Association Between Obesity And Hormone Receptor Characteristics Of Primary Breast Cancer At Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital, Jakarta, In 2017, Hardian Gunardi, Diani Kartini
The New Ropanasuri Journal of Surgery
Introduction. Obesity is an independent risk factor and prognostic factor of primary breast cancer. Abundant adipose tissue would lead to increment of blood estrogen level; thus, promoting proliferation of cancer cell, especially those with positive estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR). No study reported the association between obesity and hormone receptor characteristics of primary breast cancer in Indonesia.
Method. We collected cases of primary breast cancer which is diagnosed and undergone immunohistochemistry examination at Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital in 2017. The subjects divided into obese group and non-obese group. The ER and PR characteristics of both groups were compared …

Background: In recent decades, the prevalence of obesity in children has increased dramatically. This worldwide epidemic has important consequences, including psychiatric, psychological and psychosocial disorders in childhood and increased risk of developing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) later in life. Treatment of obesity is difficult and children with excess weight are likely to become adults with obesity. These trends have led member states of the World Health Organization (WHO) to endorse a target of no increase in obesity in childhood by 2025.
Main body: Estimates of overweight in children aged under 5 years are available jointly from the United Nations Children's Fund …

Contributing Factors To Diabetic Brain Injury And Cognitive Decline, Nirmal Verma, Florin Despa
Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications
The link of diabetes with co-occurring disorders in the brain involves complex and multifactorial pathways. Genetically engineered rodents that express familial Alzheimer's disease-associated mutant forms of amyloid precursor protein and presenilin 1 (PSEN1) genes provided invaluable insights into the mechanisms and consequences of amyloid deposition in the brain. Adding diabetes factors (obesity, insulin impairment) to these animal models to predict success in translation to clinic have proven useful at some extent only. Here, we focus on contributing factors to diabetic brain injury with the aim of identifying appropriate animal models that can be used to mechanistically dissect the …

A Quality Improvement Project To Determine The Incidence And Prevalence Of Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Best Practice Anesthesia Guidelines, And The Incidence Of Perioperative Cardiac And Respiratory Complications After The Implementation Of The Stop-Bang Questionnaire, Bradly Diamond, Gregory Guerrier, Cody Holliman, Robert Marrero, Tyler Nelson
Doctoral Projects
Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are at risk for perioperative respiratory and cardiovascular compromise (Opperer et al., 2016). Unfortunately, almost 90% of patients with moderate-to-severe OSA are not diagnosed and unaware of their disorder; however, they remain at increased perioperative risks (Singh et al., 2015). The STOP-BANG questionnaire was developed to meet the need for a reliable, concise, and efficient screening tool for OSA risk. The facility at which this project was conducted did not utilize a prescreening OSA risk tool. The facility not using a prescreening OSA risk tool is especially important because the State of Mississippi currently …

Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research
Decreased physical activity in obese individuals is associated with a prevalence of cardiovascular and metabolic disorders. Physicians usually recommend that obese individuals change their lifestyle, specifically changes in diet, exercise, and other physical activities for obesity management. Therefore, understanding physical activity and sleep behavior is an essential aspect of obesity management. With innovations in mobile and electronic health care technologies, wearable inertial sensors have been used extensively over the past decade for monitoring human activities. Despite significant progress with the wearable inertial sensing technology, there is a knowledge gap among researchers regarding how to analyze longitudinal multi-day inertial sensor data …

Obesity Suppresses Pigment Epithelium-Derived Factor And Alters Pro-Tumorigenic Signaling Pathways In Prostate Cancer, Nizar Ahmed Khamjan
Theses and Dissertations
Background: Pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF), a multifunctional protein, is a potent tumor suppressor and anti-angiogenic factor. PEDF has been identified as a novel regulator of lipid metabolism via binding and activating adipose triglyceride lipase, which stimulates lipolytic pathways. PEDF-deficient mice develop prostatic hyperplasia that progresses to cancer when these mice are fed a high fat diet (HFD). PEDF expression is decreased in prostate cancer (PCa) patient tissues. Conversely, PEDF treatment inhibits PCa growth in mouse models. Recently, our lab has demonstrated that excess oleic acid (OA) treatment, an in vitro obesity model, suppresses secreted PEDF expression in PCa cell lines …

Pre-training muscle characteristics of subjects who are obese determine how well exercise training will improve their insulin responsiveness. J Strength Cond Res 31(3): 798–808, 2017—Only half of prediabetic subjects who are obese who underwent exercise training without weight loss increased their insulin responsiveness. We hypothesized that those who improved their insulin responsiveness might have pretraining characteristics favoring a positive response to exercise training. Thirty nondiabetic subjects who were obese volunteered for 8 weeks of either strength training or endurance training. During training, subjects increased their caloric intake to prevent weight loss. Insulin responsiveness by euglycemic clamps and muscle fiber composition, …

