Due to COVID-19 restrictions, school-aged kids are not engaging in normal physical activities per usual, such as physical education class and team sports. This paper addresses the health concerns and community perspectives of decreased physical activity in pre teens and teens during this pandemic. Further, it provides recommendations to stay active for 60 minutes a day of moderate to vigorous exercise.

Due to recent staffing transitions, family medicine physicians at Newtown Primary Care in Danbury, CT are now managing the care of an increasing number of pediatric patients. The goal of this project was to develop a screening tool to allow practitioners to assess for developmental delays during well-child visits. The tool includes 10-question surveys for ages 1mo, 2mo, 4mo, 6mo, 12mo, 15mo, 2yo, 3yo, or 4yo with a scoring guide and a list of some concerning signs at each stage.

Trans and Gender Nonconforming children and adolescents make up an increasing percentage of today's youth. Many of their families, parents, and healthcare providers lack information on how to address the topic. Additionally, the lack of research in the field, and the ever changing definitions, can make it difficult to navigate and, as a result, there are several persistent myths and misconceptions. This project seeks to address these myths, the terminology as currently used, and local community resources from a patient and family perspective, specifically targeted at rural Vermont.

Background: Vermont has among the highest rates of skin cancer in the nation. Between 2001 and 2005, Vermont had the highest incidence of melanoma of any state, 63% higher than the national average. It is also estimated that if children under 18 regularly used sunscreen of at least SPF 15, the incidence of squamous and basal cell carcinomas would decrease by 78%. Modeling by the EPA and CDC suggests that recommended sun protection measures could prevent 11,000 cases of skin cancer, 50 deaths, and $30 million in cancer treatment costs nationwide. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 6,300 children between the ages of 5 and 18 were treated in emergency rooms for backpack injuries in 2016. Swanton Elementary School services over 500 children and frequently cites back pain as a reason for nurse visits, but does not provide any education on proper backpack safety. September 20, 2017 was National School Backpack Awareness Day which provided a unique opportunity to educate school parents and children about backpack safety.

An evaluation of screen time and media use in children. This project looks to education healthcare practitioners about the effects of current media practices in the United States on children. A presentation was given to healthcare practitioners at a family medicine practice and a brochure was created to distribute to families in the waiting room. Practitioners reported an increase in knowledge regarding the subject of screen time in children, an increase in their comfort level in in discussing these effects with patients, and increase in their ability to effectively communicate the media guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
