Rapid Cooling Is A Safe Technique In Patients Undergoing Circulatory Arrest For Aortic Repair, Holly N Smith, Akiko Tanaka, Max Chehadi, Harleen K Sandhu, Charles C Miller, Hazim J Safi, Anthony L Estrera

Journal Articles

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate our institutional experience with rapid cooling for hypothermic circulatory arrest in proximal aortic repair.

METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed data from 2171 patients who underwent proximal aortic surgery requiring hypothermic circulatory arrest between 1991 and 2020. Cooling times were divided into quartiles and clinical outcome event rates were compared across quartiles using contingency table methods. Incremental effect of cooling time was assessed in the context of other perfusion time variables using multiple logistic regression analysis.

RESULTS: Median age was 61 years (interquartile range, 49-70 years) and 34.1% of patients were women. The procedure was emergent in 33.5% of …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Objective:

The role of the anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) as an indicator of physical and reproductive health in men is unclear. We assessed the relationships between AMH and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), testosterone, and metabolic parameters, in a cohort of expectant fathers.

Design:

ORIGINS Project prospective cohort study. Setting: Community-dwelling men.

Participants:

Partners of pregnant women attending antenatal appointments.

Main Outcome Measures:

Serum AMH, FSH, LH, testosterone, and metabolic parameters. Results: In 485 expectant fathers, median age 33 years, median AMH was 40 pmol/L (quartiles 29, 56). AMH was inversely correlated with FSH, age, and body mass index (BMI) …

Maternal Prenatal Cortisol Trajectories Predict Accelerated Growth In Infancy, Jennifer Hahn-Holbrook, Elysia Poggi Davis, Curt A. Sandman, Laura M. Glynn

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Higher maternal cortisol in pregnancy has been linked to childhood obesity. Much of the previous research has been limited in that cortisol in pregnancy is only measured at one time-point, precluding the ability to examine critical timing effects of prenatal maternal cortisol. To fill this gap, this longitudinal study measured maternal plasma cortisol at 15, 19, 25, and 31 weeks of pregnancy, and assessed infant body mass index percentile (BMIP)1 at birth, 3, 6, 12, and 24 months in 189 mother-infant pairs. Three distinct patterns of maternal cortisol in pregnancy (typical, steep, and flat trajectories) were identified using general growth …

Conference Presentation Abstracts

Introduction

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the leading causes of chronic liver diseases. NAFLD spectrum begins from simple steatosis to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), progressive fibrosis, cirrhosis, and even hepatocellular carcinoma. Although most NAFLD patients are overweight and obese, 30% are lean. We analyzed lean and non-lean NAFLD patients’ liver biopsies for cytokeratin 8/18 immunohistochemical staining differences.

Aims & Methods

Thirty biopsy-proven NAFLD patients (15 patients with BMI ≤ 25 kg/m2, 15 patients with BMI > 25 kg/m2) were included in the study. Demographic, biochemical, and histologic features of the patients were recorded. Biopsy specimens from our archive were …

Association Between Metabolic Overweight/Obesity Phenotypes And Readmission Risk In Patients With Lung Cancer: A Retrospective Cohort Study, Zinuo Yuan, Yiping Cheng, Junming Han, Dawei Wang, Hang Dong, Yingzhou Shi, Kyle L Poulsen, Xiude Fan, Jiajun Zhao

Journal Articles

BACKGROUND: Increased body mass index (BMI) and metabolic abnormalities are controversial prognostic factors of lung cancer. However, the relationship between metabolic overweight/obesity phenotypes and hospital readmission in patients with lung cancer is rarely reported.

METHODS: We established a retrospective cohort using the United States (US) Nationwide Readmissions Database (NRD). We included adult patients diagnosed with lung cancer from January 1, 2018 to November 30, 2018 and excluded patients combined with other cancers, pregnancy, died during hospitalization, low body weight, and those with missing data. The cohort was observed for hospital readmission until December 31, 2018. We defined and distinguished four …

Because the effects of age, menopausal status, weight and body mass index (BMI) on ovarian detectability by transvaginal ultrasound (TVS) have not been established, we determined their contributions to TVS visualization of the ovaries when one or both ovaries are visualized on the first ultrasound exam. A total of 29,877 women that had both ovaries visualized on their first exam were followed over 202,639 prospective TVS exams and 9703 women that had only one ovary visualized on their first exam were followed over 63,702 ultrasonography exams. All images were reviewed by a physician. While non-visualization of both ovaries increased with …

A total of 29,877 women that had both ovaries visualized on their first exam were followed over 202,639 prospective TVS exams. All images were reviewed by a physician. While visualization of both ovaries decreased with age, one or both ovaries could be visualized in two of every three women over 80 years of age. Around 93% of pre-menopausal women and ~69% of post-menopausal women had both …

Trends In Stunting, Underweight And Overweight Among Children Aged < 5 Years In Kuwait: Findings From Kuwait Nutritional Surveillance System (2007-2019), Nawal Alqaoud, Abdullah Al-Taiar

Community & Environmental Health Faculty Publications

Background: There is a paucity of data on the secular trends of stunting and overweight among children aged < 5 years in oil-rich countries in the Middle East.

Aims: To examine the secular trends of stunting, underweight and overweight in children aged < 5 years in Kuwait between 2007 and 2019.

Methods: We used large individual data records (n=48 108) from the Kuwait Nutritional Surveillance System (KNSS) to calculate height/length-for-age z score (HAZ), weight-for-age z score and body mass index (BMI)-for-age z score using World Health Organization growth references. Stunting and underweight were defined as less than -2 standard deviation (SD) and overweight (including obesity) as ≥ 2 SD. Trends of stunting, underweight and overweight were …
