Transcriptional Analysis Of Articularis Genu Sarcopenia In Osteoarthritis, Lauren Guillot, Mallory Crawford, Jose Cruz-Ayala, Cadence Gatterer, Vinod Dasa, Luis Marrero

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Knee osteoarthritis (kOA) causes atrophy and changes in myofiber distribution in regional musculature, including the Quadriceps femoris (QF) complex and the Articularis genu (AG), a mono-articular muscle that retracts the suprapatellar bursa during extension. The AG shares similar myofiber structure and innervation to the QF and can be easily sampled during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for kOA, allowing its potential use in developing a diagnostics platform for management of peri-articuar muscle health. The differential expression of myosin heavy chains (MHC) in type (T) T1 slow oxidative (MHC7), T2a fast glycolytic (MHC2), T2a/x hybrids (co- expression of MHC2 and MHC1), and …

Ankle Closure Methods: An Expert Survey Of Orthopedic Trauma Association (Ota) Members And Review Of The Literature, Jack Mckay, Christopher Bloise, Claudia Leonardi, Peter Krause

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Ankle fractures are very common, accounting for 10.2% of all bone injuries. Due to the lack of the subcutaneous support in the area, skin closure following ankle fracture surgery is particularly challenging. The purposes of this study were to evaluate the preferences of orthopedic trauma experts regarding skin closure methods after open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of rotational ankle fractures and to review current literature to compare outcomes of common skin closure methods. A 23-item web-based questionnaire was advertised to active members of the Orthopedic Trauma Association (OTA). Using a cross-sectional survey study design, we evaluated the preferences of …

Documentation Of Operative Vaginal Deliveries, Margaret Carey, Stacey Scheib

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

OBJECTIVE: We aim to identify if physicians are documenting operative vaginal deliveries according to Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine (SMFM) guidelines and to identify the frequency with which each criterion is being documented. BACKGROUND: An operative vaginal delivery is a delivery in which the provider uses forceps, a vacuum, or another device to aid in the extraction of the fetus from the vagina. In some cases, operative vaginal delivery can serve as an alternative to cesarean section when spontaneous vaginal delivery is not possible. Operative vaginal deliveries have a higher mortality than spontaneous vaginal deliveries1; operative vaginal deliveries also have …

Parenteral Corticosteroids After Fragility Fracture Increases The Odds Of A Repeat Fracture, Justin David, Marc R. Zucker, Timothy F. Carroll, Ross E. Straughan, Mishra Jaya, Jessie R. Gills, M Westerman

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Osteoporosis is a skeletal disorder characterized by porous and low-density bones. Patients with osteoporosis have an increased risk of fragility fractures and subsequent repeat fractures. Due to the high morbidity and mortality associated with fractures, medications that cause high risk of falls and decreased bone density should be used with caution to prevent repeat fractures. Some studies have shown that there is no change in fracture-associated medication use before and after a fracture. This study aims to explore the trends of systemic corticosteroid use, which causes a known physiologic decrease in bone density, before and after primary fracture and their …

Prophylactic Antibiotics Do Not Prevent Cns Infection In Civilian Gunshotwounds To The Head, Olivia E. Gilbert, Adam G. Podet, Ellery A. Hayden, John M. Wilson, Clifford Crutcher, Gabriel C. Tender

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Introduction: Civilian gunshot wounds to the head (GSWH) are an ongoing epidemic in the US, with incidence rising each year. They are frequently devastating, with case fatality rates approaching 91%, accounting for fatalities occurring in the hospital and at the scene of injury. Although military GSWH are robust, data and management guidelines for civilian GSWH is relatively lacking. Specifically, the administration of prophylactic antibiotics in GSWH patients remains controversial. Prior studies indicate the incidence of intracranial infection after civilian GSWH to be as high as 25%, with significant impact on morbidity and mortality. Objective: To assess the factors that increase …

Evaluation And Optimization Of Autologous Asymmetric Bilateral Breastreconstruction Techniques, Margaret Mena, Cayley Leblanc, Harel Schwartzberg, Patrick Palines, Mark Stalder

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Introduction: Breast reconstruction is an important part of breast cancer management and care. In autologous asymmetric bilateral breast reconstruction, the surgeon’s goal is to achieve a symmetric result despite working on two breasts with asymmetric needs. In addition, the surgeons often use different types of flaps, where a pedicle of the patient’s skin, fat, and blood supply is transferred to the breast. For example, the deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap is a common choice for surgeons and uses the blood supply from the deep inferior epigastric artery. This use of the patient’s own tissue allows for a more natural, …

