Serum Visfatin Concentrations Are Positively Associated With Ventricular Arrhythmias: A Single-Center Preliminary Study, Rongrong Shen, Peiyu Zhang, Rong Guo, Yawei Xu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Visfatin has been reported to be closely related to cardiovascular diseases associated with inflammation, but the correlation between visfatin and ventricular arrhythmia (VA) has not been discussed yet. The study aims to explore the association between serum visfatin concentrations and VA in patients. Materials and methods: Sixty-seven hospitalized patients diagnosed with VA and 131 control subjects were enrolled in this crosssectional study between May 20, 2017 and November 8, 2019. Classification of VA types was based on the presence of structural heart disease (SHD). The patients? blood samples were collected to examine their serum levels of visfatin. Results were …

Background/aim: New treatment regimens for COVID-19, which has threatened the world recently, continue to be investigated. Although some of the treatments are promising, it is thought to be early to state that there is definitive treatment. Experiences and treatment protocol studies from treatment centers are still important. The aim of this study is to evaluate factors affecting the treatment process of the first cases followed in our clinic. Materials and methods: The consecutive hospitalized patients with COVID-19 pneumonia were analyzed in this retrospective and cross-sectional study. Data were recorded from the electronic and written files of patients. Results: Eighty-three patients …

Aim: To explore the potential of the circulating plasma miRNA-21 as an early detection biomarker by comparing early-stage breast cancer (BG) and healthy control (HG) in Indonesian population. Materials and methods: The enlisted patients were 26 adult female early-stage breast cancer patients (stage 1A, 1B, 2A, and 2B) of Airlangga University Hospital from August 2019 to October 2019. Sixteen volunteers were recruited as matching healthy subjects. MiRNA-21 expression was quantified by plasma qRT-PCR. Data analysis performed using IBM SPSS Statistics v.24 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). MiRNA-21 cut-off, sensitivity, and specificity were analyzed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Results: …

Ischemic Modified Albumin As A New Biomarker In Predicting Oxidative Stress In Alopecia Areata, Hati̇ce Ataş, Müzeyyen Gönül, Yasi̇n Öztürk, Mustafa Kavutçu Jan 2019

Ischemic Modified Albumin As A New Biomarker In Predicting Oxidative Stress In Alopecia Areata, Hati̇ce Ataş, Müzeyyen Gönül, Yasi̇n Öztürk, Mustafa Kavutçu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Results show that oxidative stress is a pathophysiologic factor for alopecia areata (AA); however, the markers used can be confounding. Thus, we aimed to investigate the role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of AA through an evaluation of ischemia-modified albumin (IMA); other markers of the oxidant/antioxidant system, such as SOD, CAT, GSH-ST, and MDA; and contributing clinical risk factors. Materials and methods: The usefulness of IMA as a new marker for oxidative stress was compared with that of other markers and evaluated in patients with AA.Results: The mean serum level of IMA was of higher statistical significance in AA …

Biomarker And Shear Stress In Secondary Pediatric Pulmonary Hypertension, Ayhan Pektaş, Fatma Rana Olguntürk, Serdar Kula, Erman Çi̇lsal, Ayşe Deni̇z Oğuz, Fatma Sedef Tunaoğlu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Endothelial dysfunction, tissue damage, inflammation, and microthrombosis are involved in the pathogenesis of pulmonary hypertension (PH), which may be present as a complication of congenital heart diseases. This study aims to identify how indicators of endothelial dysfunction (shear stress), tissue damage (brain natriuretic peptide and troponin T), inflammation (C-reactive protein (CRP)), and microthrombosis (D-dimer and von Willebrand factor) are altered in children with congenital left-to-right shunting. Materials and methods: This is a review of 25 children who developed PH due to congenital left-to-right shunting, 40 children who underwent corrective surgery for congenital left-to-right shunting, and 40 healthy children. Results: Serum …
