Coping Style And Blood Pressure In African Americans: The Jackson Heart Study, Sandra Henley Williams

Objective: To explore the relationship between coping style and blood pressure in African American men and women.

Participants: This descriptive correlational study consisted of 4354 adult men (n = 1557) and women (n = 2797) enrolled in the Jackson Heart Study (JHS) who completed the Coping Strategies Short-Form (CSI-SF).

Results: Coping style mean score comparisons showed that JHS participants used engagement coping styles more than disengagement coping styles. The PFE subscale had the highest mean score (15.10 ± 2.63) with 75% of the PFE scores under 17.00 and 75% of EFE scores were below 15.00. Comparatively, 75% of PFD scores …

Clinicians repeated exposure to clients who have a history of traumatic experiences can lead to vicarious traumatization (VT), which is the potential for clinicians to experience negative consequences such as changes in their sense of self and worldview (McCann & Pearlman, 1990). Experiencing VT negatively impacts the clinician’s professional identity and counseling work with clients (Pearlman & Saakvitne, 1995a, 1995b; Saakvitne & Pearlman, 1996). Having an awareness of VT is a first step in protecting oneself from experiencing the potential consequences of counseling clients who have experienced trauma. The purpose of this study was to examine the addiction assessment procedures of marriage and family therapists. Addiction prevalence rates are growing therefore it is likely that marriage and family therapists will have clients affected by addiction. Undetected addictions can impede treatment and/or prevent the therapist from making appropriate treatment related decisions. Marriage and family therapists in Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico were invited to complete a web-based survey containing a series of questions about their assessment procedures for addiction as well as a series of demographics questions. The study was conducted at a group home located in Salem County where 6 people with severe mental illness reside. 4 of the 6 people are smokers and diagnosed with schizophrenia. The 4 people in the study all showed interest in quitting smoking. The subjects were given questionnaires weekly and were monitored daily to record the amount of cigarettes smoked. The questionnaires that were administered are the Intention to Quit/ Interest in Quitting, Withdrawal Symptoms, Relief of Craving, and a Smoking Related Symptoms Score. Through a system of patient-focused outcomes research which has employed a quality assurance system for tracking client progress in therapy, there has been consistent evidence that utilizing the system to identify those who are not responding to treatment and warning their therapist about the client’s risk significantly improves client outcomes in psychotherapy. Although outcomes have been improved, significant proportions of clients have treatment failures or see no improvement in therapy. Moreover, feedback to therapists appears to be most effective in improving outcomes for the minority of clients who are already at risk of treatment failure.

This dissertation study examines partnerships among a network of children's behavioral health organizations. Binge drinking (BD) entails excessive alcohol intake in a short time period. Despite numerous negative outcomes associated with BD and efforts to curtail it, rates remain steady. Thus, it is important to identify "who" binge drinks and "why" it occurs. Drawing from past research, I sought to replicate the link between trait narcissism and BD; moreover, I examined if overconfidence and confidence-based risk-taking assessed via the Georgia Gambling Task (GGT), explained why they did so. The Primary Care Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PC-PTSD) screen (Prins et al., 2003) is used by the Department of Defense to identify military members who are at increased risk of PTSD. This screen has been offered to all returning deployers since 2005. However, validation studies of PC-PTSD scores from military samples have seldom employed a significant number of female subjects and no published studies have examined it for gender bias. Recent studies have suggested that individuals with mental health conditions experience higher morbidity and mortality than individuals without mental disorders (Colton and Manderscheid, 2006; Osborn et al., 2007). Improving health outcomes for individuals with mental health conditions may require that providers, policymakers, and insurers pay particular attention to the primary care provided to these individuals. High-quality primary care means having a usual source of care and receiving appropriate preventive care, including routine physical examinations and recommended screenings. Some studies suggest that women with mental health conditions receive preventive care at lower rates than women without mental health conditions.

The perceptions of how Childhood Sexual Abuse (CSA) survivors perceive themselves and are perceived by others was evaluated. The aims of the study were to use Attribution Theory and the Traumagenic Model in evaluating whether perceptions were mediated by assertiveness, self-esteem, and interpersonal relationships. Additionally examining if CSA survivors differ in perceived levels of these attributes from non-CSA individuals within a college sample was of interest. 35% of the sample exhibited a variety of CSA experiences, with the majority being minimal contact experiences (i.e. sexual invitations or sexual hugging/kissing). This study examines the ethical considerations and ways of treating chronic suicidality in people with Borderline Personality Disorder. A sample of 62 clinicians working in the mental health field was surveyed. As predicted, the degree held by the participant, the type of organization the participant worked for, their occupation/title, type of treatment modality and years of experience were all related to how they responded to the questions on the survey. Unexpectedly, the sex of the participant was also related to how participants responded.

This study also explored the sources couples use to gather information, or rather where they receive premarital advice, and if it was helpful. Included in this study were husbands (n = 56) and wives (n = 56) who had been married less than one year, to classify them as newlyweds. This study examined the similarities and dissimilarities in abortion attitudes among counselors (CTs, n = 51), social workers (SWTs, n = 42), and nurses in training (NTs, n = 78), based on profession, age, race, gender, and religion. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance and standard multiple regression. It was predicted that profession, religion, age, gender, and race would predict the abortion attitudes of CTs, SWTs, and NTs in training. It was also predicted that the attitudes of CTs and SWTs would be most similar, and that both of these groups would hold more positive abortion attitudes than NTs. …

Gambling has been experimentally investigated using various types of gambling simulations designed to mimic the contingencies found in real-world games of chance. Findings from past risky choice research suggest that certain procedures used in existing gambling simulations may systematically increase levels of gambling. This study was an attempt to understand the presence and impact of staff expectancies related to psychotropic medication reductions conducted with persons diagnosed with mental retardation. Within a state operated developmental center in the Midwest, results indicated that direct support staff overwhelmingly expected individuals to get worse following such a reduction. These expectancies significantly impacted data recording practice leading to discrepant elevations reported by staff expecting deterioration. Finally, while written communication about planned psychotropic medication reductions did not appear to elevate data recording as was hypothesized, reductions were associated with increases in both behaviors and psychiatric symptoms. Idiosyncratic effects of Vyvanse™ (lisdexamfetamine dimesylate) and placebo were evaluated in a double-blind alternating treatments experimental design in this 4-week study. Direct, objective measures were combined with traditional behavior ratings to provide data sets to assess whether or not the prescribed stimulant medication showed detectable therapeutic effects for a child whose positive response to medication was not obvious via traditional subjective methods. Effects of medication on core ADHD symptoms, academic performance, and sleep in four children ages 10-12 with attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder. Potential side effects were also measured. In vitro fertilization (IVF) has been used successfully in the United States since 1981.