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the USA. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a clinically aggressive subtype of breast cancer with high rates of metastasis, tumor recurrence, and resistance to therapeutics. Obesity, defined by a high body mass index (BMI), is an established risk factor for breast cancer. Women with a high BMI have increased incidence and mortality of breast cancer; however, the mechanisms(s) by which obesity promotes tumor progression are not well understood. METHODS: In this study, obesity-altered adipose stem cells (obASCs) were used to evaluate obesity-mediated effects of TNBC. Both in vitro …

Body-mass index (BMI) has increased steadily in most countries in parallel with a rise in the proportion of the population who live in cities1,2. This has led to a widely reported view that urbanization is one of the most important drivers of the global rise in obesity3,4,5,6. Here we use 2,009 population-based studies, with measurements of height and weight in more than 112 million adults, to report national, regional and global trends in mean BMI segregated by place of residence (a rural or urban area) from 1985 to …

The Correlation Between Obesity, Food Addiction, Anxiety & Depression, Ayham Khrais, Adarsh K. Gupta D.O.
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Obesity is a multifaceted disease with physiological, psychological and social influences. While physiological factors, such as basal metabolic rate, can influence an individual’s BMI (Body Mass Index), obesity is primarily determined by behavior: excess food intake and a sedentary lifestyle greatly contribute to weight gain. An individual’s behavior is influenced by many factors, including their desires, perceptions, and social pressures. Therefore, psychological conditions can greatly impact an individual’s eating habits, thereby affecting that person’s BMI. This endeavor involved exploration of the potential effects of food addiction, anxiety, and depression on obesity. A survey consisting of an amalgamation of the Yale …

Correlation Of Chronic Conditions And Pain Scale With Varying Levels Of Obesity In The Geriatric Population, Shabbir Hossain, Adarsh Gupta D.O.
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
The overall objective of this study was to establish whether obesity’s contribution to pain is stronger than vice versa – the medical debilities in elderly patients that contribute to obesity. In the process, this study will allow us to achieve whether different age samples with similar BMIs demonstrate the same level of medical complexities in geriatric patients. In summary, the purpose of this research study was to correlate a relationship between obesity and aging. We hypothesized that obesity will contribute to greater pain in the aging population, and that patients – regardless of their age groups in the aging population …

Introduction: Clinical variation by health insurance status in mixed sex bariatric surgery populations is reported, but such variation among moderately obese women is unknown.
Objective: to identify pre-operative variation by health insurance in female surgical patients.
Conclusions: Pre-operative characteristics of moderately obese women vary by insurance. Medicare’s highest risk for cardiopulmonary problems and diabetes, and Medicaid’s highest asthma, abdominal-hepatobiliary, and psychological/behavioral complications should be considered in managing moderately obese women subscribing to these carriers.

Multiple reports of uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) expression have established its presence in human epicardial adipose tissue (eAT). Its functional relevance to eAT, however, remains largely unknown. In a recent study, we reported that adrenergic stimulation of eAT was associated with downregulation of secreted proteins involved in oxidative stress-related and immune-related pathways. Here, we explored the UCP1-associated features of human eAT using next-generation deep sequencing. Paired biopsies of eAT, mediastinal adipose tissue (mAT), and subcutaneous adipose tissue (sAT) obtained from cardiac surgery patients, with specific criteria of high and low expression of UCP1 in eAT, were subjected to RNA sequencing. …

Regulation of lipid absorption by enterocytes can influence metabolic status in humans and contribute to obesity and related complications. The intracellular steps of chylomicron biogenesis and transport from the Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) to the Golgi complex have been described, but the mechanisms for post-Golgi transport and secretion of chylomicrons have not been identified. Using a newly generated Dennd5b−/− mouse, we demonstrate an essential role for this gene in Golgi to plasma membrane transport of chylomicron secretory vesicles. In mice, loss of Dennd5b results in resistance to western diet induced obesity, changes in plasma lipids, and reduced aortic atherosclerosis. In …

Data are limited on whether to adjust high-dose chemotherapy before autologous hematopoietic cell transplant (autoHCT) in obese patients. This study explores the effects of dose adjustment on the outcomes of obese patients, defined as body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m2. Dose adjustment was defined as a reduction in standard dosing ≥20%, based on ideal, reported dosing and actual weights. We included 2 groups of US patients who had received autoHCT between 2008 and 2014. Specifically, we included patients with multiple myeloma (MM, n = 1696) treated with high-dose melphalan and patients with Hodgkin or non-Hodgkin lymphomas (n = 781) …
