Spinal Cord Trauma: An Overview Of Normal Structure And Function, Primary And Secondary Mechanisms Of Injury, And Emerging Treatment Modalities, Daniel Morin

Senior Honors Theses

The structures of the spinal cord and vertebral column are designed to provide flexibility, while still providing ample protection for the spinal cord deep within. While it does offer remarkable protection against most routine trauma, the spinal cord is still vulnerable to high-force etiologies of trauma and may become damaged as a result. These events are referred to as primary injury. Following the initial injury, the body’s own physiological responses cause a cascade of deleterious effects, known as secondary injury. Secondary injury is a major therapeutic target in mitigating the effects of spinal cord injury (SCI), and much research is …

Background/aim: The aim of this study was to determine the level of presence of scapula fractures (SFs) in cases of blunt thoracic trauma and to identify other injuries accompanying SF. Materials and methods: Blunt thoracic trauma cases with SF determined on direct radiography or computerized tomography (CT) were categorized as Group 1. Group 2 was constituted by selecting cases with high injury severity score (ISS) with no SF. The demographic characteristics and all injuries of the patients were evaluated. Results: SF was determined in 77 (11.3%) patients (Group 1), and Group 2 consisted of 607 patients. The ISS was significantly …

Background/aim: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of salbutamol inhaler treatment in an experimentally induced model of pulmonary contusion. Materials and methods: Thirty-two male Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into four groups: the control group (CG), sham group (SG), treatment group 1 (TG1), and treatment group 2 (TG2). Experimental contusion was established by targeting the right lung tissue. After 72 h, histopathological evaluation for the severity of edema, hemorrhage, and leukocyte infiltration was performed in both sides of the lungs. Results: Examination of right lung tissues revealed a significant difference in edema, hemorrhage, leukocyte infiltration, and total lung …
