Background: The blood-brain barrier (BBB), formed by the vascular endothelium, astrocytic foot processes, pericytes, is a highly selective barrier that is responsible for maintaining brain homeostasis and ultimately proper neuronal function. Disruption of the BBB, leading to increased BBB permeability, has been reported in several neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI).1 Loss of BBB integrity leads to the proliferation of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including TNFɑ, IL-1β, and IL-6.2 Moderate inflammation has a beneficial response in the system following an acute injury. COVID and HIV are both common diseases, with COVID affecting an estimated 775 million and HIV affecting 39 million people worldwide. Guillain-Barre is a rare but feared complication of immune stimulation in which the body generates autoantibodies against gangliosides, found in the nodes of Ranvier, in the myelin, and in the ganglia; causing ascending paralysis.

Systemic sclerosis is an autoimmune disorder characterized by microvascular damage and multiorgan fibrosis. These patients have a higher risk of cerebrovascular events, but it is difficult to develop strategies for prevention due to limited understanding of underlying pathophysiology.

A 76-year-old female with a history of systemic sclerosis presented to the emergency department with acute onset slurred speech, facial droop, and left arm pain with a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Stroke Scale of 1. Pituitary adenomas are common neoplasms arising from the pituitary adenohypophyseal cell. They can be classified by cell type, size and as nonfunctioning or functioning based on the secretion of pituitary hormones. Of these, approximately 48% are macroadenomas (>10 mm) and approximately 53% are prolactinomas. For how common these adenomas are, only 1 of 1100 persons manifest clinical symptoms1 rendering detection and clinical management challenging.

Background: Sleep deprivation and pain perception significantly impact one another through altered sleep parameters such as Total Sleep Time (TST) and Sleep Efficiency (SE). Particularly in neuropathic pain, disturbed sleep exacerbates pain by disrupting neurobiological mediators like opioids and serotonin. Our research examined how sleep loss affects pain in chronic conditions versus healthy individuals. This research underpins our analysis of how interventions, possibly nutritional, could improve sleep quality and modulate pain perception, exploring this relationship across diverse populations and conditions.

Patients suffering from Parkinson’s Disease will typically experience a range of motor and nonmotor symptoms. Characteristic signs of Parkinson’s include pill-rolling tremor, stooped posture, and shuffling gate. Patients with this disease can also develop oropharyngeal dysfunction, which can disable patients from meeting their physiologic needs. Understanding this disability and the changes in mastication kinematics can lead to potential future treatment. Our study induced Parkinson’s in rats with rotenone injections. Their jaw kinematics were identified through fluoroscopy of radio-opaque beads implanted into different areas of their jaws. Signs and symptoms of intracranial hemorrhage include facial droop, vision loss, motor deficits with extraocular movements, deficits with tongue movement, weakness in the arms or legs, sensation loss, and mental status change. Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) is defined by acute areflexic paralysis, usually starting in the distal lower extremities, and ascending to the upper extremities. It is associated with albuminocytologic dissociation, which involves elevated protein levels and normal cell counts in the cerebrospinal fluid. Growing evidence suggests a significant link between the composition of gut bacteria, dietary choices, and susceptibility to dementia. Deep learning is a method of artificial intelligence involving progressively layered neural networks to extrapolate patterns from data to provide predictions. Moreover, given the arduous nature required for examining CT scans for intracranial aneurysms, discovering ways to expedite this process is beneficial. The use of deep learning to evaluate CT angiograms for intracranial aneurysms has been sparsely studied. This literature review aims to determine the accuracy and reliability of deep learning to analyze CT angiograms in patients suspected to have intracranial aneurysms.

Hemiplegic migraine (HM) is a rare subtype of migraine with both familial and sporadic patterns. These migraines present episodically with reversible attacks of unilateral motor weakness. This strategic literature review categorizes MCI via the Jak-Bondi criteria and relates it to tES treatment paradigms. Commonly used outcome measures and regional brain mapping data synergizes associations between MCI pathology and potential tES treatment targets. Many neurotropic viruses cause more significant pathology in younger hosts as their brains are still developing. This experiment asked how central nervous system (CNS) viral-infections affect the development of synapses in the pediatric brain during infection and post-infection. Synaptogenesis is at its peak in pediatric mice (10 days old) and we hypothesized that a neurotropic infection could disrupt synaptic proteins. Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a prevalent and devastating neurodegenerative disorder that causes progressively worsening motor symptoms affecting locomotor and oropharyngeal function. There is limited research in animal models on swallowing dysfunction in PD. To examine how neurodegeneration in PD produces progressive impairment in the oropharyngeal and locomotor processes, rotenone, a type II mitochondrial inhibitor, was injected into Lewis rat models to reproduce a parkinsonian phenotype. We hypothesized that the animal models injected with the rotenone will exhibit both oropharyngeal dysfunction and locomotor deficiency with an increased deficit that correlates with prolonged treatment. This study examines the relationship between C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in 293 patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) from the Rowan-Virtua Regional Integrated Special Needs Center (RISN Center). Baseline CRP values were gathered from EMR and evaluated for CVD risk. ASD patients have increased prevalence of CVD risk factors, and the literature demonstrates a strong relationship between CRP and CVD risk in this population. Chronic pain is one of the most common complaints for adult patients. Chronic pain almost always includes a pharmacological approach which can involve opioids and non opioids. Non-pharmacological approaches are less commonly used by patients with chronic pain, despite the significant misuse of opioids in the treatment of chronic pain. There is a need for nonpharmacological therapies in the treatment of chronic pain patients to lessen the misuse of opioids. One underused form of nonpharmacological therapy for chronic pain is OMT. Background: Increased blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability is reported in both the neuropathological and in vivo studies in both Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and age matched cognitively normal, no cognitive impairment (NCI), subjects. Impaired BBB allows various vascular components such as immunoglobulin G (IgG) to extravasate into the brain and specifically bind to various neuronal surface proteins (NSP), also known as brain reactive autoantibodies (BrABs). This interaction is predicted to further enhance deposition of amyloid plaques.

Hypothesis: Interaction between extravasated BrABs and its cognate NSPs lower the expression of that NSPs in AD patients.

The United States has one of the largest growing prison populations in the world. A large amount of social and economic resources go towards the cost and maintenance of correctional facilities each year. Additionally, the current correctional programs are insufficient in assisting inmates with getting back to society; especially those with traumatic brain injury (TBI) who often remain undiagnosed and are usually treated unfairly in the prison system instead of receiving the appropriate help. Colloid cysts are benign growths commonly found in the third ventricle or at the Foramen of Monroe. They are composed of epithelial lining filled with gelatinous material that contain cholesterol, mucin, old blood and ions. Most colloid cysts are asymptomatic but can present with a variety of symptoms that range from headaches, diplopia, memory problems, and vertigo. They can also present as an obstructive hydrocephalus with the classic “Wet, wacky and wobbly” triad. Rarely colloid cysts have been reported to cause sudden death. They can present to the ED with any spectrum of these symptoms.
