To evaluate the effects of oxidant/antioxidant mechanisms and levels of trace elements on trauma-stimulated moderate pulmonary contusions after vitamin E administration. Materials and methods: Sixty-three male Sprague Dawley rats were used. Animals were studied in 4 groups. Vitamin E (150 mg/kg) was injected intraperitoneally 30 min after trauma and on the first and second days. Blood samples were obtained for nitric oxide (NO) levels and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities. Zinc (Zn^{+2}), copper (Cu^{+2}), and iron (Fe^{+3}) were measured in serum. Results: Lung contusion increased serum and tissue NO levels and SOD activities and decreased GSH-Px activities …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: To establish the frequency of vitamin and mineral deficiency in children newly diagnosed with celiac disease. Materials and methods: The files of patients diagnosed with celiac disease in our Pediatric Gastroenterology Clinic from June 2008 to June 2013 were reviewed retrospectively. Results: A total of 52 pediatric patients diagnosed with celiac disease via serology and duodenal biopsy and who fulfilled the study criteria were enrolled in the study. The mean diagnosis age of the patients was 8.5 ± 3.9 years and 33 (63.5%) of the patients were female. Vitamin D, vitamin A, vitamin E, zinc, and iron deficiencies were …

Protective Effects Of Erdosteine, Vitamin E, And Vitamin C On Renal Injury Induced By The Ischemia-Reperfusion Of The Hind Limbs In Rats, Rana Sirmali, Abdullah Armağan, Faruk Öktem, Efkan Uz, Aynur Kirbaş, Soner Dönmez, Haci Ramazan Yilmaz, Mesrur Selçuk Silay, Mehmet Sirmali Jan 2015

Protective Effects Of Erdosteine, Vitamin E, And Vitamin C On Renal Injury Induced By The Ischemia-Reperfusion Of The Hind Limbs In Rats, Rana Sirmali, Abdullah Armağan, Faruk Öktem, Efkan Uz, Aynur Kirbaş, Soner Dönmez, Haci Ramazan Yilmaz, Mesrur Selçuk Silay, Mehmet Sirmali

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

To compare the protective efficacy of erdosteine and vitamins C and E against renal injury caused by hind limb ischemia-reperfusion (I/R). Materials and methods: Rats were split into 4 groups: group I as the control, group II as I/R, group III as I/R + erdosteine, and group IV as I/R + vitamins C and E. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities and malondialdehyde (MDA) tissue levels were determined. Results: MDA levels were found comparable with the control group in groups II and III. However, they were considerably decreased in group IV when compared to group II …

The Effect Of Vitamin E And L-Carnitine Against Methotrexate-Induced Injury In Rat Testis, Mehmet Yüncü, Nezahat Bükücü, Nuray Bayat, Leman Sencar, Mehmet Tarakçioğlu Jan 2015

The Effect Of Vitamin E And L-Carnitine Against Methotrexate-Induced Injury In Rat Testis, Mehmet Yüncü, Nezahat Bükücü, Nuray Bayat, Leman Sencar, Mehmet Tarakçioğlu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Methotrexate (MTX), used commonly as an antimetabolite drug in cancer therapy, leads to acute toxic side effects in tissues or organs containing rapidly dividing cells, such as bone marrow, gastrointestinal mucosa, and seminiferous tubules. In this study, we investigated the protective effects of vitamin E and L-carnitine against MTX-induced injury in rat testis. Materials and methods: Rats were divided into 4 groups, including the control group. The study took 17 days and the animals received daily doses of 0.5 mL/kg saline, 250 mg/kg vitamin E, or 500 mg/kg L-carnitine intraperitoneally. The experimental groups received 20 mg/kg methotrexate intraperitoneally on …
