Seroprevalence Of Antibodies Against Kaposi's Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus Among Hiv-Negative People In China, Tiejun Zhang, Zhenqiu Liu, Jun Wang, Veenu Minhas, Charles Wood, Gary M. Clifford, Na He, Silvia Franceschi

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Background: Little information on the prevalence of Kaposi’s sarcoma associated herpesvirus (KSHV) among HIV-negative individuals is available from Asia.

Methods: In the present study, we report findings from a new survey of KSHV in 983 HIV-negative male migrants from Shanghai and their combination with previous similar surveys of 600 female migrants, 600 female sex-workers (FSW), 1336 sexually transmitted infection (STI) clinic male patients, 439 intravenous drug-users (IVDU), and 226 men having sex with men (MSM) from China. KSHV-specific antibodies against latent and lytic antigens were assessed using Sf9 and BC3 monoclonal immunofluorescence assay. Age-adjusted prevalence ratios (PR) and 95% confidence …

Nutritional Approaches To Achieve Weight Loss In Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease., Christine C Hsu, Erik Ness, Kris V Kowdley

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) can range in spectrum from simple hepatic steatosis to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which is characterized by lipotoxicity, hepatocellular ballooning, and inflammation and can progress to cirrhosis. Weight loss is the cornerstone treatment for NAFLD and NASH. Various randomized controlled trials have shown that weight loss of ≥5-10% leads to significant improvements in hepatic steatosis. Diets high in sodium and fructose have been implicated in the pathogenesis of NAFLD. Although some clinical studies suggest that an isocaloric high-fructose diet does not worsen NAFLD, these clinical studies are often short in duration. More recently, the Dietary Approaches …

Background/aim: Intracranial stenosis (ICS) is identified in 2.2%?70.4% of patients with ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of ICS in a single center registry from Turkey. Materials and methods: We reviewed the charts of 619 patients with acute ischemic stroke. ICS was defined as any ICS > 50% on cerebrovascular imaging. The demographic data, risk factors, NIHSS scores and C reactive protein level at admission, mortality in hospital, recurrent stroke, and mRS in the follow-up period were recorded. Results: A total of 72 (11.6%) patients with ICS (45 males (62.5%); mean age 68.3 ± …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) has a high prevalence in developing countries. We aimed to investigate the current prevalence of H. pylori, as well as its potential serum risk factors, in a population from southwest China.Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study included 10,912 subjects who received medical examinations at the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University in 2014. Data regarding physical examinations and biochemical measurements were collected, and H. pylori infection was diagnosed with a 13C-urea breath test. Logistic regression was conducted to identify the risk factors for H. pylori infection. Results: The infection rate of H. pylori was 34.4% …

Repeated Prevalence Studies Of Nosocomial Infections In One University Hospital In Serbia, Milena Ilic, Ljiljana Markovic-Denic

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Nosocomial infections occur worldwide and affect both developed and resource-poor countries. The aim of this paper was to determine the prevalence and risk factors for nosocomial infections in one Serbian hospital. Materials and methods: Three-point prevalence surveys were conducted in the Clinical Center of Kragujevac (1240 beds). The standard definitions for nosocomial infections of the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention were used. The authors conducted surveys according to the same protocol. Results: The prevalence of infected patients and the overall prevalence of nosocomial infections was 6.2% and 7.1% in 2003, 4.6% and 4.6% in 2005, and 7.6% and …
