To evaluate the efficacy of the biphasic and triphasic dynamic multidedector computerized tomography (MDCT) in the preoperative prediction of histological subtypes of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Materials and methods: The preoperative dynamic MDCT findings of 51 patients with renal mass who had undergone nephrectomy were reviewed retrospectively. Twenty-five of the patients had biphasic (portal and excretory) and 26 had triphasic (arterial, portal, and excretory) MDCT images. Tumor size, presence of calcification, tumor-aorta attenuation values in all phases and homogeneicity of the tumor were noted for every patient. In heterogeneous tumors, the minimum and maximum attenuation values were noted to determine …

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a common condition in healthy people, causing morbidity and mortality worldwide despite latest advances in therapy and immunization procedures. Causative agents cannot be detected in approximately 50% of CAP episodes and therapy is initiated empirically. We aimed to determine the spectrum and frequency of the causative agents in patients with CAP in a university hospital. Materials and methods: Seventy seven adult patients hospitalized with CAP from November 2007 to March 2008 were included. CAP was diagnosed with clinical, radiological, and laboratory signs. Results: Sputum and blood cultures grew Streptococcus pneumoniae in 15 specimens; Haemophilus influenzae in …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is a nosocomial pathogen of increasing importance. Empiric antibiotic therapy for S. maltophilia infection is difficult because the microorganism is resistant to a number of agents typically used for health care associated infections, thus potentially increasing mortality. This study investigates 23 nosocomial pneumonia cases caused by S. maltophilia, the antibacterial sensitivity of the bacterium and the effect on mortality of suitable empiric therapy. Materials and methods: Twenty-three patients with nosocomial pneumonia caused by S. maltophilia between January 2000 and December 2006 at the Karadeniz Technical University Hospital were retrospectively investigated. Results: Suitable empiric therapy was used with 12 …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Diabetes is a common cause of polyneuropathy. Cardiac arrhythmias and markedly increased mortality rate have been demonstrated in patients with diabetic neuropathy and also demonstrated that abnormally prolonged QT dispersion interval (QTd) is associated with a higher risk of ventricular arrhythmias and sudden death. We investigated the efficacy and tolerability of L-carnitine (LC) in the treatment of diabetic neuropathy and ventricular dispersion, mainly by evaluating the effects of treatment on electrophysiological parameters. Materials and methods: We recruited 30 patients with type I or type II diabetes (mean age: 60 ± 9 years, range: 36-75; 18 males, 12 females) meeting clinical …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

To determine the psychosocial and demographic factors related to marital adjustment and emotional symptoms in infertile couples according to gender differences. Materials and methods: The study sample, consisting of 60 primary infertile couples, was assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory, State and Trait Anxiety Inventory, and Dyadic Adjustment Scale. The scores derived from men and women were compared according to infertility factor. Multiple regression analysis models were used to explore the linkages between emotional symptoms and marital adjustment. Results: Statistically significant gender differences were noted in affectional expression and sexual satisfaction domains of the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (P < 0.05). Our analyses showed that various aspects of marital adjustment have predictive power on anxiety and depressive symptoms of infertile men, especially when the infertility is due to male factor. Conclusion: Results of this study emphasize the importance of psychological and sexual counseling in the course of infertility treatment.

Results: Morphine (1-10 mg/kg) inhibited ovalbumin-evoked increase in microvascular plasma leakage in a dose-dependent manner; however, it had no significant effect at the doses of 0.1 or 30 mg/kg. In addition, morphine, at the doses of 1-30 mg/kg, abolished microvascular leakage increased by capsaicin. The inhibition caused by …

To determine the role of hepatic artery resistive index (HARI) measurement in the prediction of insulin resistance (IR) in obese children with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Materials and methods: A total of 64 obese subjects with NAFLD (13.5 ± 1.36 years of age, 34 male) and 32 age- and gender-matched control subjects (13.8 ± 1.24 years of age, 16 male) were enrolled in the study. All subjects underwent a physical examination, laboratory tests, and ultrasonographic and Doppler examinations of the liver. The homeostasis model assessment of IR (HOMA-IR) was used for the IR diagnosis. Results: Obese subjects with NAFLD …

We aimed to investigate the effects of prepregnancy body mass index (BMI) and excess gestational weight gain on maternal-fetal outcomes. Materials and methods: Obstetrics records of 537 singleton pregnants delivered at our institution were reviewed. According to BMI, the patients were divided into 3 groups, namely, Group 1: normal (BMI 20-24.9 kg/m^2) (n = 394); Group 2: overweight (BMI 25-29.9 kg/m^2) (n = 112); Group 3: Obese (BMI > 30 kg/m^2) (n = 31). According to gestational weight gain, the subjects divided into 2 categories, namely, Group A: 8-15.9 kg weight gain (n = 326); Group B: >16kg weight gain (n …

We aimed to investigate the renal effects of meloxicam, a preferential cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor nonsteroidal antiiflammatory drug, and lornoxicam, a nonspecific cyclooxygenase inhibitor, in rats. We wanted to test the hypothesis that preferential cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors have a higher renal safety profile when compared with the nonspecific cyclooxygenase inhibitors. Materials and methods: Thirty healthy male Sprague-Dawley rats were included in the study. During the study period, 0.9% NaCl, 5.8 mg kg^{-1} meloxicam, or 1.3 mg kg^{-1} lornoxicam were given in 1 mL volumes once daily by the peritoneal route. On day 14, rats were placed in metabolic cages and their urine was …
