Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score on the prognosis in patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Materials and methods: The present study was a retrospective study. The CONUT score was calculated based on serum albumin, total cholesterol and lymphocyte levels. This study included a total of 266 patients, 131 (49.2%) were female and 135 (50.8%) were male. The median follow-up period was 51 months (range: 1-190). Results: The median age was 64 years. The cut off CONUT was 1.5. There was a significant difference between patients with high …

Background/aim: COVID-19 patients have a wide spectrum of disease severity. Several biomarkers were evaluated as predictors for progression towards severe disease. IL-21 is a member of common γ-chain cytokine family and creates some specific effects during programming and maintenance of antiviral immunity. We aimed to assess IL-21 as a biomarker for diagnosis and outcome prediction in patients hospitalized with COVID-19. Materials and methods: Patients with a preliminary diagnosis of COVID-19 and pneumonia other than COVID-19 admitted to a tertiary care hospital were included consecutively in this comparative study. Results: The study population consisted of 51 patients with COVID-19 and 11 …

What Is The Predictive Value Of Preoperative Ca 125 Level On The Survival Rate Of Type 1endometrial Cancer?, Şafak Yilmaz Baran, Songül Alemdaroğlu, Gülşen Doğan Durdağ, Seda Yüksel Şi̇mşek, Fi̇li̇z Bolat, Fati̇h Köse, Hüsnü Çeli̇k Jan 2021

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: To investigate the utility of preoperative serum cancer antigen 125 (CA 125) levels in type 1 endometrial carcinoma (EC) as a marker for determining poor prognostic factors and survival. Material and methods: All patients with endometrial cancer, who had been treated between 2012 and 2020, were retrospectively reviewed, and finally, 256 patients with type 1 endometrium carcinoma were included in the study. The relationship between the clinicopathological characteristics, CA 125 level, and survival rates were analyzed. The cut-off value for the preoperative serum CA 125 level was defined as 16 IU/L. Results: The median serum CA 125 levels were …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: A proliferation-inducing ligand (APRIL) has been investigated as a prognostic marker in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) patients. However, there is no cut-off level for serum APRIL (sAPRIL) levels that predict time to treatment in CLL patients. Materials and methods: Between May and December 2012, 94 consecutive CLL patients and 25 healthy controls were assessed. sAPRIL levels were measured by ELISA. Demographic data and prognostic markers were obtained from the patients' files. Treatment-naïve patients were followed up for 6.5 years for any treatment need. Results: Patients were divided into 3 groups: Treatment-naïve (n = 47), chemotherapy receiving (n = 25), …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The prognostic values of systemic inflammatory markers, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) on overall survival (OS) of metastatic renal cell carcinoma patients (mRCC) treated with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) remain unclear. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate the prognostic impact of these markers on OS of mRCC patients. Materials and methods: A total of 150 patients receiving TKIs were retrospectively analyzed. Progression-free survival and OS times were analyzed with the Kaplan-Meier method, and the log-rank test was used for comparison. Univariable and multivariable Cox regression models evaluated the impact of NLR and …

Prognostic Value Of The C-Reactive Protein To Albumin Ratio In Patients Undergoingprimary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention For St-Segment Elevation Myocardialinfarction, Özgür Söğüt, Tarik Akdemi̇r, Mehmet Mustafa Can Jan 2021

Prognostic Value Of The C-Reactive Protein To Albumin Ratio In Patients Undergoingprimary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention For St-Segment Elevation Myocardialinfarction, Özgür Söğüt, Tarik Akdemi̇r, Mehmet Mustafa Can

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: This study investigated whether baseline serum level of C-reactive protein (CRP)/albumin ratio is associated with infarct localization, number of vascular lesions, and in-hospital mortality in patients undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for acute ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Methods: The study population consisted of 116 patients diagnosed with STEMI. The CRP/albumin ratio at first admission, cardiac troponin-I (cTnI), PCI results, and clinical outcomes were recorded. Results: The mean CRP/albumin ratio, cTnI level, and mean number of vascular lesions were significantly higher in non-survivors than in survivors (p = 0.006, p = 0.004, and p = 0.007, respectively). Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Peritonitis attacks of Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) usually requires emergency medical admissions and it's hard to distinguish a typical abdominal attack from surgical causes of acute abdomen. Therefore, history of abdominal surgery, particularly appendectomy, is very common in patients with FMF. However, history of appendectomy might also give some clues about the course of FMF in the adulthood. This study was to determine whether the history of appendectomy help to anticipate disease course of FMF in the adulthood. Materials and methods: All patients recruited from FMF in Central Anatolia (FiCA) cohort, comprising 971 adult subjects. All patients fulfilled the …
