The Effects Of Covid-19 On Cognition In The Pediatric Population, Mia Ramirez, Hope Mccarroll, Lisa Griggs-Stapleton

Summer 2023 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium

Coronavirus disease or COVID-19, is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. COVID-19 can affect adults and children by causing long-term symptoms such as difficulty concentrating, anxiety, depression, long-term breathing problems, and even heart complications. Children represent about 19% of all reported COVID-19 cases since the pandemic first began. Children also can have trouble concentrating, which can impact their ability to attend school and do their daily activities that require concentration, such as dressing, showering, and social participation. Cognitive deficits due to COVID-19 can impact the pediatric population as they may have decreased occupational performance in desired occupations, such …

Pediatric Anxiety - A Guide For Parents, Paul Mccleary

Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects

As of April 2022, the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends that all children age 8-18 be screened for anxiety. Whether this recommendation is due to the many changes and stress stemming from Covid-19, the community was left with a need for insight into properly addressing this issue. Whether it be for parents at home or physicians in the clinic, clear educational pamphlets identifying alarm signs and home recommendations will benefit the community.

Promotion Of Skin Protection In Children In Waterbury, Vt, Kelsey M. Sullivan

Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects

Background: Vermont has among the highest rates of skin cancer in the nation. Between 2001 and 2005, Vermont had the highest incidence of melanoma of any state, 63% higher than the national average. It is also estimated that if children under 18 regularly used sunscreen of at least SPF 15, the incidence of squamous and basal cell carcinomas would decrease by 78%. Modeling by the EPA and CDC suggests that recommended sun protection measures could prevent 11,000 cases of skin cancer, 50 deaths, and $30 million in cancer treatment costs nationwide. Intervention: To create an information sheet on skin protection …

Pediatric Tooth Care And Fluoride Exposure In Maine, Lucas Grover

Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects

Maine is a large and rural state with limited access to fluoridated drinking water and consistent health and dental care. There is little information and guidance for parents regarding the importance of home pediatric dental care, early dentist visits, and home testing for fluoridated drinking water. Parents and primary care providers must engage in a dialog regarding proper tooth care to identify child specific risk factors that can lead to childhood caries and chronic tooth decay if not addressed early and aggressively.

Universal Pediatric Lipid Screening Guidelines are currently based on expert opinion only. Bright Futures/American Academy of Pediatrics currently recommends screening all patients ages 9-11 and again at ages 17-21. The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), however, concludes the evidence is insufficient to recommend for or against routine screening. This discordance leaves ambiguity for implementation in Family Medicine practices in Vermont. A survey of providers at Milton Family Practice showed that only 14% of providers at Milton Family Practice regularly perform lipid screening on their pediatric patients.
