Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Understanding the causes of under-five deaths is key to realizing sustainable developmental goals. The aim of this descriptive study was to investigate the causes of under-five mortality in İstanbul during 2011 and compare the findings to those of 1988 and 2000. Materials and methods: All burial records of İstanbul were evaluated, and cemetery records of 1494 children, who died at under five years of age and were buried in İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality Cemeteries between 1 January and 31 December 2011, were analyzed. Predictors Of Health Related Quality Of Life In Childhood Epilepsy And Comparison Withhealthy Children: Findings From An Indian Study, Dipika Bansal, Chandrika Azad, Kapil Gudala, Anil Dasari

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Children with epilepsy have reduced health-related quality of life (HRQOL) due to disease and medications. We aimed to assess child-reported HRQOL in Indian children with epilepsy and compare it with that in healthy children. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study of 256 children with epilepsy aged between 5 and 18 years on antiepileptic drug (AED) treatment for at least 3 months was performed and 125 age and sex matched healthy children were included. A generic version of the Pediatric Quality of Life (PedsQL version 4) scale was used to assess HRQOL. Results: Children with epilepsy had diminished scores in …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The effectiveness of inhaled corticosteroids (ICSs) in cystic fibrosis (CF) is controversial. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of an ICS on bronchial hyperreactivity (BHR), oxidative status, and clinical and inflammatory parameters in CF patients. Materials and methods: CF patients were randomized to receive either 2 mg/day nebulized budesonide or 0.9% normal saline as placebo for 8 weeks. Results: Twenty-nine CF patients (mean age: 10.5 $\pm$ 2.9 years) were enrolled in the study. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups at the end of 8 weeks in terms of symptoms, pulmonary function, …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: IgA deficiency is the most common human primary immunodeficiency. The prevalence of allergic disorders and autoimmunity is thought to be increased in selective IgA deficiency (sIgAD). However, it is currently unclear if these disorders coincide within these families. We aimed to evaluate the frequency of allergic and autoimmune disorders in children with sIgAD and their firstdegree relatives (FDRs). Materials and methods: The study included 81 children diagnosed with sIgAD and 274 of their FDRs. The presence of allergic and autoimmune disorders was evaluated and serum antithyroglobulin and antithyroid peroxidase levels were measured in both patients and their first-degree relatives. …

Evaluation Of Polyneuropathy And Associated Risk Factors Inchildren With Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, Hande Namal Türkyilmaz, Orki̇de Güzel, Selvi̇naz Edi̇zer, Aycan Ünalp

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most common metabolic diseases seen in the world today. Diabetic neuropathy (DN) is a chronic complication of the disease that is rarely reported in children, since it has a relatively longer latency period. Our main objective in this study is to determine the incidence rate of DN in pediatric DM patients and assess the risk factors associated with DN. Materials and methods: Data from 111 patients from January 2011 to May 2014 were reviewed in a retrospective manner. Nerve conduction studies were performed as the gold standard in diagnosis. Results: The incidence …

Detection And Molecular Characterisation Of Adenovirus In Children Under 5 Years Old With Diarrhoea, Meryem Çolak, Gülendam Bozdayi, Ayli̇n Altay, Zahi̇de Yalaki̇, Kamruddi̇n Ahmed, Seçi̇l Özkan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: To determine the frequency, genotype distribution, and genetic relatedness of adenoviruses in children under 5 years old with diarrhoea and to investigate their distribution according to clinical findings, age, months, and seasons. Materials and methods: Stool samples were collected from 180 children with acute gastroenteritis who presented from July 2007 through June 2011 at the Ankara Training and Education Hospital. Stool samples were analysed by immune chromatographic test (ICT), enzyme immunoassay (EIA), and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). All adenovirus types were determined by nucleotide sequence analysis. A phylogenetic tree was constructed by Mega 6.0 using the neighbour-joining method. Results: …