Marijuana Use In Pregnancy And The Risk Of Preterm Birth, Benjamin Nelson, Rachel Gilbert, Andrew G. Chapple, Sarah Buzhardt, Elizabeth F. Sutton

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

INTRODUCTION: As more of the United States opts towards legalizing marijuana, the amount of marijuana users in general has increased – including women of reproductive age. Specifically, this trend has disproportionately affected socioeconomically disadvantaged women, with up to 15% of pregnant patients self-reporting marijuana use at some time during pregnancy. There have been several studies, both recent and older, that have linked pre-natal marijuana use with small for gestational age, increased perinatal infection rate, and preterm birth. The published literature does not come to a consensus on the effects of THC, the psychoactive substance in marijuana, on birthing outcomes and, …

Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis Of Perioperative Administration Of Acetazolamidefor Management Of Postoperative Pain After Laparoscopy, Gabrielle Stone, Kaitlin Mcgrail, Andrew G. Chapple, Elizabeth F. Sutton, Neill R. Chappell

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Laparoscopy (LSC) for abdominal surgery has become the standard approach for many surgical interventions to date. While there are numerous benefits to a minimally invasive technique, LSC can also be associated with postoperative referred pain to the shoulder. While several interventions have been proposed to mitigate this pain, no singular intervention has proven to be superior. Perioperative acetazolamide (ACTZ) administration is a relatively cost effective and safe option, though it is less well recognized and its efficacy is as yet unproven. This study was designed as a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy of perioperative ACTZ administration with …

Education Level Moderates The Effect Of Brain Atrophy On Cognition Inmultiple Sclerosis, Carrie Pham, Caitlyn Kelly, Jaeyeon Kweon, Jesus Lovera, Deidre Devier Oct 2021

Education Level Moderates The Effect Of Brain Atrophy On Cognition Inmultiple Sclerosis, Carrie Pham, Caitlyn Kelly, Jaeyeon Kweon, Jesus Lovera, Deidre Devier

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

The cognitive reserve theory refers to how clinical manifestations of brain pathology are affected by the brain’s ability to use preexisting cognitive processes to cope with and adapt to neurological insult or damage. Studies suggest that greater intellectual ability leading to greater educational attainment may attenuate the negative cognitive effects of brain atrophy by increasing cognitive reserve, protecting against cognitive impairment. Based on this theory, we were interested in seeing if the cognitive effects of brain atrophy, measured by the third ventricle width (TVW), would be attenuated in people with multiple sclerosis (MS) who had more than 12 years of …

Adolescent Reproductive Health Education During Covid-19: Evaluation Of A Model For Virtual Reproductive Health Intervention In New Orleans, Je Seay, Margaret Carey, R Dunn, Kelly Chau, R Mehdizadeh, S Greene, J Mecklosky, Ryan Pasternak

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Introduction: Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, school-based reproductive health interventions served as a key component of adolescent reproductive healthcare (Lindberg, 2020). Many students received limited reproductive health education prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, and even fewer are receiving reproductive health education now due to the constraints of virtual or hybrid learning environments (Lindberg, 2020). Comprehensive reproductive health education through a virtual instruction model could increase access to reproductive education for students in schools employing virtual or hybrid instruction due to COVID-19. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of a model for virtual reproductive health educational intervention …

Views Of Reproductive-Aged Female Cancer Patients On Oncofertility Care, Erin Boudoin, Akshay Goswami, Amelia Jernigan Oct 2021

Views Of Reproductive-Aged Female Cancer Patients On Oncofertility Care, Erin Boudoin, Akshay Goswami, Amelia Jernigan

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

In recent years, there have been many advancements in detection and treatment that have allowed individuals to survive cancer at much higher rates than we have seen in the past. These types of advancements have given patients the opportunity to prioritize issues such as financial burdens and overall quality of life when assessing their options for disease management. Aggressive treatment options have led to higher survival rates but the side effects of said treatments often render female patients infertile due to premature ovarian insufficiency (Northern Children’s Oncology Group, 2017). During the tense period of receiving a diagnosis and treatment/management plan, …

Analysis Of Maximal Intramedullary Nail Separation In Pediatric Femur Fractures, John Cooper, Michael Heffernan, Claudia Leonardi, Manaf Younis, William Arnold

