Chronic Volar Lunate Dislocation Resulting In Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: A Case Report, Travis D. Blood, Amanda J. Fantry, Nathan T. Morrell

Lunate dislocations are rare injuries caused by highenergy trauma disrupting the ligamentous restraints that connect the lunate to the carpus. We describe a case of missed volar lunate dislocation 10 years after the initial injury. The patient presented to our clinic with symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome after falling on an outstretched arm. He had increasing paresthesias in his median nerve territory and underwent a proximal row carpectomy with release of the transverse carpal ligament. At 2 years postoperatively, successful outcomes were noted with an 80° arc of motion of the carpus and complete resolution of carpal tunnel symptoms. Although …

Simultaneous Presence Of A Transligamentous Recurrent Motor Branch Of The Median Nerve And Palmaris Profundus Tendon In A Patient With Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: A Case Report, Dustin L. Larson, Moheb S. Moneim Jan 2016

Simultaneous Presence Of A Transligamentous Recurrent Motor Branch Of The Median Nerve And Palmaris Profundus Tendon In A Patient With Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: A Case Report, Dustin L. Larson, Moheb S. Moneim

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most frequently encountered entrapment of the peripheral nerves in the upper extremity. Abnormal anatomical variations involving the recurrent motor branch of the median nerve and presence of a palmaris profundus tendon have been reported. We present a 53-year-old man in whom open carpal tunnel release led to complete resolution of numbness, tingling, and pain in the right hand by 1 month postoperatively. Intraoperatively, the simultaneous presence of a transligamentous recurrent motor branch of the median nerve and palmaris profundus tendon in the carpal tunnel was found and excised. Surgeons should be aware of the …

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is often found in adults and may be associated with rare anatomical abnormalities in the hand, such as the presence of a palmaris profundus tendon. Although the muscle was originally thought to be a variant of the palmaris longus muscle, some case studies have described both structures during operative treatment with open carpal tunnel release. We present a case of a 51-year-old woman who underwent open carpal tunnel release to treat CTS of the right hand. Preoperatively, results of electrodiagnostic tests and clinical examinations, respectively, were normal and equivocal. Intraoperatively, a palmaris profundus tendon was found …
