Background. Total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are commonly performed procedures, with over one million executed each year in the United States (U.S.) (Steiner et al., 2012). By 2030, THA and TKA are projected to become the most frequently performed elective surgical procedures in the U.S. (Cram et al., 2012; Kurtz et al., 2009).