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Background: Pediatric femur fractures are the most common orthopedic surgery requiring hospitalizations along with monitoring for 12-24 months after discharge. Flexible intramedullary (IM) nailing is a common technique for the treatment of pediatric femur fractures and has yielded shorter time to weight-bearing and return to activity when compared to spica casting and external fixation. The nails pass through the medulla in either a ‘C-’ or ‘S-’ shaped configuration and, as a byproduct, produce three points of fixation: the proximal nail crossing, the maximal point of separation, and the distal nail crossing. Recent literature suggests that the point of maximal nail …

Differential Expression Of Fibrogenic Biomarkers In Naïve Human Synoviocytes Cultured In Synovial Fluid From Knee Osteoarthritis Patients, Jose Cruz Ayala, Peter Issa, Stefan Sarkovich, Jennifer Simkin, Vinod Dasa, Luis Marrero

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

The synovium maintains normal joint function by secreting the fundamental components of synovial fluid (SF), but is also susceptible to inflammatory and fibrotic thickening during osteoarthritis (OA), contributing to disease symptomology. We recently published evidence that synovial fibrosis (SFb) presents heterogeneously in a large sample of patients with end-stage OA in association with deficits in range of motion (ROM). During OA, diseased chondrocytes and synoviocytes undergo a dynamic crosstalk that influences severity of cartilage degradation and synoviopathy. Therefore, we aim to test the responses of validated commercial human fibroblast- like synoviocytes (HFLS) after stimulation with SF from high or low …

Notch Dependency In Triple Negative Breast Cancer Mitochondrial Metabolism, Christine Edomwande, Deniz Ucar, Giulia Monticone, Samarpan Majumder, Lucio Miele, Fokhrul Hossain

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Introduction: Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) makes up 15 – 20% of breast cancers. It has the worst prognosis amongst the breast cancer carcinomas. TNBC lacks expression of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) and the endocrine receptors for estrogen and progesterone. Because it is negative for all three therapeutic targets, TNBC is difficult to treat. Chemotherapy is the standard for treatment of TNBC, however, about 80% of TNBC patients do not completely respond to chemotherapy. Resistance to therapy and the recurrence of breast cancer is thought to be caused by breast cancer stem cells. Notch signaling (canonical) is …

Primary Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma Of The Cecum, Lauren Gawey, Elizabeth Ellent, Agustin A. Garcia

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Introduction: The GI tract is the predominant site of secondary extra-nodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Primary lymphomas of the GI tract are rare, accounting for only 1-4% of malignancies arising in the stomach, small intestine, or colon. Primary colorectal lymphoma is even more uncommon, accounting for only 0.3% of large intestinal malignancies and 3% of GI lymphomas. Older adults (i.e. > 60) tend to have a worse prognosis than younger patients with DLBCL, most likely due to increased number of comorbid conditions, lower tolerance to treatment, and inadequate therapy regimens. The cardiotoxic effects of doxorubicin is a major treatment consideration in patients …

Joint Pain: Keeping All Differentials In Mind, Hira Hasan, Sara Javadi, Erin Hauck, Lauren Raney, Emily Klepper

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Introduction: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) results from the clonal proliferation of lymphoblasts. ALL is the most common pediatric cancer, accounting for one more than 25% of all pediatric malignancies. It primarily affects children between the ages of 1 and 5, with males being slightly more affected than females. A definitive diagnosis of ALL is made by the presence of ≥20% blasts on bone marrow biopsy. The prodromal stage of ALL may last from weeks to months and presents with nonspecific symptoms such as fever and fatigue. Infiltration of the bone marrow leads to decreased production of other cell lines, leading …

Comparison Of Regenerative Limb Salvage To Flap-Based Reconstruction Of Complexextremity Wounds: A Randomized Control Trial, Ryan D. Hoffman, Denise Danos, Ann Mckendrick, Frank Lau Oct 2021

Comparison Of Regenerative Limb Salvage To Flap-Based Reconstruction Of Complexextremity Wounds: A Randomized Control Trial, Ryan D. Hoffman, Denise Danos, Ann Mckendrick, Frank Lau

