Shift Work And Vascular Events: Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis., Manav V Vyas, Amit X Garg, Arthur V Iansavichus, John Costella, Allan Donner, Lars E Laugsand, Imre Janszky, Marko Mrkobrada, Grace Parraga, Daniel G Hackam

Medical Biophysics Publications

OBJECTIVE: To synthesise the association of shift work with major vascular events as reported in the literature.

DATA SOURCES: Systematic searches of major bibliographic databases, contact with experts in the field, and review of reference lists of primary articles, review papers, and guidelines.

STUDY SELECTION: Observational studies that reported risk ratios for vascular morbidity, vascular mortality, or all cause mortality in relation to shift work were included; control groups could be non-shift ("day") workers or the general population.

DATA EXTRACTION: Study quality was assessed with the Downs and Black scale for observational studies. The three primary outcomes were myocardial infarction, …

Is Dabigatran Non-Inferior To Warfarin For The Prevention Of Stroke In Those With Atrial Fibrillation?, Brittany Burlakoff Jan 2012

Is Dabigatran Non-Inferior To Warfarin For The Prevention Of Stroke In Those With Atrial Fibrillation?, Brittany Burlakoff

PCOM Physician Assistant Studies Student Scholarship

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this systematic review is to determine whether or not dabigatran 150 mg twice daily is non-inferior to warfarin for the prevention of stroke in those with atrial fibrillation with similar rates of bleeding events.

STUDY DESIGN: Review of 3 English language primary studies. All three trials were randomized controlled trials which were blinded for those receiving dabigatran and un-blinded for those receiving warfarin.

DATA SOURCES: Articles were found using PUBMED and COCHRANE databases.

OUTCOME MEASURED: The primary outcomes of these studies were either incidence of stroke or systemic embolism and/or major bleeding events.

RESULTS:The RE-LY …

Prediction Of Mortality In Stroke Patients Using Multilayer Perceptron Neural Networks, Necdet Süt, Yahya Çeli̇k Jan 2012

Prediction Of Mortality In Stroke Patients Using Multilayer Perceptron Neural Networks, Necdet Süt, Yahya Çeli̇k

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

We aim ed to predict mortality in stroke patients by using multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural networks. Materials and methods: A data set consisting of 584 stroke patients was analyzed using MLP neural networks. The effect of prognostic factors (age, hospitalization time, sex, hypertension, atrial fibrillation, embolism, stroke type, infection, diabetes mellitus, and ischemic heart disease) on mortality in stroke were trained with 6 different MLP algorithms [quick propagation (QP), Levenberg-Marquardt (LM), backpropagation (BP), quasi-Newton (QN), delta bar delta (DBD), and conjugate gradient descent (CGD)]. The performances of the MLP neural network algorithms were compared using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) …

Limb Remote Ischemic Postconditioning Is Effective But Also Time-Course-Limited In Protecting The Brain From I/R Injury, Ce Xu, Chengju Yi, Haidong Guo, Qiangqiang Liu, Li Wang, Hongxia Li Jan 2012

Limb Remote Ischemic Postconditioning Is Effective But Also Time-Course-Limited In Protecting The Brain From I/R Injury, Ce Xu, Chengju Yi, Haidong Guo, Qiangqiang Liu, Li Wang, Hongxia Li

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

To determine the effect of limb remote ischemic postconditioning (LIPoC) against cerebral ischemia reperfusion in rats and the relationship between cycle number or remote postconditioning episode duration and the protective function of LIPoC. Materials and methods: Transient focal ischemia/reperfusion was induced by 90 min of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) with nylon monofilament and 22 h of reperfusion in male Sprague-Dawley rats. The animals underwent LIPoC consisting of 1, 2, or 3 cycles, with each occlusion or release lasting for 5 min (5/5), 10 min (10/10), or 15 min (15/15) of bilateral femoral artery occlusion/release. Neurological score, infarct volume, water …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The aim of this study was to investigate the predictors of warfarin use in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF). This study was the first to be conducted in a Turkish population. Materials and methods: Patients who presented to our outpatient clinic with the diagnosis of AF between September 2008 and October 2009 were enrolled. The patients were classified according to the CHADS2 risk scoring system recommended by the AHA/ACC/ESC guidelines for the classification of stroke risk in non-valvular AF patients. The probable variables influencing the use of warfarin were determined as age, sex, income level, healthcare coverage, lifestyle, place …
