A method for treating ischemia by administering deltorphins to a mammal. Deltorphin I SEQ ID NO:1, delntorphin II SEQ ID NO:2 or combinations of deltorphins I SEQ ID NO:1 and II SEQ ID NO:2 may be administered. A deltorphin concentration of about 0.5-20 mg/kg body weight, or alternatively a lower concentration of about 1-1000 μg/kg body weight of the mammal in a physiologically acceptable formulation is administered up to four hours after an ischemic episode. Deltorphins may also be administered prior to or concurrently with onset of ischemia. Cerebral or spinal cord ischemia or ischemic heart disease may be treated …

Patterns Of Self-Rated Health In Older Adults Before And After Sentinel Events, Paula Diehr

OBJECTIVES: To describe and compare patterns of change in self-rated health for older adults before death and before and after stroke, myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, cardiac procedure, hospital admission for cancer, and hip fracture. DESIGN: "Event cohort," measuring time in months before and after the event. SETTING: Four U.S. communities. PARTICIPANTS: 5888 participants in the Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS), sampled from Medicare rolls and followed up to 8 years. Mean age at baseline was 73. MEASUREMENTS: Self-rated health, including a category for death, assessed at 6-month intervals, and ascertainment of events. METHODS: We examined the percentage that was healthy …

Isolated Caudate Nucleus Hemorrhage During The Acute Period Of Stroke, Selçuk Çomoğlu, Şenay Özbakir

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Caudate hemorrhage is a rare stroke syndrome that accounts for only 3-7% of all primary intracerebral hematomas. In this study, we evaluated eight patients with isolated caudate nucleus hemorrhage for their clinical presentation and neurological findings. Material and methods: Eight patients, who were admitted to our department with isolated caudate nucleus hemorrhage, were evaluated for their clinical presentation and present risk factor findings on neurological examination and prognosis. Results: The most common symptoms on admission were headache and vomiting (five patients), whereas the most common findings on neurological examination were unconsciousness and neck stiffness (four patients). Two patients who were …
