Early Term Effects Of Robotic Assisted Gait Training On Ambulation And Functional Capacity In Patients With Spinal Cord Injury, Mustafa Azi̇z Yildirim, Kadri̇ye Öneş, Gökşen Gökşenoğlu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The aim of the study was to determine the effects of robotic-assisted gait training on ambulation and functional capacity in patients with spinal cord injury.Materials and methods: In total, 88 patients were included and were randomly divided into two groups. The first group underwent 16 sessions of robotic therapy training for 8 weeks and conventional therapy for 5 days a week. The second group underwent conventional treatment. The Walking Index for Spinal Cord Injury II was used to evaluate functional ambulation, and the functional independence measure score was used to assess patients' functional independence levels in a blind manner. Results: …

Development And Psychometric Testing Of The Family Functioning Questionnaire In Rehabilitation (Ffqr), Hati̇ce Abaoğlu, Esra Aki

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The present study aimed to develop a reliable and valid assessment tool for measuring family functioning in rehabilitation. Materials and methods: Semistructured interviews were performed with 100 rehabilitation professionals working in pediatrics to identify the feature to be measured. The items determined with the qualitative analysis of the data were presented to 14 experts and content validity was provided. The questionnaire created based on the judgments of the experts was administered to 440 parents of children with special needs. Results: After validity and reliability analysis, the final version of the questionnaire comprised 48 items with four factors identified as …

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Mirror Therapy And Phantom Exercises On Phantom Limb Pain, Bahar Külünkoğlu, Fati̇h Erbahçeci̇, Afra Alkan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Although mirror therapy (MT) and phantom exercises (PE) have been shown to reduce pain, the efficacy of these methods in terms of pain, quality of life (QoL), and psychological status (PS) has not been investigated and compared to date. The aim of this study was to determine whether there is any difference between MT and PE in the treatment of phantom limb pain (PLP).Materials and methods: Forty unilateral transtibial amputees (aged 18-45 years) participated in this study. The subjects were randomly divided into `MT group' and `PE group'. QoL was assessed using Short-Form 36 (SF-36), psychological status using the Beck …

Background/aim: Clinicians associate the changes in cervical lordosis with neck pain, but there is no clear consensus on this. We aimed to investigate the relationships of cervical angles, neck pain, disability, and the psychological status of the patients with acute and chronic neck pain. Materials and methods: A total of 110 patients with neck pain were included in this study. Demographic and clinical characteristics of the patients were recorded. The lordosis angle was determined by the posterior tangent method. A visual analog scale (VAS), the Neck Disability Index (NDI), and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression (HAD) scale were administered to …

Intermittent Pneumatic Compression Pump In Upper Extremity Impairments Of Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema, Hülya Uzkeser, Sali̇ha Karatay Jan 2013

Intermittent Pneumatic Compression Pump In Upper Extremity Impairments Of Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema, Hülya Uzkeser, Sali̇ha Karatay

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

To investigate the effect of intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) pumps on upper extremity impairments in breast cancer-related lymphedema. Materials and methods: Twenty-five patients with lymphedema were randomized into 2 groups. For 3 weeks, the pneumatic compression group (n = 12) underwent a treatment program including skin care, compression bandage, exercise therapy, manual lymph drainage (MLD), and IPC. The control group (n = 13) participated in the same program, but without IPC. The range of motion (ROM) of the upper extremities was measured with goniometry, and dysfunction of the shoulder was assessed with the Constant-Murley scale. Results: Significant improvements were observed …

Clinical And Electrophysiological Evaluation Of Shoulder Functions In Spinal Accessory Nerve-Preserving Neck Dissection, Özgür Tarkan, Ülkü Tuncer, Hacer Bozdemi̇r, Tunay Sarpel, Süleyman Özdemi̇r, Özgür Sürmeli̇oğlu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The aim of this study was to evaluate shoulder functions after neck dissection with preservation of the spinal accessory nerve by objective physical examination, electromyographic findings, and subjective patient complaints, and also to investigate the effect of the type of neck dissection. Materials and methods: The present study included 29 patients on whom unilateral selective or modified radical neck dissection was performed for head and neck cancer and/or metastasis to the neck. Electromyographical findings, range of motion, and pain scores of the shoulder joint were determined for the operated and nonoperated (control) sides. Results: An electromyographic examination of the trapezius …
