Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a commonly seen life-threatening condition in newborns characterized by ischemic necrosis. This study aimed to investigate anakinra's effects, an interleukin-1 receptor antagonist, on oxidative stress, inflammation, and tissue necrosis in an NEC rat model. Materials and methods: Forty Wistar albino pups were divided into four groups randomly as follows; group 1, control group; group 2, anakinra-treated control group; group 3, NEC group; and group 4, NEC and anakinra treatment group. The rats were given hyperosmolar formula feeding, and they were exposed to hypoxia after cold stress at +4 °C and oxygen in order to create …

Melatonin Has Favorable Preventive Effects On Experimental Chronic Pancreatitis Rat Model, Esra Guzel Tanoglu, Alpaslan Tanoğlu, Makbule Çi̇sel Aydin Meri̇çöz, Muhammed Fevzi̇ Esen Jan 2021

Melatonin Has Favorable Preventive Effects On Experimental Chronic Pancreatitis Rat Model, Esra Guzel Tanoglu, Alpaslan Tanoğlu, Makbule Çi̇sel Aydin Meri̇çöz, Muhammed Fevzi̇ Esen

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Currently, there is not any specific treatment for chronic pancreatitis (CP). It was aimed to investigate the effects of melatonin administration on endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, oxidative stress, fibrosis, biochemical and histopathological parameters, and Abcc2,Abcc5, and Abcg2 gene levels in an experimental rat CP model. Materials and methods: Forty rats were randomized into five groups: Sham, CP, CP+25 mg/kg melatonin, CP+50 mg/kg melatonin, and CP+placebo. In all rats, except the sham group, a model of chronic pancreatitis was accomplished with intraperitoneal caerulein administration. In treatment groups, melatonin was used as a therapeutic agent. Serum TGF-ß, TNF-α, MDA and GPx …

The Effects Of Iloprost And Beta3 Receptor Agonist On Trpa1 And Trpc1 Immunreactivityin An Experimental Lower Extremty Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury Model, Lati̇f Üstünel, İbrahi̇m Murat Özgüler Jan 2021

The Effects Of Iloprost And Beta3 Receptor Agonist On Trpa1 And Trpc1 Immunreactivityin An Experimental Lower Extremty Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury Model, Lati̇f Üstünel, İbrahi̇m Murat Özgüler

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of antioxidant iloprost (ILO) and ß3 adrenergic receptor agonist (BRL) on transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) and transient receptor potential canonical 1 (TRPC1) ion channels on an experimental ischemia and reperfusion injury model in 30 male Wistar albino rats aged 8-10 weeks. Materials and methods: Wistar Albino rats aged were divided into 5 equal groups. Group I Sham operation, Group II IR (ischemiareperfusion) procedure, Group III IR + intravenous ILO administration, Group IV IR + intraperitoneal BRL administration, and Group V IR + intravenous ILO + intraperitoneal BRL administration …

Transient Receptor Potential Melastatin 2 Ion Channel Activity In Ovarianhyperstimulation Syndrome Physiopathology, Cengi̇z Şanli, Remzi̇ Atilgan, Tuncay Kuloğlu, Şehmus Pala, Bi̇lge Aydin Türk, Hasan Burak Keser, Nevi̇n İlhan Jan 2021

Transient Receptor Potential Melastatin 2 Ion Channel Activity In Ovarianhyperstimulation Syndrome Physiopathology, Cengi̇z Şanli, Remzi̇ Atilgan, Tuncay Kuloğlu, Şehmus Pala, Bi̇lge Aydin Türk, Hasan Burak Keser, Nevi̇n İlhan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a complication of ovarian stimulation with increased vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and vascular permeability in the ovarian tissue. Transient receptor potential melastatin 2 (TRPM2) is known to be associated with angiogenesis and vascular permeability. In this experimental study, we aimed to investigate the activity of TRPM2 in the development of OHSS. Materials and methods: Fourteen immature female rats were divided into two groups. Group 1 was the control group, and Group 2 was the OHSS group that was exposed to 10 IU of subcutaneous application of FSH for four days and 30 IU …

Sodium Valproate Improves Sensorimotor Gating Deficit Induced By Sleep Deprivation Atlow Doses, Muhammet Teki̇n, Fatma Duygu Kaya Yertutanol, Burcu Çevreli̇, Asi̇l Ali̇ Özdoğru, Hamza Kulaksiz, İsmai̇l Tayfun Uzbay Jan 2021

Sodium Valproate Improves Sensorimotor Gating Deficit Induced By Sleep Deprivation Atlow Doses, Muhammet Teki̇n, Fatma Duygu Kaya Yertutanol, Burcu Çevreli̇, Asi̇l Ali̇ Özdoğru, Hamza Kulaksiz, İsmai̇l Tayfun Uzbay

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Sleep deprivation disrupts prepulse inhibition of acoustic startle reflex and can be used to mimic psychosis in experimental animals. On the other hand, it is also a model for other disorders of sensory processing, including migraine. This study aims to assess the effects of sodium valproate, a drug that is used in a variety of neuropsychiatric disorders, on normal and disrupted sensorimotor gating in rats. Materials and methods: Sixty-two Wistar albino rats were randomly distributed into 8 groups. Subchronic and intraperitoneal sodium valproate were administrated to the sleep-deprived and nonsleep-deprived rats by either 50-100 or 200 mg/kg/day. Prepulse inhibition …

Investigation Of The Effect Of Hyperthyroidism On Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress And Transient Receptor Potential Canonical 1 Channel In The Kidney, Nuri̇ye Ezgi̇ Bektur, Erhan Şahi̇n, Sedat Kaçar, Ridvan Bağci, Şeri̇fe Karakaya, Di̇lek Burukoğlu Dönmez, Varol Şahi̇ntürk Jan 2021

Investigation Of The Effect Of Hyperthyroidism On Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress And Transient Receptor Potential Canonical 1 Channel In The Kidney, Nuri̇ye Ezgi̇ Bektur, Erhan Şahi̇n, Sedat Kaçar, Ridvan Bağci, Şeri̇fe Karakaya, Di̇lek Burukoğlu Dönmez, Varol Şahi̇ntürk

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Hyperthyroidism is associated with results in increased glomerular filtration rate as well as increased renin-angiotensin-aldosterone activation. The disturbance of Ca2+ homeostasis in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is associated with many diseases, including diabetic nephropathy and hyperthyroidism. Transient receptor potential canonical 1 (TRPC1) channel is the first cloned TRPC family protein. Although it is expressed in many places in the kidney, its function is uncertain. TRPC1 is involved in regulating Ca2+ homeostasis, and its upregulation increases ER Ca2+ level, activates the unfolded protein response, which leads to cellular damage in the kidney. This study investigated the role of TRPC1 in …
