Quantitative Analysis Of Distal Femoral Epiphysis Blood Supply In Healthy Infants Withsuperb Microvascular Imaging: A Pilot Study, Emi̇ne Çalişkan, Muhammed Samed Cansiz, Hati̇ce Ariöz Habi̇bi̇, Mehmet Öztürk

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: This study aimed to determine the blood supply of the distal femoral epiphysis (DFE) using superb microvascular imaging in newborns and infants, and to investigate the correlation with ossification center (OC) length, sex, and age. Materials and methods: A total of 140 cases were evaluated in this study. The cases were divided into 2 groups of less than 90 days and over 90 days. Cartilage blood supply was measured with vascularity index (%) (VI). Results: The mean OC length and median VI values were measured as 10.20 ± 3.72 mm and 0.80% (0.58-1.50) for boys and 10.03 ± 3.36 …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is one of the most important causes of morbidity and mortality in premature infants. Although there are no specific diagnostic tools, the main factors affecting prognosis are clinical and laboratory findings, and early diagnosis and treatment. In this study, we demonstrate the importance of dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) in confirming intestinal ischemia in neonates with NEC. Materials and methods: Patients diagnosed with NEC in a neonatal intensive care unit were staged according to modified Bell's classification, and DECT was performed on patients with NEC stages 2-A, 2-B and 3-A. According to their DECT reports, these patients …

Risk Of Autism Spectrum Disorder In Children With A History Of Hospitalization Forneonatal Jaundice, Gaffari̇ Tunç, Ayla Uzun Çi̇çek, Fati̇h Kiliçbay Jan 2021

Risk Of Autism Spectrum Disorder In Children With A History Of Hospitalization Forneonatal Jaundice, Gaffari̇ Tunç, Ayla Uzun Çi̇çek, Fati̇h Kiliçbay

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Limited research has focused explicitly on the association between neonatal jaundice and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and inconclusive evidence exists in the literature within this framework. This study aimed specifically to investigate whether neonatal jaundice is a potential risk factor for ASD and whether there is a connection between the types of neonatal jaundice and the severity of ASD. Materials and method: This study involved 119 children with ASD [90 males (75.6%), 29 females (24.4%), mean age: 45.39 ± 11.29 months] and 133 healthy controls [100 males (75.2%), 33 females (24.8%), mean age: 46.92 ± 11.42 months]. Psychiatric disorders …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common congenital malformation group and is the leading cause of newborn mortality in developed countries. Most of the infants with CHD develop preoperative or postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI). Acute kidney injury may develop before the serum creatinine rise and oliguria. Urinary biomarkers such as kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1), neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), interleukin (IL)-18, and cystatin C may predict AKI in patients with critical CHD (CCHD) before the serum creatinine rise. In this study, we aimed to determine the AKI incidence among newborn patients with CCHD and investigate the predictivity of …

Neonatal Pneumothorax From The Perspective Of A Pediatric Surgeon: Classification Andmanagement Protocol: A Preliminary Algorithm., Mirzaman Huseynov, Ali̇ Ekber Hakalmaz Jan 2021

Neonatal Pneumothorax From The Perspective Of A Pediatric Surgeon: Classification Andmanagement Protocol: A Preliminary Algorithm., Mirzaman Huseynov, Ali̇ Ekber Hakalmaz

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Current neonatal pneumothorax classifications based on air volume escaping in pleural space have no contribution on the treatment. Therefore, our aim was to classify neonatal pneumothorax to guide treatment management based on our experiences. Material and methods: The records of all neonates admitted to our clinics from March 2017 to August 2020 were reviewed. The patients with pneumothorax were identified through the neonatology department patient database search. The study only included the patients with symptomatic pneumothorax and these patients were evaluated into 3 groups based on the changes in peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2 ) and clinical features immediately after …
