Development And Validation Of Sunlight Exposure Measurement Questionnaire (Sem-Q) For Use In Adult Population Residing In Pakistan, Quratulain Humayun, Romaina Iqbal, Iqbal Azam, Aysha Habib Khan, Amna Rehana Siddiqui, Naila Baig Ansari

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Background: Vitamin D deficiency has been identified as a major public health problem worldwide. Sunlight is the main source of vitamin D and its measurement using dosimeters is expensive and difficult for use in population-based studies. Hence, the aim of this study was to develop and validate questionnaires to assess sunlight exposure in healthy individuals residing in Karachi, Pakistan.

Methods: Two questionnaires with seven important items for sunlight exposure assessment were developed. Fifty four healthy adults were enrolled based on their reported sunlight exposure (high = 17, moderate = 18, low = 19) from Aga Khan University, Karachi. Over four …

Over Prescription Of Antibiotics For Adult Pharyngitis Is Prevalent In Developing Countries But Can Be Reduced Using Mcisaac Modification Of Centor Scores: A Cross-Sectional Study., Amber Hanif Palla, Rafeeq Alam Khan, Anwar H. Gilani, Fawziah Marra Nov 2012

Gilani, Fawziah Marra

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Background

Although Group A beta hemolytic streptococcus (GABHS) can cause bacterial pharyngitis, the most common etiology is viral; despite this viral etiology, antibiotics are commonly prescribed for this infection in industrialized countries. We investigated the prevalence of GABHS in adult pharyngitis patients from lower socioeconomic settings in Karachi, Pakistan, how often antibiotics are prescribed for pharyngitis and if appropriate agents were used in a developing world setting. Finally, we wanted to see the usefulness of modified McIsaac scores in predicting positive cultures.

Methods

Adult patients were recruited from three local hospital outpatient dispensaries (OPDs). All patients aged 14–65 years who …

Clinical Utility Of Folate-Containing Oral Contraceptives., Zohra S Lassi, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta Apr 2012

Clinical Utility Of Folate-Containing Oral Contraceptives., Zohra S Lassi, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta

Woman and Child Health

Folate is a generic term for a water-soluble B-complex vitamin which plays an important role in protein synthesis and metabolism and other processes related to cell multiplication and tissue growth. Pregnant and lactating women are at increased risk of folic acid deficiency because generally their dietary folate is insufficient to meet their physiological requirements and the metabolic demands of the growing fetus. The evidence pertaining to the reduction of the risk of neural tube defects (NTDs) due to folate is so compelling that supplementation with 400 mug of folic acid to all women trying to conceive until 12 weeks of …

This study appraises the antioxidant and antimicrobial attributes of various solvent extracts (absolute methanol, aqueous methanol, absolute ethanol, aqueous ethanol, absolute acetone, aqueous acetone, and deionized water) from bark, leaves and seeds of Pongamia pinnata (L.) Pierre. Maximum extraction yield of antioxidant components from bark (16.31%), leaves (11.42%) and seeds (21.51%) of P. pinnata was obtained using aqueous methanol (20:80). Of the extracts tested, the bark extract, obtained with aqueous methanol, exhibited greater levels of total phenolics [6.94 g GAE/100 g dry weight (DW)], total flavonoids (3.44 g CE/100 g DW), inhibition of linoleic acid peroxidation (69.23%) and DPPH radical …

Evaluation Of Gut Modulatory And Bronchodilator Activities Of Amaranthus Spinosus Linn, Mueen Ahmad Chaudhary, Imran Imran, Samra Bashir, Hassan Mehmood, Najeeb-Ur Rehman, Anwarul-Hassan Gilani Jan 2012

Evaluation Of Gut Modulatory And Bronchodilator Activities Of Amaranthus Spinosus Linn, Mueen Ahmad Chaudhary, Imran Imran, Samra Bashir, Hassan Mehmood, Najeeb-Ur Rehman, Anwarul-Hassan Gilani

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Background: The aqueous-methanolic extract of Amaranthus spinosus (A. spinosus Linn.,) whole plant, was studied for its laxative, spasmolytic and bronchodilator activities to validate some of its medicinal uses.
Methods: The crude extract of A. spinosus was studied in-vivo for bronchodilator and laxative activities and in-vitro using isolated tissue preparations which were mounted in tissue baths assembly containing physiological salt solutions, maintained at 37°C and aerated with carbogen, to assess the spasmolytic effect and to find out the possible underlying mechanisms.
Results: In the in-vivo experiments in mice, the administration of A. spinosus increased fecal output at doses of 100 …

Ethnopharmacological Studies On Chrozophora Prostrata In Perspective Of Its Folkloric Reputation As Purgative, Usman Arshad, Khalid Hussain Janbaz, Samra Bashir, Najeeb-Ur- Rehman, Hassan Mehmood, Anwar-Ul-Hassan Gilani Jan 2012

Ethnopharmacological Studies On Chrozophora Prostrata In Perspective Of Its Folkloric Reputation As Purgative, Usman Arshad, Khalid Hussain Janbaz, Samra Bashir, Najeeb-Ur- Rehman, Hassan Mehmood, Anwar-Ul-Hassan Gilani

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

This study was undertaken to validate the medicinal use of Chrozophora prostrata in constipation. The crude extract of C prostrata produced laxative effect in mice at 100 and 300 mg/kg, similar to carbachol and castor oil. In spontaneously contracting rabbit jejunum tissues, C. prostrata (0.01-3 mg/mL) exhibited atropine-sensitive spasmogenic effect, which was reproducible in guinea-pig ileum. Interestingly, at high concentrations, C. prostrata showed concentration-dependent inhibitory effect on rabbit jejunum, suggesting the presence of accompanied spasmolytic activity. When tested on induced contractions, C. prostrata completely relaxed low K+-induced contraction, while partially inhibited high K+, similar to cromakalim. Tetraethylammonium pretreatment abolished the …

Cross-Talk Between Nfkb And The Pi3-Kinase/Akt Pathway Can Be Targeted In Primary Effusion Lymphoma (Pel) Cell Lines For Efficient Apoptosis, Azhar Hussain, Saeeda O. Ahmed, Maqbool Ahmed, Omar S. Khan, Sally Al Abdul Mohsen, Leonidas C. Platanias, Khawla S. Al-Kuraya, Shahab Uddin

Centre for Regenerative Medicine & Stem Cell Research

Background: A number of constitutively activated signaling pathways play critical roles in the survival and growth of primary effusion lymphoma cells (PELs) including NFkB and PI3/AKT kinase cascades. NFkBis constitutively activated in a number of malignancies, including multiple myeloma, Burkitt’s lymphoma and diffuse large cell B-cell lymphoma. However, its role in primary effusion lymphoma has not been fully explored.
Methodology/Principal Findings: We used pharmacological inhibition and gene silencing to define the role of NFkB in growth and survival of PEL cells. Inhibition of NFkB activity by Bay11-7085 resulted in decreased expression of p65 in the nuclear compartment as detected by …
