The Effectiveness Of Treatments For Drug-Resistant Epilepsy: A Review Of Literature, Lauren Cummons Jan 2023

The Effectiveness Of Treatments For Drug-Resistant Epilepsy: A Review Of Literature, Lauren Cummons

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Many studies examine the treatment options for epilepsy; however, there is a lack of reviews compiling and evaluating the current treatments for drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE). This project aims to explore the existing body of research studies completed on treating DRE, evaluate the effectiveness of each treatment option, and assess what areas of research need more attention for future studies. Six primary DRE treatments from current research were thoroughly examined for this review. The quality of each treatment was evaluated based on the number of patients who had seizure freedom, had a seizure reduction, had adverse events, and had changes in …

This study discusses the perceived negative effects of variants (C677T and A1298C) of the methylenetetrahydrofolate (MTHFR) gene on male and female fertility and fetal development, as well as the potential for nutrition changes to aid in reversing these negative effects. This research project was completed in order to discuss the possible association with and connection between nutrition and fertility in both male and female individuals who have either of the two most common MTHFR gene polymorphisms, 677C>T and 1298A>C. These two polymorphisms are of particular interest because they are associated with the most decreased activity of the MTHFR …

Tiger Woods' Alif Procedure: Causes And Results, Nathan Martin Jan 2022

Tiger Woods' Alif Procedure: Causes And Results, Nathan Martin

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This project intends to use Tiger Woods as a case study to further study the physiological and biomechanical effects of a spinal fusion. In 2017, and at age 42, Woods received an Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (ALIF) surgery. Less than two years later, Woods was able to return to professional golf. The goals for this research project are to; explain the medical issues that led Woods to receiving this surgery, describe in depth the surgical technique that was used, detail the recovery process that is associated with this procedure, and to examine the change in biomechanics of Tiger Woods’ golf …
