Method: The quality improvement project assessed TBI survivors' and FCs' coping and resiliency before and after an educational module on coping, resiliency, and self-care strategies. Intervention: A quality improvement project in a support group of …

Massive Blood Transfusion Practises: A Survey Of Level 1 Trauma Centers, Rebecca C. Parker Jan 2022

Massive Blood Transfusion Practises: A Survey Of Level 1 Trauma Centers, Rebecca C. Parker

DNP Research Projects

Abstract

Background: Traumatic injury is the leading cause of death for individuals under the age of 45 years old, regardless of race, origin, or sex (CDC, 2019). Among patients who sustain traumatic injury, hemorrhage remains the leading cause of death (American College of Surgeons [ACS], 2014). Hemodynamic stability may be achieved through administration of blood products such as packed red blood cells (PRBC), plasma, and platelets (PTL). Patients with severe exsanguination may require administration of blood products in large quantities, also known as a massive blood transfusion (MBT).

Local Problem: Nationally, traumatic injury accounts for over 150,000 deaths annually (American …

The Effects Of 465nm Blue Light On Sleepiness & Fatigue, Mark E. Childress Jan 2022

The Effects Of 465nm Blue Light On Sleepiness & Fatigue, Mark E. Childress

DNP Research Projects

Abstract

Background: Exhaustion is now accepted in nursing culture. Staff suffering from sleepiness and fatigue are more likely to commit medical errors and sentinel events. Emergency department nurses have the greatest risk of committing these errors. Currently, there is no relief provided to shift workers beyond a single 30-minute meal break within a 12-hour period. Other researched mitigation strategies have either failed or are unrealistic in this environment.

Local Problem: Emergency Department nurses at Parkridge Medical Center in Chattanooga, TN suffer from chronic sleepiness and fatigue that is exacerbated by shift duration, excessive workload, a stressful environment, and lack of …

Enhancing Hospitalists' Knowledge In Relation To Palliative Care, Herline Raphael Jan 2022

Enhancing Hospitalists' Knowledge In Relation To Palliative Care, Herline Raphael

DNP Research Projects

Abstract

Palliative care was not the specialty of many hospitalists; thus, communication was hindered regarding ELC and advanced directives. Despite healthcare utilization in the United States, inadequate treatment of serious illnesses continues due to the lack of provider education and understanding of ELC (palliative and hospice care). Hospitalists are not formally or informally trained to care for patients that need palliative or hospice care. A quantitative, quasi- experimental and qualitative approach was utilized to determine if hospitalists who received educational training on palliative care communication and collaboration improved knowledge, skills, and collaboration when caring for end-of-life or critically ill patients. …

Improving Nutrition Literacy In Primary Care, Kami D. Dykes Jan 2022

Improving Nutrition Literacy In Primary Care, Kami D. Dykes

DNP Research Projects

Abstract

By the year 2030, nearly one in every two adults will have obesity (Body Mass Index [BMI] ≥30 kg/m2.), and one in four adults will have severe obesity (BMI ≥35 kg/m2) (Ward et al., 2019). Equally troubling is that obesity poses a threat to the health of individuals, decreases the quality of life, shortens life expectancy, causes and worsens comorbidities, and increases all- cause mortality (Abdelaal et al., 2017). Studies have shown a link between BMI, nutritional knowledge, and dietary practices. Nutrition literacy is a newer term that refers to the complex relationship between nutrition …

Impact Of Care Handoff Methods On Emergency Department Throughput Times, Shelby Graves Jan 2022

Impact Of Care Handoff Methods On Emergency Department Throughput Times, Shelby Graves

DNP Research Projects

Abstract

Background: Emergency department (ED) overcrowding leads to detrimental results including increased morbidity and mortality, delay in evaluation of treatment, increased cost of care, increased length of stay, diminished staff satisfaction, increased ambulance diversion, and reputation damage for the entire institution (American College of Emergency Physicians, 2019). A study performed at three high volume community hospitals revealed inefficiency of nursing handover as one of the many contributors to prolonged ED length of stay (Salehi, 2019).

Local Problem: According to the 2018 Emergency Department Benchmarking Alliance (EDBA) data survey the average length of time from patient arrival to admission disposition was …

Atrial Fibrillation In Covid-19: A Descriptive Study Of Incidence, Mortality And Related Factors, Diana L. Taylor

DNP Research Projects

Abstract

This scholarly project determined the relationship of atrial fibrillation (AF) occurrences in COVID-19, as it is the most frequent arrhythmia in the U.S. and is driven by inflammatory pathology. In COVID-19 positive patients with AF occurrences understanding the relationship between these conditions could help identify patients with poor prognosis, higher morality, and other factors earlier in the hospital course.

This single-center scholarly project was a retrospective descriptive chart review to determine the relationship between AF and COVID-19 over a 6-month timeline in Chattanooga, TN. Of the 565 hospitalized COVID-19 positive patients included, 82 (14.5%) had AF occurrences. A higher …

Methods: A retrospective cohort design was used to …

Development Of A Surgical Instrument Prototype To Perform A More Precise Capsulorhexis, Kirk Haugen Jan 2014

Development Of A Surgical Instrument Prototype To Perform A More Precise Capsulorhexis, Kirk Haugen

Interdisciplinary Program Research

Performing capsulorhexis is often considered the most difficult part of cataract surgery. Not only is it difficult to perform, but doing it correctly is important for refractive outcomes (Okada, Hersh, Paul, & Straaten, 2013). Poorly done capsulorhexes are associated with problems including posterior capsulor opacification, capsulor fibrosis, and capsulor phimosis (Raviv, The perect capsulorhexis: more critical than ever, 2010). This study investigates whether or not a proposed surgical instrument will produce more precise capsulorhexes as measured by the circularity index. 60 capsulorhexes were performed on cigarette paper laid over clay. Half were done using the continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis method, while …
