The Relationship Between Thigh Muscle Size And 1rm Squat Strength Among Bodybuilders, Powerlifters, And Olympic Weightlifters, James Dinaso Jan 2003

The Relationship Between Thigh Muscle Size And 1rm Squat Strength Among Bodybuilders, Powerlifters, And Olympic Weightlifters, James Dinaso

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine if a significant difference exists in the relationship between measures of muscle size and strength among elite bodybuilders, powerlifters, and Olympic weightlifters. Fifteen male subjects between the ages of 16 and 48 years participated in the study. All three subject groups, Olympic weightlifters (OWL, n=5), powerlifters (PL, n=5), and bodybuilders (BB, n=5), were highly trained and currently involved in competition training. All test subjects were of similar body weight and weighed between 76-96 kilograms. Measures of body weight, body composition (bioelectrical impedence), shoulder width, thigh circumference (proximal, distal, and mid-thigh), and thigh …

The Surveillance Of T-Lymphocytes In The Human Blood Stream, Ivan Temesvari Jan 2001

The Surveillance Of T-Lymphocytes In The Human Blood Stream, Ivan Temesvari

Masters Theses

T-Lymphocytes (T-cells), one of the many different lymphocytes, are the precursors of disease detection. Their primary purpose is to maintain a healthy immune system. They use the blood vasculature (blood stream) and lymphatic system to circulate throughout the body. Study of a T-cells journey throughout the human blood stream is useful to understand how they can detect disease, such as cancer, in an efficient and effective manner. T-cells are to be thought of as the good cells in our body searching to destroy the bad cells (cancer/infectious cells). The thymus lies in the anterior mediastinum, which is directly behind the …

The Effects Of Xanthine Analogs On Neonatal Rat And Adult Mouse Respiration, Susan M. Reynolds Jan 1987

The Effects Of Xanthine Analogs On Neonatal Rat And Adult Mouse Respiration, Susan M. Reynolds

Masters Theses

Apnea, a prolonged cessation of breathing, is commonly seen in premature infants. This condition, in its severest form, can be lethal and is a suspected cause of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Sometimes referred to as apnea of prematurity, recurrent apnea is presently being treated with respiratory stimulants known as methylxanthines (MX) such as theophylline and caffeine. The benefits of MXs are accompanied by central nervous system stimulation and cardiostimulation which may be detrimental to a premature infant. Theophylline (1,3-diMX) has been shown to produce some of its effects by antagonizing endogenous adenosine. Another xanthine, enprofylline (3-propylxanthine), is presently being …

Effectiveness Of A Video Recorded Ocean Scene Technique As A Relaxation Therapy, David M. Ford Jan 1987

Effectiveness Of A Video Recorded Ocean Scene Technique As A Relaxation Therapy, David M. Ford

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a video recorded ocean scene as a relaxation technique by comparing it with an established method, progressive relaxation training (Jacobson, 1938) on their ability to affect the following physiological measurements: systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, pulse, and respiration.

Thirty female elementary school teachers participated in this study and were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups: Video Recorded Ocean Scene Group, Progressive Relaxation Training Group, and Self Directed Relaxation Group (used as control). The general protocol for each treatment group consisted of a forty minute session with …
