Background/aim: The prevalence of Helicobacter pylori is reported to be roughly 80% in Turkey, and only very few culture-based studies are available on antibacterial resistance in adult dyspeptic patients. This study was carried out in adult dyspeptic patients with an aim to: (i) detect H. pylori by invasive tests (culture, polymerase chain reaction, and histopathology) and (ii) determine the current resistance rates of H. pylori isolates to six antibiotics, including rifampicin. Materials and methods: This study was conducted in 422 adult dyspeptic patients. The presence of H. pylori was demonstrated by culture, polymerase chain reaction, and the histopathology of gastric …

The Role Of Outer Inflammatory Protein A (Oipa) In Vaccination Of Thec57bl/6 Mouse Model Infected By Helicobacter Pylori, Mohaddese Mahboubi, Tahereh Falsafi, Majid Sadeghizadeh, Fatemeh Mahjoub Jan 2017

The Role Of Outer Inflammatory Protein A (Oipa) In Vaccination Of Thec57bl/6 Mouse Model Infected By Helicobacter Pylori, Mohaddese Mahboubi, Tahereh Falsafi, Majid Sadeghizadeh, Fatemeh Mahjoub

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Outer inflammatory protein A (OipA) is an important adhesin of Helicobacter pylori. Our goal was to assess the role of OipA in protection of C57BL/6 mice against H. pylori. Materials and methods: C57BL/6 mice were mucosally immunized with recombinant OipA protein, OipA + propolis, propolis, and phosphate-buffered saline. After vaccination, anti-OipA IgA was measured. Mice were challenged three times with 5 x 107 CFU of the H. pylori B19 strain. Two weeks later, bacterial colonization and inflammation in the stomach was analyzed using standard methods. Results: The CFU number in the OipA group was significantly (P < 0.05) lower than that of the control. The CFU number in the OipA + propolis group was higher than those of the OipA and propolis groups. IgA titers were significantly higher (P < 0.0001) in the OipA group compared to the control and OipA + propolis groups. Propolis did not play an adjuvant effect but it interfered with the efficient vaccine effect of OipA. Conclusion: Results show the effect of vaccination by OipA in protection of the mouse model and the importance of OipA in H. pylori pathogenesis. OipA may be proposed as a suitable oral vaccine candidate against H. pylori infection; however, further study is required to determine adjuvant or adverse effects of propolis toward OipA.

More than 50% of Iranian children are infected with Helicobacter pylori; however, no data exist about the association of vacA/cagA genotype/status with disease outcomes in them. We analyzed association of vacA/cagA genotypes/status of children's isolates with gastric inflammation status as the first step in H. pylori pathogenesis. Materials and methods: Antral biopsies for culture and histopathology were taken from 328 children in 1997-2009. vacA (s, m) alleles and cagA statuses of the isolates were determined by PCR. Histopathology was performed according to the Sydney system; gastritis was scored as normal, mild, moderate, severe, and follicular. Results: A total of 159 …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Helicobacter pylori is an important human pathogen associated with gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma, and adenocarcinoma. Radioiodine (RAI) treatment plays an important role in the management of differentiated thyroid cancer and primary hyperthyroidism. It is known that during RAI treatment, a considerable amount is absorbed by the stomach as well. In this study we aimed to reveal any therapeutic impact of RAI on H. pylori infections. Materials and methods: Eighty-seven patients who were hospitalized for RAI treatment were consecutively included in this study. Of those, 76 patients had differentiated thyroid cancer and 11 had primary hyperthyroidism. …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Besides some genetic explanations of the native course of ulcerative colitis (UC), the most attributable factors are pathogenic bacterial agents. There are some conflicting data about the relationship between Helicobacter pylori and the rate of UC in the literature. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the rate of H. pylori in UC patients. Materials and methods: Forty-nine individuals diagnosed with UC who had undergone upper gastrointestinal tract endoscopy for different reasons were included in the study. The presence of H. pylori in the stomach was checked by histopathological examination. Results: H. pylori positivity was present in 57.1% of patients with UC. …

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a major factor in inflammatory and malignant diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. The epidemiologic pattern of this infection varies among developed and developing countries, and is related to the general standards of living in each region. In view of the importance of this infection and its different prevalence in different regions of Iran, as well as its long-term complications, this study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of H. pylori infection and its contributing factors in Zahedan. Materials and methods: Ninety-seven healthcare workers without digestive symptoms or a history of H. pylori eradication were randomly …

Aim: Data on antral nodularity in adults are sparse. Although the association of nodular gastritis with Helicobacter pylori infection is well known, its potential as a premalignant lesion and its association with other gastroduodenal diseases are questionable. Materials and methods: The medical records of the patients between 2003 and 2006 were retrospectively reviewed to analyze their demographics, clinical characteristics, and endoscopic and pathological features. Results: Of 9949 adult patients who underwent endoscopy, 185 (1.86%) were diagnosed with nodular gastritis, 167 (90%) of whom had dyspepsia. The presence of Helicobacter pylori was demonstrated in 65.4% (121/185). There were 16 cases (8.7%) …
