Data From: The Effects Of Vitamin D Supplementation On Hepatic Dysfunction, Vitamin D Status, And Glycemic Control In Children And Adolescents With Vitamin D Deficiency And Either Type 1 Or Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Benjamin U. Nwosu, Louise S. Maranda

Benjamin U. Nwosu

Background: The effects of vitamin D supplementation on mild hepatic dysfunction and glycemic control are unclear in children and adolescents with either type 1 (T1D) or type 2 diabetes (T2D). Hypothesis: Vitamin D supplementation will improve hepatic dysfunction and glycemic control. Aim: To determine the effect of vitamin D supplementation on alanine transaminase (ALT), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentration. Subjects and Methods: A retrospective study of 131 subjects with either T1D (n=88: 46 females, 42 males), or T2D ( n=43: 26 females, 17 males) of ages 3-18 years between 2007-2013. All subjects had (1) a diagnosis …

Fire is the rapid oxidation of a material in the exothermic chemical process of combustion, releasing heat, light and various reaction products. Fire is intriguing and therefore something that will attract a curious child from an early age. In 2010, the United States fire department responded to 44,900 fires started by someone, usually a child, playing with fire. These fires caused 90 civilian deaths, 890 civilian injuries and $210 million in direct property damage. Preschoolers and kindergartners are most likely to start these fires, while playing with matches or lighters and most likely to die in these fires. Most fire-play …

United States: Sexual Behavior In Association With Human Papilloma Virus Vaccination In Young Girls, Wafa R.R. Al Romaih, Said Shahtahmasebi, Hatim A. Omar

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

The first human Papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine was approved in the United States in 2006 with the potential to reduce cervical cancer and genital warts. Since then, its efficacy in preventing HPV-related cancers in both males and females has been promising. Despite CDC recommendations, opponents of the vaccine assert that vaccinating preadolescents and adolescents will increase their sexual activity, as well as overtly condone risky sexual behavior. We analyzed clinic data of 499 adolescents with a mean age of 16 years to explore whether vaccination led to change in sexual behavior after one year. Our results showed no statistically significant …

Providers’ Views On Transition Of Healthcare For Youth With Developmental Disabilities, Cordelia Y. Ross

Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects

Problem: Youth with DD have conditions that may limit their ability to function, with resulting social, emotional, or behavioral sequelae, and experience difficulty transitioning from child to adult health care. Also, adult providers may lack training and comfort level in working with patients with DD. For example, youth with ASD need an adult provider who understands autism but doesn’t see every health or behavior problem as a result of autism.

National Need: 1 in 6 children in the U.S. has a DD. Each year, almost half a million of these children transition into adulthood. As for ASD, 1 in 68 …
