Background/aim: Volume and T2 relaxation time measurements of the skeletal muscle provide quantitative information. We aimed to evaluate the interobserver reliability and the intraobserver reproducibility of measurements of volumes and T2 relaxation times of the quadriceps femoris and the hamstring muscles. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional reliability study was conducted on ten recreational athletes. The images of the quadriceps and the hamstring muscles of both limbs were obtained using a 3.0 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner. Two sports medicine specialists measured muscle volumes from a total of 2560 images and T2 relaxation times from a total of 40 images, …

Materials and methods: This study included 100 pediatric patients (2-10 years old) who had propofol-ketamine and propofol-fentanyl for sedation to undergo MRI. The patients were divided into two groups, and sedation was performed through propofol-ketamine (Group K; n = 50) or propofol-fentanyl (Group F; n = 50). For sedation induction, intravenous (IV) bolus of 1.2 mg/kg propofol and 1 mg/kg ketamine were administered in Group K, IV bolus of 1.2 mg/kg propofol, and 1 µg/kg …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: In this study, we aimed to evaluate whether morphological changes in the mesencephalon, which were previously described as a diagnostic tool for progressive supranuclear palsy, could be associated also with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus. Materials and methods: Consecutive 52 patients with a possible diagnosis of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (32 female, mean age 73.6 years) and 40 controls (23 female, mean age 72.7 years) with similar demographic characteristics were included the study. The morphologic changes in mesencephalon, hummingbird sign, and the vascular compression to mesencephalon were noted. Besides, three independent observers evaluated the imaging parameters for idiopathic normal pressure …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The aim of the present study was to examine and compare the corpus callosum (CC) via histogram analysis (HA) on T1-weighted MR images of patients diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) and healthy controls. Materials and methods: The study group included 19 female patients diagnosed with FND, and the control group included 20 healthy subjects. All participants were scanned with a 1.5 T MR scanner. A high-resolution structural image of the entire brain was obtained with sagittal 3D spiral fast spin echo T1-weighted images. Gray level intensity, standard deviation of the histogram, entropy, uniformity, skewness, and kurtosis values were …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: To evaluate diagnostic efficacy of the apparent diffusion coefficient measurements from tumor (ADCt) and tumor circumference hyperintensities (ADCtch) in different types of malignant intra-axial brain tumors. Materials and methods: Between April 2013 and June 2017, 125 patients (52 females (41.6%) and 73 males (58.4%); mean age: 53 years, age range: 14-81 years), who underwent diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) with intracranial mass, were retrospectively evaluated. The mean ADCt and ADCtch values and ratios were measured. Results: Of the 125 patients, 22 (17.6%) had a low-grade glioma (LGG), 55 (44%) had a high-grade glioma (HGG), 32 (25.6%) had metastasis, and 16 (12.8%) …

Background/aim: The purpose of this study is to compare the diagnostic accuracy and interobserver reliability of the T2-weighted 3D-SPACE (three-dimensional sampling perfection with application-optimized contrasts by using different flip angle evolutions) sequence in comparison with T2-weighted 3D-CISS (three-dimensional constructive interference in steady state) sequences for diagnosis of schwannomas. Materials and methods: Forty patients with cerebellopontine angle (CPA), internal acoustic canal (IAC), and cochlear schwannoma who had undergone magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using the 3D-CISS and 3D-SPACE sequences were identified. The sequences were retrospectively evaluated by two radiologists for the qualitative analyses, which were subsequently compared using the Mann-Whitney U test. …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Carpal tunnel is an important anatomical passage that carries the flexor tendons into the hand. As there is still no consensus about its contents among the anatomy textbooks, the main purpose of this study was to identify the relations of the flexor carpi radialis tendon in the carpal tunnel. Materials and methods: This retrospective study was completed in April 2018 at authors' university's hospital. Seventy-four female and 44 male patients' wrists without any pathology were examined by using magnetic resonance images. The series of axial sections where the pisiform exist were evaluated by using T1 sequence and the structures …
