Previous research has established links between traumatic experiences and externalizing pathology including substance use and antisocial behavior, but little is known about potential mechanisms linking these phenomena. This study proposed a novel conceptual model linking these phenomena via the cognitive mechanism of negative world assumptions, or beliefs about the inherent dangerousness and unpredictability of life and others. Given previous mixed findings, this study also sought to explore potential interactions between gender and these phenomena. Purpose: The purpose of this practice inquiry project was to examine current screening practices for alcohol misuse within a primary care clinic. The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) guidelines state that alcohol misuse screening should be performed on adults aged 18 years or older using one of three standardized screening tools: Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), the abbreviated AUDIT-Consumption (AUDIT-C), or a single-question screening. If indicated, providers should provide a brief intervention and/or referral to treatment through the process known as SBIRT (screening, brief intervention, referral to treatment).

College students are a population with a high prevalence of risky consumption of alcohol and nursing students, specifically, are no exception. Yet few studies have been done on the use of alcohol in the student-nurse population. Since nursing education and practice are highly stressful, unhealthy coping strategies, such as risky alcohol consumption, are sadly common and seriously detrimental.

This paper explores the self-reported consumption of alcohol in undergraduate nursing students as related to peer, familial, and social influences.
