Effect Of Charge On The Deposition Of Electrostatically Charged Inhalable Aerosol In Lung Model, Divey Saini, C. U. Yurteri, N. Grable, Robert A. Sims, Malay K. Mazumder

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Inhalable drugs are widely used for treating lung diseases such as asthma, emphysema, and cystic fibrosis. The aerosol particles in these inhalable drugs may be charged electrostatically. The deposition of these inhaled therapeutic aerosol particles in the different regions of the lung depends on the particle aerodynamic diameter, electrostatic charge distribution, particulate number density, breathing rate, aerodynamics of the lung, ambient temperature, and relative humidity (RH). The primary mechanisms for lung deposition of inhaled particles are impaction, gravitational settling, diffusion, interception, and electrostatic attraction. To simulate lung deposition, electrostatically charged aerosol particles are introduced through a throat section into a …

Synthesis And Chemistry Of Naphthalene Annulated Trienyl Iron Complexes: Potential Anticancer Dna Alkylation Reagents, Traci Means

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Iron complex chemistry that opens a new door to the medicinal and pharmaceutical worlds is the aim of this research. Specifically, ortho-quinone methide moieties are intermediates in several antitumor drugs and have been identified as bioreductive alkylators of DNA. In our research, a class of iron compounds has been targeted to resemble these quinone methides. It is hoped that these new compounds could be modified to provide a window of opportunity toward the discovery of a selective mode of drug delivery. We have focused our efforts on generating a reactive transition metal complexed 5-membered ring analog of o-quinone methide based …

Comparison Of Antibiotic Resistance Patterns Of Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli In Outpatient And Inpatient Populations From 1990 To 1996 In Bemidji, Mn, Gail R. Conway, Patrick Guilfoile

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

A retrospective study of antibiotic susceptibility was conducted on data from all uropathogenic Escherichia coli submitted to the MeritCare Clinic-Bemidji, MN and the North Country Regional Hospital-Bemidji, MN during 1990, 1993, and 1996. The proportion of antibiotic resistant strains was generally equal or higher in E. coli isolates from community-acquired infections than with E. coli isolates from nosocomial infections. Comparison with antibiotic prescriptions during 1990, 1993, and 1996 provided no clear relation between antibiotics prescribed for outpatient urinary tract infections and the proportion of E. coli strains resistant to those antibiotics. This suggests that factors other than selection for resistance …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are a powerful immunochemical tool. Today, the availability of mAbs with desired specificity enables ligand separation based upon the immunoaffinity technique. By using the high selectivity of mAbs, immunoaffinity purification offers the possibility of isolating compounds even from complex samples with a selectivity which cannot be achieved by other methods. This paper reports the preparation and identification of monoclonal antibodies against human interleukin-2 (IL-2) and the establishment of an immunoaffinity method for purifying human IL-2 (hIL-2). Hybridomas were generated by the fusion of NSO or FO myelomas and spleen cells from immunized mice. Hypoxanthine-aminopterin-thymidine-resistant hybridomas secreting antibodies …

Cholesterol Has An Inflammatory Influence In The Effects Of Fats On Metabolism In Endotoxemic Rats, Hali̇t Tanju Besler, Robert Francis Grimble Jan 2002

Cholesterol Has An Inflammatory Influence In The Effects Of Fats On Metabolism In Endotoxemic Rats, Hali̇t Tanju Besler, Robert Francis Grimble

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

We showed that butter suppresses metabolic responses to endotoxin in Wistar rats. Responses included increases in plasma caeruloplasmin and liver zinc and protein concentrations, and decreases in plasma zinc and albumin concentration. However, butter lost its suppressive effect at dietary concentrations above 90g/kg diet. The present study examined whether this phenomenon was due to the total dietary cholesterol intake rather than the intrinsic fatty acid composition of butter. Rats received diets, for four weeks, containing either 100g/kg corn oil, 90 g/kg butter, 190g/kg butter, or 90 g/kg butter supplemented with cholesterol to render the latter two diets identical in cholesterol …

Discrimination Between The Acidic And Molecular Effects Of Lactate On Muscle Tension Development, Şeref Erdoğan, Sanli Sadi̇ Kurdak, Ni̇lay Ergen, Ayşe Doğan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Fatigue can be defined as the decrease in the genesis of maximal muscle tension, and it may develop when metabolic end-products cannot be readily washed out. During anaerobic exercises, lactate accumulates in the muscle and blood, resulting in acidic pH in these tissues. Fatigue during lactate accumulation is generally attributed to its acidifying property; however, the inverse effect of lactate on muscle tension also at isopH values may be due to the molecular as well as the acidifying effects of this metabolite. In this study, we aimed to distinguish the molecular and acidifying effects of high lactate, both of which …
