Different Roles Of Endothelial Cell-Derived Fibronectin And Plasma Fibronectin In Endothelial Dysfunction, Xiaoxin Luo, Weixiong Jian

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

MDABackground/ aim: Atherosclerosis is significantly influenced by endothelial cell activation and dysfunction. Studies have demonstrated the substantial presence of fibronectin (Fn) within atherosclerotic plaques, promoting endothelial inflammation and activation. However, cellular Fn (cFn) secreted by various cell types, including endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells, and plasma Fn (pFn) produced by hepatocytes. They are distinct forms of Fn that differ in both structure and function. The specific contribution of different types of Fn in promoting endothelial cell activation and dysfunction remain uncertain. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the respective roles of pFn and endothelial cell-derived Fn (FnEC) in promoting …

Plasma Ldl Subtype Distribution In Patients With Or Without Coronary Stenosis, Yeşi̇m Er Öztaş, Çağdaş Özdöl, Levent Karaca

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Plasma low density lipoprotein (LDL) had 3 subtypes according to its separation by polyacrylamide gradient gel electrophoresis. Of these, the small, dense (Sd) LDL particles have been accepted as an emerging cardiovascular risk factor. This study was conducted to assess the LDL subtypes in a group of patients undergoing coronary angiography. Materials and methods: The study involved 56 patients—36 of whom had at least 1 vessel stenosed (stenosis group)—and 20 patients who had no stenosis (non-stenosis group). LDL subtypes were determined according to their migration pattern after non-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis. Total cholesterol, LDL and high density lipoprotein (HDL), and …

An Investigation Of Changes In Ocular Blood Flow In Rabbits With Long-Term Hyperhomocysteinemia Using Color Doppler Ultrasonography, Fi̇gen Nari̇n, Abdulhaki̇m Coşkun, Nazmi̇ Nari̇n, Ali̇ Baykan, Sertaç Hanedan Onan, Abdulkeri̇m Coşkun, Muammer Hakan Poyrazoğlu, Ruşen Erez

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Hyperhomocysteinemia was induced in rabbits using methionine. Ocular blood flow changes were examined by color Doppler ultrasonography (CDU). Materials and methods: Fifty New Zealand rabbits were divided into 5 groups. Groups 1-4 received one of the following chemicals: methionine only, methionine plus vitamin B6, methionine plus vitamin B12, or methionine plus folic acid. Controls received no chemicals. Serum homocysteine levels were measured on treatment days 1 and 60. Orbital vessels were examined by CDU on day 60. Results: In the 4 study groups, homocysteine levels were significantly elevated on day 60 compared to the levels on day 1 (P < 0.05). Elevations of homocysteine levels in group 1 were greater than those of groups 2 and 4 on day 60 (P < 0.05). When results of ocular blood flow changes were compared, no statistically significant difference was found based on flow velocities in the ophthalmic artery. Measurements from the ciliary artery revealed a statistically significant decrease in flow velocity in the study groups (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Using CDU, we found that flow velocities in the ciliary artery were decreased. This condition is attributed to atherosclerotic and thromboembolic alterations of the ocular vessels due to hyperhomocysteinemia.

Evaluation Of The Performance Of A Carotid Subclavian By-Pass As A Source For Internal Thoracic Artery, İbrahi̇m Duvan, Alper Gürbüz, Meti̇n Demi̇rci̇n

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The concomitance of atherosclerotic subclavian occlusive lesion with coronary artery disease has an extraordinary importance in coronary artery bypass surgery. The development of a lesion in the subclavian artery proximal to the internal thoracic artery (ITA) before or after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) by ITA can result with the coronary-subclavian steal syndrome and myocardial ischemia may occur. It is pretty vital to be aware of the presence of the subclavian occlusive lesion in patients undergoing CABG. We present in this paper an atherosclerotic case that had a concomitant brachiocephalic and coronary artery disease. He had both carotid and subclavian …

Homocysteine Levels And Other Risk Factors In Coronary Heart Disease, Gi̇ray Bozkaya, Aydan Çavuşoğlu, Si̇bel Bi̇lgi̇li̇, Baysal Karaca, Ercüment Cengi̇z, Oktay Bi̇lgi̇r

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Many risk factors for coronary heart disease (CHD) have been reported to date. Recently, it has been shown that elevations in homocysteine (Hcy) levels may contribute to the development of coronary heart diseases. In this study, our aim was to determine the relation of Hcy levels and other risk factors in CHD. Serum Hcy, lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)], C-reactive protein (CRP), fibrinogen, cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL and LDL levels were measured in 51 male patients, diagnosed with CHD with negative T elevations in electrocardiograms, and in 20 healthy males. Hcy was determined in serum samples with Fluorescence Polarization Immunoassay (FPIA) on Abbott IMx. …

The Effects Of Insulin On Serum Levels Of Apo A-I Containing Lipoprotein Particles In Syndrome X Patients With Coronary Heart Disease, Meti̇n Yildirimkaya, Cumhur Kilinç, Mustafa Özkan, Kurtuluş Yilmaz, Yavuz Nari̇n

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Syndrome X consists of low serum high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), raised serum triglyceride, glucose intolerance, increased blood pressure, abdominal obesity and insulin resistance which is associated with increased risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). Apolipoprotein (apo) A-I containing lipoprotein particles, lipoprotein A-I (Lp A-I) and lipoprotein A-I:A-II (Lp A-I:A-II.) may have different metabolic functions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between insulin and apo A-I containing lipoproteins in syndrome X patients with or without CHD. We selected 38 male patients with syndrome X and divided into two groups: The one with CHD (n=21) and the other …
