The Opioid Epidemic has been a point of public health interest for the last twenty years. In this time, use of prescription opioids has grown exponentially, including use by pregnant women. The initial crisis has been focused on mitigating immediate problems such as lowering the significant loss of life in overdoses and providing support to cessation. Despite these advancements a separate phenomenon is on the rise: The rise in neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome in neonatal care and associated challenges for these children as they age.

To comprehensively capture the risk and protective factors of ACE exposure and ACE-related outcomes, we propose to consider a social-ecological model framework. The concept of the Social-Ecological Model was originally introduced in the 1970s by psychologist Urie Bronfenbrenner and designed to theoretically capture the multifaceted influence different personal, social, and environmental factors have on health behaviors and outcomes. Despite significant advancements in combination antiretroviral therapy (cART), ongoing inflammation in the brain and gut remain two of the most significant hurdles in the health of people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Additionally, a viral reservoir in each compartment inhibits cure efforts by allowing rapid viral rebound following cART interruption. The purpose of this study was to construct the explanatory models of postpartum depressive symptomatology (PPDS) from the perspective of rural Nebraska women and to compare these models with the medical model of PPDS. A sample of 20 rural Nebraska women were interviewed in a one-on-one qualitative descriptive telephone interview using questions based on Kleinman’s (1980) explanatory model of illness. This study used feminist pragmatism as a guiding philosophical paradigm.
