Intraoperative Ultrasound Imaging And Sono-Scintigraphic Concordance Improvessuccess Rates Of Minimally Invasive Parathyroidectomy, Rabi̇ye Uslu Erdemi̇r, İlhan Taşdöven, Taner Bayraktaroğlu, Güldeni̇z Karadeni̇z Çakmak

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of sono-scintigraphic correlation on the success of minimal invasive parathyroidectomy (MIP) via surgeon performed continuous intraoperative sonographic guidance in patients operated for primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) without intact parathormone (PTH) measurement. Materials and methods: A retrospective analysis of a prospective database was conducted to review patients who underwent MIP (July 2017-October 2019). The screened parameters were preoperative PTH level, preoperative ultrasonography (US), preoperative scintigraphy, intraoperative US, intraoperative frozen section analysis, postoperative PTH level, and permanent pathology report. Intraoperative intact PTH measurement was not employed due to institutional policy. Results: Preoperative US alone localized …

Comparison Of Usg-Guided Or Landmark Approach Fascia Iliaca Compartment Blockfor Positioning In Elderly Hip Fracture Patients With Spinal Anesthesia: A Randomizedcontrolled Observational Study, Tuna Ertürk, İbrahi̇m Gündoğmuş, Temel Güner, Cengi̇z Yildirim, Ayşin Ersoy Jan 2021

Comparison Of Usg-Guided Or Landmark Approach Fascia Iliaca Compartment Blockfor Positioning In Elderly Hip Fracture Patients With Spinal Anesthesia: A Randomizedcontrolled Observational Study, Tuna Ertürk, İbrahi̇m Gündoğmuş, Temel Güner, Cengi̇z Yildirim, Ayşin Ersoy

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Currently, the elderly population in the world is rapidly increasing due to technological developments and convenient access to health services. Due to comorbidities in elderly patients, hip fractures are frequently observed after exposure to environmental trauma. To reduce pain during positioning in spinal anesthesia, fascia iliaca compartment block (FICB) can be applied easily and reliably. In our study, we aimed to compare the analgesic effects and duration of fascia iliaca compartment blocks performed with USG guidance or the landmark approach methods for relieving spinal anesthesia position pain. Materials and methods: Our study included 100 patients undergoing operations due to …

Comparison Of The Clinical And Sonographic Effects Of Ultrasound Therapy, Extracorporealshock Wave Therapy, And Kinesio Taping In Lateral Epicondylitis, Tarik Özmen, Sali̇h Süha Koparal, Özlem Karataş, Fi̇li̇z Eser, Bülent Özkurt, Tuba Ümi̇t Gafuroğlu Jan 2021

Comparison Of The Clinical And Sonographic Effects Of Ultrasound Therapy, Extracorporealshock Wave Therapy, And Kinesio Taping In Lateral Epicondylitis, Tarik Özmen, Sali̇h Süha Koparal, Özlem Karataş, Fi̇li̇z Eser, Bülent Özkurt, Tuba Ümi̇t Gafuroğlu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The aim of this study was to compare the clinical and sonographic effects of the ultrasound (US) therapy, extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT), and Kinesio taping (KT) in the lateral epicondylitis (LE). Materials and methods: A total of 40 patients with LE were included in the present study. The patients were randomly assigned to 3 treatment groups: US (n = 13), ESWT (n = 14), and KT (n = 13) groups. Results: The visual analog scale (VAS) scores significantly decreased in all groups (P < 0.05). Grip strength significantly increased after 8 weeks in only the KT group (P < 0.05). The Patient-Rated Tennis Elbow Evaluation Scale (PRTEE) scores significantly decreased after 2 weeks and after 8 weeks in the US group and ESWT groups, and after 8 weeks in the KT group (P < 0.05). Common extensor tendon (CET) thicknesses significantly decreased after 8 weeks in only the ESWT group (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The US therapy, KT, and ESWT are effective in reducing pain and improving functionality. However, none of these treatment methods were found to be superior to others in reducing the pain and improving functionality.

Distribution Of Nuchal Translucency Thickness At 11 To 14 Weeks Of Gestation In A Normalturkish Population, Gülseren Di̇nç, İlker Eyüboğlu Jan 2021

Distribution Of Nuchal Translucency Thickness At 11 To 14 Weeks Of Gestation In A Normalturkish Population, Gülseren Di̇nç, İlker Eyüboğlu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The aim of this study was to determine fetal nuchal translucency (NT) thickness nomogram values in first trimester in a Turkish population and compare them with previously reported European and Asian nomogram data. Material and methods: Ultrasonographic measurements of crown-rump length (CRL) and NT thicknesses were obtained from 11 to 14 weeks of gestation in a normal Turkish population. Pregnant women with singleton pregnancy and fetal CRL between 45 and 84 mm were included in the study. The mean 1st, 3rd, 5th, 50th, 90th, 95th, 97th, and 99th percentiles and fixed cut off values of ≥ 2.5 mm, ≥ …

Impact Of Frailty And Ultrasonography-Based Sarcopenia On The Development Ofpostoperative Complications In Gastrointestinal Cancer Patients, Gözde Şengül Ayçi̇çek, Ti̇muçi̇n Erol, Peli̇n Ünsal, Olgun Deni̇z, Osman Abbasoğlu, Meltem Gülhan Hali̇l Jan 2021

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Gastrointestinal (GI) system cancers are frequent among older adults and it is still difficult to predict which are at increased risk for postoperative complications. Frailty and sarcopenia are increasing problems of older population and may be associated with adverse outcomes. In this study we aimed to examine the effect of sarcopenia and frailty on postoperative complications in older patients undergoing surgery for GI cancers. Materials and methods: Forty-nine patients admitted to general surgery clinic with the diagnosis of gastrointestinal system cancers were included in this cross-sectional study. Frailty status was assessed using the Edmonton Frail Scale (EFS). Sarcopenia was …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: During laparoscopic cholecystectomy operations, increases in intraabdominal, intrathoracic, and intracranial pressures (ICP) can be seen after pneumoperitoneum created for surgical imaging. Orbital ultrasonography (USG), which has been developed in recent years, is a method that can evaluate the ICP by measuring the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) from the eyeball. In our study, we aimed to evaluate whether different intraabdominal pressure values created during laparoscopic cholecystectomy operations correlate with ICP by measuring ONSD. Materials and methods: The study included a total of 90 patients with American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status classification I (ASA I) and II (ASA …
