Barbershop based hypertension screening and treatment interventions have been substantiated across prior literature as cost-effective and highly efficacious interventions for reducing overall blood pressure in the African American community. Researchers have also begun to explore the applicability of such an intervention to another high risk ethnic group for hypertension: Hispanic and Latino communities. With >30% of Danbury, CT's population being comprised of Hispanic and Latino populations and barbershop interventions for hypertension having already been established in the nearby city of New Haven, CT via Yale Health, this community engagement project aims to take the first step towards establishing similar services …

Older Vermonters face additional barriers to social engagement including living in a rural environment, lack of access to transportation, and financial barriers. The purpose of this study is to describe the design and impact of a rural community supported doula program. The Washington County Mental Health Doula Project is a unique collaboration between the Central Vermont Medical Center and Washington County Mental Health Services, whereby doula support services are offered for at risk patients during their pregnancy, through the birth process and the post partum period, and up to one year post delivery. An inherent distrust of the healthcare system is also common in the homeless community due to lack of access to care, transportation, insurance, et. This project is aimed at encouraging preventative care in the homeless community with respect to wound care to reduce their concerns about unaddressed complaints and also decrease the burden on the providers during their healthcare visits.

The primary care shortage is major problem that impacts people in rural and often low income communities. Our project seeks to address the primary care workforce shortage affecting the Vermont and Connecticut communities by better understanding current medical school student perspectives on primary care as a career of interest. Attractors and deterrents of primary care were highlighted through a survey distributed to all medical students at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont.

Many members of our geriatric community face challenges in attending appointments with their healthcare providers. The many barriers to healthcare that these patients face can range from financial to physical ones. Home health visits have become an invaluable resource for these patients. However, home healthcare is an expensive resource that many patients cannot afford. The Green House Project aims to empower elders and patients with barriers to healthcare, who thrive in the home health setting, by building communities where patients are treated with equality and mutual respect regardless of economic status.

It also increases the risk of psychiatric disorders later in life. Public schools often place a major focus on minimizing bullying through educational programs and punishments. Access to nutrition is an important social determinant of health with long term implications for our communities. Extensive medication lists are a problem everywhere throughout the United States. As a rural state that has a rapidly aging population, these lists will continue to grow and the added aspect of lack of access to services (whether via the internet or transportation) makes managing these medication lists harder for Maine’s population. The perspectives of patients at the CMMC Family Medicine Clinic were obtained through an anonymous survey, and two interviews with community members were conducted to identify specific issues.
