Passive modeling of movements is often used in movement therapy to overcome disabilities caused by stroke or other disorders (e.g. Developmental Coordination Disorder or Cerebral Palsy). Either a therapist or, recently, a specially designed robot moves or guides the limb passively through the movement to be trained. In contrast, action theory has long suggested that effective skill acquisition requires movements to be actively generated. Is this true? In view of the former, we explicitly tested the latter. Previously, a method was developed that allows children with Developmental Coordination Disorder to produce effective movements actively, so as to improve manual performance …

Mexico City Metropolitan Area children chronically exposed to high concentrations of air pollutants exhibit an early brain imbalance in genes involved in oxidative stress, inflammation, innate and adaptive immune responses along with accumulation of misfolded proteins observed in the early stages of Alzheimer and Parkinson's diseases. A complex modulation of serum cytokines and chemokines influences children's brain structural and gray/white matter volumetric responses to air pollution. The search for biomarkers associating systemic and CNS inflammation to brain growth and cognitive deficits in the short term and neurodegeneration in the long-term is our principal aim. We explored and compared a profile …

To investigate the renal expression of apoptosis regulatory proteins b-cell lymphoma 2 (bcl-2) and bcl-2 associated X (bax) in children with Henoch–Schönlein nephritis (HSN) Materials and methods: Renal expression of antiapoptotic bcl-2 and proapoptotic bax proteins were studied immunohistochemically in 22 children with HSN. The kidneys of 5 children who died due to nonrenal reasons were used as the control. The patients were compared according to their renal histopathology and prognosis. Results: Nephrotic or nephrotic-nephritic renal involvement was the most common presentation. Histopathological findings were Class I in 1, Class II in 5, Class III in 10, Class IV in …

Hepatitis A can be prevented by vaccination. The aim of this study was to determine seropositivity for hepatitis A before vaccination in healthy children 12 and 24 months of age and compare seroconversion rates after vaccination between these 2 groups. Materials and methods: Forty-nine children aged 1 year (Group 1) and 51 children aged 2 years (Group 2) were included in the study. Inactive hepatitis A vaccine (Avaxim, 80 antigenic subtypes, 0.5 mL) were administered to every child in 2 doses, 6 months apart. Anti-hepatitis A virus (HAV) IgG and IgM antibodies were detected by Architect HAVAb-IgG and HAVAb-IgM (Abbott, …
