Electrostatic Charge Polarity Effect On Respiratory Deposition In The Glass Bead Tracheobronchial Airways Model, Mohammed Ali, Malay K. Mazumder, Rama N. Reddy, Mariofanna Milanova, Jing Zhang, Alexandru S. Biris

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The effects of unipolar and bipolar electrostatic charges on the deposition efficiency of therapeutic aerosols in the physical model of human tracheobronchial (TB) airways have been investigated. Respirable size aerosol particles were generated by a commonly prescribed and commercially available nebulizer and charged by a corona charger and then their size and charge distributions were characterized by an Electronic Single Particle Aerodynamic Relaxation Time analyzer to study the drug aerosol particles' deposition pattern. The experiments were performed with a glass bead tracheobronchial model (GBTBM) (physical model) which was designed and developed based upon widely used and adopted dichotomous lung morphometric …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background and Aim: Prenatal diagnosis of chromosome abnormalities is usually performed on amniotic fluid samples. Aneuploidy screening by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), although not an alternative for conventional cytogenetics, has become a useful tool. Materials and Methods: We compared the results of FISH and conventional cytogenetic analysis applied on 51 amniotic fluid samples between January 2002 and December 2005, in our Cytogenetics Laboratory. Amniocytes were extracted using 5 cc of the sample, and direct FISH was applied using an AneuVysion Assay Kit (Vysis). The remaining fluid samples were used for chromosome analysis by conventional methods after long-term cell cultures. …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background: Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) infection is of global importance and many studies are aimed to develop more sensitive diagnostic tools and improve therapeutic options. HBV infection is diagnosed and followed-up basically by serological studies, among which the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is widely used. Aim: To develop a sensitive HBsAg ELISA for both research and diagnostic purposes. Materials and Methods: A hybridoma (clone 4D1) secreting anti-HBs IgG2a monoclonal antibody (mAb) was used for the establishment of our in-house ELISA. Tests were performed for both cell culture medium and human sera. The hepatoma cell lines of human origin PLC/PRF/5 and …

A Torsioned And Autoamputated Ovarian Cyst Simulating A Duplication Cyst: A Case Report, Sema Uğuralp, Bi̇rsen Harma, Ahmet Siğirci, Neşe Karadağ

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The commonest and most serious complication of neonatal ovarian cysts is torsion. Ovarian torsion leads to loss of the ovary. We report a case of a torsioned and autoamputated right ovarian cyst presenting as a duplication cyst of the intestine in a newborn. An abdominal cystic mass 4.8 x 3.4 cm in diameter was diagnosed in a 36-week-gestation fetus using antenatal ultrasonography (US). The physical examination revealed a mobile abdominal mass in the right upper quadrant. Postnatal US confirmed a cystic mass in the right upper quadrant. Intraoperatively, the ovarian cyst was autoamputated and it was adhered to the antimesenteric …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The 3-dimensional alignment of the carpal bones should be intact to ensure functional integrity of the hand. The treatment of fractures of the carpal bones is challenging and may differ according to localization. A patient with closed carpal injury and his treatment are presented in this report. After his wrist was crushed between a smooth hammer and a workbench during an occupational accident, the patient had multiple carpal bone fractures and remarkable swelling. The type of the injury was regarded to be a sort of capitate-hamate diastasis, although it did not correspond to any type that had been previously described. …

Cobalamin Deficiency During Pregnancy Expressed As Elevated Urine Methylmalonic Acid Levels Determined By A Photometric Assay, Osman Meti̇n İpçi̇oğlu, Mustafa Gültepe, Ömer Özcan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Aim: Deficiency of cobalamin and folate during pregnancy is associated with megaloblastic anemia. Lower levels of folate and vitamin B12 were reported in mothers whose offspring had neural tube defects compared to unaffected controls. Increased methylmalonic acid (MMA) levels are a sensitive indicator of mild vitamin B12 deficiency and elevated homocysteine levels denote vitamin B12 or folate deficiency. We aimed to evaluate cobalamin state in pregnancy by using urine MMA levels determined by an economic spectrophotometric method. Materials and Methods: For this cross-sectional study, plasma total homocysteine (tHcy), serum folate and vitamin B12, and urine MMA levels were measured in …

A Rare Side Effect Of Metformin: Metformin-Induced Hepatotoxicity, Ersi̇n Aksay, Sedat Yanturali, Başak Bayram, Ni̇l Hocaoğlu, Selahatti̇n Kiyan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Metformin is an oral hypoglycemic agent that is commonly used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. While metformin-associated metabolic acidosis is a widely recognized side effect of this drug, metformin-induced hepatotoxicity has been rarely reported in the literature. We present herein the case of a 52-year-old male in whom metformin-associated lactic acidosis and metformin-induced hepatotoxicity developed.

Giant Hydronephrosis Mimicking An Intraabdominal Mass, Turgut Yapanoğlu, Fati̇h Alper, İsa Özbey, Yilmaz Aksoy, Azam Demi̇rel

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Giant hydronephrosis (GH) is a rare entity that may mimic progressive and benign abdominal cystic tumors. Despite the increase in the use of prenatal ultrasound, GH may still be seen in the adult population. We report a case of GH in a 19-year-old female who presented with a progressive abdominal distention and other gastrointestinal symptoms. Diagnostic and therapeutic features of this rare case are discussed in light of the current literature.

Intussusception Due To Inflammatory Fibroid Polyp Located At Ileum: Report Of Two Cases, Özgür Korkmaz, Hati̇ce Gülşen Yilmaz, Fahri̇ Yilmaz

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Inflammatory fibroid polyps are uncommon gastrointestinal tract lesions. The stomach and ileum are the most commonly affected sites. Clinical symptoms depend on the location and size of the lesion. Obstruction or intussusception is the most frequent initial symptom when an inflammatory fibroid polyp is located in the small intestine. We describe two cases of inflammatory fibroid polyps of the small intestine causing ileocecal and ileoileal intussusception.

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Schwannoma of the cervical sympathetic chain is a rare nerve tumor. These lesions typically present as an asymptomatic neck mass and are easily mistaken for a carotid body tumor during the initial work-up. In this report, a rarely seen huge cervical sympathetic chain schwannoma case, who experienced partial Horner´s syndrome postoperatively, is presented. We report a case of schwannoma on the cervical sympathetic chain, which to our knowledge is the largest reported in the current literature.

Aim: In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of in-and-out urethral catheterization on serum total and free prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels and free/total PSA ratio. Materials and Methods: This is a prospective study including 24 patients who admitted with lower urinary tract symptoms and underwent in-and-out urethral catheterization with 18 F Foley catheter inserted for postvoiding residual urine measurement. Blood samples were withdrawn to determine serum total and free PSA levels and free/total PSA ratio immediately before, and at 1, 24 and 72 hours after urethral catheterization. Results: There was no alteration in total and free PSA …
