Circulating Mir-29c-3p Is Downregulated In Patients With Acromegaly, Hakan Korkmaz, Kuyaş Heki̇mler Öztürk, Bora Torus

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: miRNAs control various biological functions, such as cell proliferation, differentiation, signaling pathways, apoptosis and metabolism. Recently, it has been shown that there is a relationship between changes in miRNA expression and the development of acromegaly. Studies are needed to identify new disease-specific miRNAs. The aim of the current study is to evaluate plasma miR-29c-3p, miR-31-5p and miR-18a-5p steady-state levels in acromegaly. Another aim is to investigate whether there is a difference in the levels of these miRNAs in patients with inadequate control and controlled acromegaly with somatostatin analog (SSA) therapy. These miRNAs targeting the IGF-1 gene were determined by …

Background/aim: It is known that the presence of fragmented QRS (fQRS) on electrocardiography (ECG) is associated with cardiovascular events. The aim of this study was the evaluation of fQRS formation and its relationship with the left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) parameters in acromegaly patients. Materials and methods: In total, 47 previously diagnosed with non-hypertensive acromegaly patients and 48 control subjects were included in the study. ECG and transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) were performed for each participant. Acromegaly patients were divided into two groups according to the fQRS formation on the ECG. Left ventricular wall thicknesses, and left atrial diameter (LAD), left ventricular …

Background/aim: The known pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus (DM) in acromegaly is mainly based on growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) excess. Fatty acid-binding protein 4 (FABP-4), a novel adipokine, is found to induce insulin resistance and type 2 DM. We aimed to investigate the possible effect of FABP-4 on glucose metabolism in patients with acromegaly. Materials and methods: This case-control study included 28 patients newly diagnosed with acromegaly and 57 healthy volunteers. The patients with acromegaly were classified according to their glycemic status as with DM, prediabetes, and normal glucose tolerance. Anthropometric measurements, laboratory test results, and FABP-4 …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background /aim: Acromegaly is a rare chronic endocrine disorder, the active form of which is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular and metabolic disease. Therefore, early diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases in acromegaly patients are important in terms of morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to determine whether the visceral adiposity index (VAI), lipid accumulation product (LAP), and plasma atherogenic index (PAI) are early cardiovascular risk markers in patients with active acromegaly. Materials and methods: The study included 45 patients newly diagnosed with acromegaly and 45 age-sex matched healthy control subjects. The VAI, LAP, and …

Background/aim: It is known that the increased growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) have mitogenic and antiapoptotic properties in breast cells in acromegaly. Our study aims to evaluate breast findings in patients with acromegaly by comparing them to the control group. Materials and methods: Sixty-one patients followed with acromegaly diagnosis and 180 healthy controls were included in our study. Demographic data, laboratory results, Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) scores, and breast density evaluated via mammography, malign and benign breast lesions evaluated via mammography, breast ultrasonography (USG), and breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of patients were compared to …

Background/aim: The presence of comorbidities in patients with acromegaly causes an increase in morbidity and/or mortality and a decrease in quality of life. In this study, we aimed to investigate the demographic, clinical and laboratory features, prevalence of acromegaly-related comorbidities, and factors associated with these comorbidities in patients with acromegaly. Materials and methods: In the study, 96 patients who were followed up with the diagnosis of acromegaly were included. Clinical, laboratory and imaging features, and accompanying comorbidities of the patients were recorded from the patient files. Results: Of the patients included in the study, 63 (65.6%) were female and 33 …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim : Advanced chronic periodontitis is observed rarely in acromegaly. Periodontal tissue including the alveolar bone is seemed to be spared from the systemic metabolic derangements of bone in this patient population. Chronic elevation of growth hormone, IGF-1, and bone morphogenetic proteins may play a role in periodontal tissue regeneration in acromegalics. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the potential roles of local gingival bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP) in periodontal tissue pathology in acromegaly. Materials and methods: Thirty-five patients with acromegaly and 22 healthy subjects were recruited. All the participants were examined by the same periodontologist for the diagnosis …
