Background/aim: The present study aimed to define the clinical and laboratory criteria for predicting patients that will not benefit from invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) treatment and determine the prediction of mortality and prognosis of these critical ill patients. Materials and methods: The study was designed as an observational, multicenter, prospective, and cross-sectional clinical study. It was conducted by 75 researchers at 41 centers in intensive care units (ICUs) located in various geographical areas of Turkey. It included a total of 1463 ICU patients who were receiving invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) treatment. A total of 158 parameters were examined via logistic …

Tracheal Intubation With The Mcgrath Mac X-Blade Videolaryngoscope In Morbidly Obese And Nonobese Patients, Zehra İpek Arslan, Hadi̇ Ufuk Yörükoğlu Jan 2019

Tracheal Intubation With The Mcgrath Mac X-Blade Videolaryngoscope In Morbidly Obese And Nonobese Patients, Zehra İpek Arslan, Hadi̇ Ufuk Yörükoğlu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Increased body mass index (BMI) and neck circumference are the two independent predictors of difficult intubation. McGrath MAC X-Blade is a videolaryngoscope specifically designed for difficult intubations. Materials and methods: Eighty patients with the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status I?III undergoing elective surgery requiring endotracheal intubation were enrolled in the study. Patients were divided into two groups, nonobese (BMI < 30) and morbidly obese (BMI > 35). All patients were intubated with the McGrath MAC X-Blade in both groups. View optimization and tube insertion maneuvers such as reinsertion of the device, slight removal of the device, cricoid pressure, handling force, 90° anticlockwise rotation of …

Radiographic Comparison Of Cervical Spine Motion Using Lma Fastrach, Lma Ctrach, And The Macintosh Laryngoscope, Gözde İnan, Nurdan Bedi̇rli̇, Zerri̇n Özköse Şatirlar

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The optimal technique for airway management in patients with cervical pathology remains unclear. Intubating laryngeal mask airway devices such as LMA CTrach and LMA Fastrach have not been compared for cervical spine (C-spine) movements in the context of cervical pathology. The present study aimed to determine upper C-spine movements by radiography during intubation with different devices as well as comparing the duration and success of intubation in cervical surgery.Materials and methods: Sixty patients scheduled for elective cervical surgery were registered in this prospective, randomized study. Patients with cervical trauma/injury, previous neck surgery, and body mass index (BMI) of >35 …
