptom Management For Hospitalized Obese Children In The Perioperative Period, Luanne Linnard-Palmer

Luanne Linnard-Palmer

Childhood obesity is a significantly growing epidemic affecting a wide range of members of the pediatric population. In 2003, the American Academy of Pediatrics revealed that up to 30% of the nation's pediatric population are overweight or obese and that there is a potential that another 30% of the population are at high risk of becoming obese (Weightawareness.com). In the United States in 1991, there were only four states in which obesity rates were greater than 15%; by 2001, only one state had an obesity rate below 15%. In fact, obesity rates are greater than 20% in most …

Anomalia Anorretal: Relato De Caso Clínico / Anorectal Malformations: A Case Report, Everton Fernando Alves, Jucélia Lins Dos Santos Oliveira, Maria Do Rosário Martins

Everton Fernando Alves

Long-Term Mechanical Ventilation In A Critical Care Unit: Existing In An Everyday World, Patricia Johnson, Winsome St John, Wendy Moyle Feb 2006

Long-Term Mechanical Ventilation In A Critical Care Unit: Existing In An Everyday World, Patricia Johnson, Winsome St John, Wendy Moyle

Patricia Johnson

Aim: This paper reports a study to describe and interpret the meaning of being on long-term mechanical ventilation.

Background: Patients who require mechanical ventilation in a critical care unit for prolonged periods of time are typically sicker than those who are ventilated for shorter periods. Despite advances in treatment modalities for critically ill patients, many still require long-term mechanical ventilation for 7 days or more. Therefore, caring for a long-term ventilated patient is often an everyday occurrence for critical care nurses; however, there is insufficient evidence of the meaning of this experience from a patient perspective.

Method: We used an …

A Case Of Health Disparity, Donna Zucker Dec 2005

A Case Of Health Disparity, Donna Zucker

Donna M. Zucker

Although the incidence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in women is only slightly less than in men, women are poorly represented in research trials. As a result, not much is known about them as a subgroup. The specific aims of this article were to report on the problem, study methods, and findings focusing on HCV-positive women's health beliefs, how they identify and understand their health and illness states, and their explanatory models of illness behavior. A pilot study using three focus groups was conducted with women in the community, in recovery, and incarcerated. Two groups emerged: those with and those …

Attitudes, Intentions, And Ethical Stance Of Advanced Practice Nursing Students Toward Abortion Provision: Part One - Quantitative Findings, Richard Fehring

Richard J Fehring

The availability of pre-implantation abortion pills has increased the probability that advanced practice nurses (i.e., nurse practitioners and certified nurse midwives) will be instrumental in providing abortion services in the United States. The purpose of this pilot study was to determine the attitudes, intentions, and ethical stance of advanced practice nursing students towards the provision of abortion services. The study was a descriptive cross-sectional survey of 53 advanced practice nursing students at a private Midwestern Catholic university. A multi-item abortion attitude survey was administered to students in three required courses. The survey included a section on ethical principles and open-ended …

Detecting Suicide Risk In Adolescents And Adults In An Emergency Department: A Pilot Study, Victoria Folse, Katie Eich, Amy Hall, Joan Rupperman Dec 2005

Detecting Suicide Risk In Adolescents And Adults In An Emergency Department: A Pilot Study, Victoria Folse, Katie Eich, Amy Hall, Joan Rupperman

Victoria N. Folse

The investigators conducted a pilot study to detect suicide risk in adolescents and adults seeking treatment in an emergency department, as well as to test the reliability and validity of the 4-item Risk of Suicide Questionnaire (RSQ). This study expanded the implementation of the RSQ beyond its initial use with children and adolescents with psychiatric symptoms who were seeking treatment in a pediatric emergency department to include adolescent and adult patients in a Level I trauma center. An advanced practice psychiatric nurse verbally administered the RSQ to a convenience sample of 104 emergency department patients ages 12 to 82. Psychometric …
