Background: The association between psoriasis and metabolic syndrome is appealing as the two may share a similar cross-linking systemic inflammation process. The inflammation processes occurring in obesity and psoriasis may aggravate one another. This raised the question of whether a low-calorie diet would possibly reverse the aforementioned process. This study aims to determine whether calorie restriction reduces psoriasis area and severity index (PASI) in obese patients with moderate-to-severe psoriasis receiving conventional treatment compared to no calorie restriction.
Methods: We searched Pubmed/Pubmed Central, ScienceDirect, Cochrane library, EBSCOhost, and Scopus databases using keywords derived from our clinical question. The inclusion …

Journal of the Saudi Heart Association
Objective: Brucella prosthetic valve endocarditis is a rare but a life-threatening complication of brucellosis. It remains a diagnostic challenge. Optimal treatment of Brucella prosthetic valve endocarditis is debated. Available data is limited to case reports or small case series. The purpose of this study was to systematically review all published cases of Brucella prosthetic valve endocarditis in the literature. Method: A systematic review of PubMed database, Google, Google Scholar, and Scopus (From January 1974 to the present) for studies providing epidemiological, clinical and microbiological data as well as data on treatment and outcomes of Brucella prosthetic valve endocarditis was performed. …
Prehospital Antibiotics Improve Morbidity And Mortality Of Emergency Medical Service Patients With Sepsis, Thomas Martel, Monica N. Melmer, Samuel M. Leaman, Nicole Kassen, Seth Kozlowski, Jonathan Pangia, Scott Gutovitz, Dietrich Jehle
Prehospital Antibiotics Improve Morbidity And Mortality Of Emergency Medical Service Patients With Sepsis, Thomas Martel, Monica N. Melmer, Samuel M. Leaman, Nicole Kassen, Seth Kozlowski, Jonathan Pangia, Scott Gutovitz, Dietrich Jehle
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
Background: Severe sepsis is a major cause of mortality in patients evaluated in the Emergency Department (ED). Early initiation of antibiotic therapy and IV fluids in the ED is associated with improved outcomes. We investigated whether early administration of antibiotics in the prehospital setting improves outcomes in these patients with sepsis.
Methods: This is a retrospective study comparing outcomes of patients meeting sepsis criteria in the field by EMS, who were treated with IV fluids and antibiotics. Their outcomes were compared with controls where fluids were administered prehospital and antibiotics were initiated in the ED. We compared morbidity and mortality …

Special Considerations In Pediatric Burn Patients Regarding Drug Dosage And Administration, Kelsey Lindsley, Maureen Moynihan, Angela Chu, Kristen Yaeger, Karen L. Kier
Pharmacy and Wellness Review
Pediatric burn patients are a high-risk patient population to treat. These patients have altered physiologic function as a result of the burn injury, in addition to their smaller size and developing bodies. This creates unique challenges during treatment. Accommodations for these patients are made through unique drug dosages and routes of administration. When treating pediatric burn patients, properly assessing and treating pain promptly and effectively is of utmost importance. Nurses who utilize accurate and appropriate pain assessment scales will provide the best treatment of pain. Proper assessment allows the patient to receive the correct analgesic regime, ensuring a faster and …

Jurnal Penyakit Dalam Indonesia
Introduction. Community acquired pneumonia (CAP) now is known as the most common infection presented. Empiric antibiotic administered followed by observing parameters. This study aimed to know how far the American Thoracic Society/ Infectious Disease Society of America (ATS/IDSA) antibiotic guidelines 2007 based treatment influenced the length of stay (LOS) of CAP subject in a private hospital ward between January 2014-August 2015 Methods. A retrospective cohort was conducted with bivariate analysis and multivariate analysis for reducing the confounding factor. Sample taken with proportional sampling formula at ward in a hospital in Jakarta. Results. The result showed that subjects with unproper empiric …
Decreasing Time To Broad Spectrum Antibiotics For Septic Patients In The Emergency Department, Joseph J. Zieminski, Emily E. Bryant
Decreasing Time To Broad Spectrum Antibiotics For Septic Patients In The Emergency Department, Joseph J. Zieminski, Emily E. Bryant
Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
Background: Timely administration of broad spectrum antibiotics has been shown to be directly correlated with decreased mortality for patients with severe sepsis and septic shock. As such, both the Surviving Sepsis Campaign and the SEP-1 CMS measure recognize timely antibiotic administration as a cornerstone of therapy for patients with severe sepsis or septic shock.
Purpose: Decrease time to broad spectrum antibiotic administration for septic patients in the emergency department (ED) of Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center.
Methods: An alert within the electronic medical record was created to more rapidly identify potentially septic patients in the ED. After receiving the alert, …

Introduction: The cause of demise in GBS may be related to the sequelae of complications associated with the disease or its treatment. The primary objective of this study was to enumerate the prevalence of complications associated with treatment of patients with GBS at a tertiary care setup in Islamabad. The secondary objective was to determine the antibiotic susceptibility patterns of commonly encountered infections in GBS during hospital stay in our setup. Materials and methods: The study was carried out between Jan 2014 and June 2015 on one hundred patients of GBS aged ≥ 12 years. Baseline characteristics, complications and antibiotic …