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Introduction Complex extremity wounds present unique challenges to the reconstructive surgeon. Flap- based limb salvage (fLS) is the standard of care for achieving durable coverage of exposed bone and tendon, but this approach is resource intensive. An alternative technique is regenerative limb salvage (rLS) using dehydrated human amnion/chorion membrane (dHCAM). We previously reported successful rLS case series in adults and children. The goal of this study was to compare rLS to fLS in a multi-centered, prospective, randomized controlled trial (RCT) with a crossover option upon reconstructive failure. Methods Between 2016 and 2018, 48 subjects with complex wounds of the extremities …

Introduction: Sarcopenia is linked to poor outcomes throughout the surgical literature and can be assessed on preoperative imaging to potentially aid in risk stratification. This study examined the effects of sarcopenia on surgical morbidity following lower extremity (LE) reconstruction, and also compared two methods of assessment, one of which is novel (“ellipse method”). Methods: A retrospective cohort study of fifty patients receiving free flap-based reconstruction of the LE was performed. Bilateral psoas density and area were quantified at L4 through tracing (“traditional method”) and encircling (“ellipse method”) to calculate Hounsfield Unit average calculation (HUAC). Logistic regression and ROC analysis for …

Survey Says: Shingrix Saves, Claire Holmes, Taylor Phelps, Maria Bernal Oct 2021

Survey Says: Shingrix Saves, Claire Holmes, Taylor Phelps, Maria Bernal

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Shingles (herpes zoster) results from reactivation of latent varicella zoster virus in spinal and cranial neurosensory ganglia. Nearly 1 in 3 people will develop shingles in their lifetime, with possible complications including hearing loss, vision loss, bacterial superinfection, and post- herpetic neuralgia. In 2006, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of the live attenuated Zostavax® vaccine for prevention of herpes zoster and post-herpetic neuralgia. Due to limitations in its use in immunocompromised individuals, a new non-live recombinant zoster vaccine (Shingrix®) became approved for use in 2017. In comparison to the Zostavax® vaccine, the Shingrix® vaccine has been …

Attenuating Collagen Deposition By Synoviocytes From Osteoarthritic Patientswith Synovial Fibrosis, Peter Issa, Stefan Sarkovich, Jose Cruz-Ayala, Vinod Dasa, Luis Marrero

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Fibrosis is the deposition of stiff extracellular matrix mostly composed of type-I collagen (COL1), which can impair function of diseased musculoskeletal components. COL1 is synthesized by myofibroblasts and mostly driven by the receptor-mediated transforming growth factor (TGF)β1- ALK5-Smad2/3 cascade. Stimulation of naïve fibroblasts with TGFβ1 induces proliferation, smooth muscle actin (SMA)+ myofibroblast differentiation, and COL1 synthesis. COL1 undergoes modifications to its triple helix, such as the conversion of lysine to hydroxylysine by Plod2-encoded lysyl hydroxylase (LH) 2b to facilitate cross-links that effectively strengthen COL1 fibrils. Synovial fibrosis (SFb) is a hallmark of osteoarthritis (OA) characterized by aberrant COL1 deposition in …

Utilizing Quantitative Covid-19 Serological Testing To Assess Pathophysiologicalimportance Of Complement Activation In Disease Severity, Shivani Jain, Harrison Travis, Meredyth Berard, Alexis Scheurermann, Alison A. Smith

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Background. COVID-19, the clinical syndrome caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), continues to cause high disease burden in the world. Not enough is known about immunological mechanisms driving COVID-19 disease severity in patients hospitalized in the ICU compared to those who test positive but do not develop severe disease. Extreme activation of the immune system has been linked to disease course complications in COVID-19. The complement system plays a key role in the innate immune response, and it has previously been suggested that it may be driving these disease complications. Immunoglobulin G (IgG) activates the classical complement …

The Effect Of Hernia Size On Length Of Stay And Outcomes In Roboticventral Hernia Repair, Yasmeen Kawji, Leslie Son, Karl Leblanc

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Hernia repairs are common procedures that have been performed laparoscopically for many years. However, the Federal Drug Administration approved the Intuitive Surgical robot for use in hernia repair surgeries in 2014. Since then, Our Lady of the Lake’s Surgery Department in Baton Rouge has primarily adopted robotic surgery for elective surgical operations. It has become the standard surgical approach for the institution over the laparoscopic approach, particularly for ventral hernia repair. Using robotic surgery, rather than laparoscopic surgery, allows for better ergonomics in terms of greater surgical dexterity, precision, vision, and ability to close hernia defects. However, one factor that …
