In this study, we aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics of pediatric patients with AD and identifying the factors associated with the severity of the disease. Materials and methods: A total of 304 pediatric patients diagnosed with atopic dermatitis were included in the study. The patients' age at admission, age at onset of symptoms, the presence of atopy history in their family, eosinophil levels obtained from blood counts were recorded, together with the data of cigarette …

From Asymptomatic To Critical Illness - Different Clinical Manifestations Of Covid-19 Inchildren, Hasan Tezer, Meli̇s Deni̇z

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The global pandemic infectious disease that was named the new coronavirus disease (COVID 19), spread throughout the world, causing a major public health emergency. The causative virus of COVID-19, called SARS CoV-2, can infect all age groups. Various clinical signs and symptoms have been observed in neonates, children, and adolescents during the COVID-19 outbreak. The clinical manifestations of COVID-19 might be different due to the medical conditions and comorbid status in elderly and pediatric patients. The rise in cases among children has been reported during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although infected children generally appear to be asymptomatic or have only mild …

Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome In Children, Selda Hançerli̇ Törün, Di̇lek Yilmaz Çi̇ftdoğan, Ateş Kara

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, children can be infected with the virus that causes COVID-19. Clinical symptoms of children with COVID from China, where the disease was first reported, generally were less severe than adults. However, at the end of April 2020 in Europe, it was observed that some children with SARS-CoV-2 infection developed fever, abdominal pain, shock, myocardial insufficiency and they needed to be taken care of in intensive care unit. This new disease has been called multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). Although the pathogenesis of MIS-C is unclear, it progresses with signs of multiorgan involvement as a …

Background and aim: Point-of-care ultrasound imaging of the inferior vena cava distensibility index is a potential indicator for determining fluid overload and dehydration in the mechanically ventilated patients. Data on inferior vena cava distensibility index and inferior vena cava distensibility variability are limited in mechanically ventilated pediatric patients. That is why our aim in this study was to measure inferior vena cava distensibility index and to obtain mean values in pediatric patients, ventilated in the operating room before the ambulatory surgical procedure started. Materials and methods: This crosssectional study was performed between February 2019 and February 2020. Ultrasonographic measurements were …

Lticentered Study On Efficiency Of Noninvasive Ventilation Procedures(Safe-Niv), Ebru Ati̇ke Ongun, Oğuz Dursun, Ayşe Berna Anil, Ümüt Altuğ, Özlem Temel Köksoy, Başaknur Akyildiz, Serkan Özsoylu, Tanil Kendi̇rli̇, Serhan Özcan, Riza Di̇nçer Yildizdaş, İlknur Tolunay, Bülent Karapinar, Mehmet Arda Kilinç, Demet Demi̇rkol

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: To characterize the clinical course of noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) and high flow humidified nasal cannula ventilation (HFNC) procedures; perform risk analysis for ventilation failure. Material and methods: This prospective, multi-centered, observational study was conducted in 352 PICU admissions (1 month-18 years) between 2016 and 2017. SPSS-22 was used to assess clinical data, define thresholds for ventilation parameters and perform risk analysis. Results: Patient age, onset of disease, previous intubation and hypoxia influenced the choice of therapy mode: NIPPV was preferred in older children (p = 0.002) with longer intubation (p < 0.001), ARDS (p = 0.001), lower respiratory tract infections (p < 0.001), chronic respiratory disease, (p = 0.005), malignancy (p = 0.048) and immune deficiency (p = 0.026). The failure rate was 13.4%. sepsis, ARDS, prolonged intubation, and use of nasal masks were associated with NIV failure (p = 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p = 0.025). The call of intubation or re-intubation was given due to respiratory failure in twenty-seven (57.5%), hemodynamic instability in eight (17%), bulbar dysfunction or aspiration in 5 (10.6%), neurological deterioration in 4 (8.5%) and developing ARDS in 3 (6.4%) children. A reduction of less than 10% in the respiration within an hour increased the odds of failure by 9.841 times (OR: 9.841, 95% CI: 2.0021-48.3742). FiO2 > 55% at 6th hours and PRISM-3 >8 …
