Background/aim: Capecitabine is a prodrug of 5-fluorouracil and has shown significant antitumor activity. The main adverse effects are hand-foot syndrome, diarrhea, and dermatitis. In recent years, hypertriglyceridemia has been reported in patients treated with capecitabine. Dyslipidemia is a rare but important side effect of capecitabine. The aim of this study is to examine the changes in lipid levels during capecitabine treatment and to raise awareness of pharmacovigilance. Materials and methods: In this retrospective study, it was aimed to analyze lipid metabolism after capecitabine treatment and is intended to contribute to the formation of a pharmacoepidemiological database. For this purpose, triglyceride, …

Background/aim: Healthy life style recommendations (e.g., physical activity, healthy diet, and decreased cholesterol levels) play an important role in controlling blood pressure (BP). This study aimed to assess lifestyle modification factors among patients diagnosed with hypertension. Materials and methods: A descriptive-survey design was used. Data were collected using four questionnaires; one was the Beliefs about Medication questionnaire (BMQ) and the rest were developed to collect data about demographic and clinical characteristics and lifestyle modification factors. Results: In total 312 questionnaires were completed. The results revealed that our participants did not follow the healthy lifestyle recommendations; for example, the mean blood …

Background/aim: Almond hull is produced in high amounts and mostly used as livestock feed. This study was designed to examine the impact of almond hull powder (AHP) administration on lipid profile and antioxidant activities in plasma and liver in hyperlipidemic rats. Materials and methods: As the first step, the antioxidant capacity and radical scavenging activity of AHP were determined using calorimetric methods. Then 36 adult male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 6 groups: group 1 with oral administration of 10% AHP, group 2 with oral administration of 20% AHP, group 3 with oral administration of 30% AHP, group 4 …

To investigate the effect of hypercholesterolemia on in vitro contractions of the detrusor smooth muscle stimulated by an electrical field in rats and the relative contributions of cholinergic and noncholinergic neurotransmission. Materials and methods: Sprague-Dawley rats were fed with standard diet (NC group) or with 4% cholesterol diet (HC group). After 4 weeks, the urinary bladder was excised under anesthesia and 4 detrusor strips were prepared. Blood samples were collected for serum lipid profile, and aortic arches were dissected for histopathological examination. In vitro contractile function of the detrusor smooth muscle was evaluated with: 1) electrical field stimulation (EFS) only, …

Plasma Lipid Levels In Patients With Acute Bacterial Infections, Mohammad Nassaji, Raheb Ghorbani
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
To assess the impact of acute bacterial infections on plasma lipid levels and to determine the value of plasma lipid measurements in the diagnosis of acute bacterial infection. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 112 patients with acute bacterial infections admitted in hospital and 112 healthy individuals as controls. Levels of total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, and triglycerides were measured in blood samples of all subjects. Mean levels of serum lipids were compared in both groups. Results: Both groups were matched based on age (P = 0.10), sex (P = 0.789), BMI (P = 0.515), …

Many traditional treatments have been recommended in the alternative system of medicine for treatment of diabetes mellitus. Juglans regia is one of the medicinal plants used in traditional Iranian medicine as a treatment for diabetes, but little scientific documentation supports its antidiabetic action. The purpose of this study was to investigate antidiabetic effect of J. regia leaves in type 1 diabetes induced animal model. Materials and methods: Four groups of animals were selected. Group I animals were fed a normal diet. Animals of groups II, III, and IV received streptozotocin. Animals of groups III and IV were treated with J. …

Aim: The present study was undertaken to investigate the effects of dietary excess of vitamin B_6 on certain blood parameters [serum total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and total lipid] and the cerebral cortex. Materials and Methods: A total of 36 albino rats were included in the study. Saline solution was administered to control groups (CG-10, n = 6 for 10 days; CG-15, n = 6 for 15 days; CG-20, n = 6 for 20 days). The experimental groups (EG-10, n = 6; EG-15, n = 6; EG-20, n = 6) received 5 mg/kg vitamin B_6 daily for 10 …

We showed that butter suppresses metabolic responses to endotoxin in Wistar rats. Responses included increases in plasma caeruloplasmin and liver zinc and protein concentrations, and decreases in plasma zinc and albumin concentration. However, butter lost its suppressive effect at dietary concentrations above 90g/kg diet. The present study examined whether this phenomenon was due to the total dietary cholesterol intake rather than the intrinsic fatty acid composition of butter. Rats received diets, for four weeks, containing either 100g/kg corn oil, 90 g/kg butter, 190g/kg butter, or 90 g/kg butter supplemented with cholesterol to render the latter two diets identical in cholesterol …

In this study, effects of cholesterol and protective effects of vitamin E (vit E) and Selenium (Se) on the morphology of the liver in rats were observed. Cholesterol (Chol) supplemented diet, Chol + vit E, Chol + Se and Chol + vit E + Se were applied to the rats. Portal fibrosis with bile ductal proliferation and an increased inflammatory infiltration were seen in Chol group. In this group, ultrastructurally, granular endoplasmic reticulum (GER) arrangement was seen in irregular shape in hepatocyte cytoplasm. The membranes of GER and mitochondria were not seen clearly. A morphological improvement was seen in the …

The Role Of Serum Lipids On Cyclosporine-Inducedgingival Overgrowth In Renal Transplantpatients, Tunç İlgenli̇, Gül Ati̇lla, Mustafa Ci̇ri̇t, Nezi̇h Azmak
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Cyclosporine-A (CsA) is widely used to prevent organ rejection in recipients of transplanted organs and also in the treatment of various systemic diseases. CsA has a number of side effects, including gingival overgrowth (GO). However, the pathogenesis of CsA-induced GO remains uncertain. It has been postulated that CsA alters fibroblast activity. CsA is transported in plasma by binding to lipid components. It is possible that changes in serum lipid levels could alter the interaction between the CsA and gingival fibroblasts within the gingival tissues. It has also been reported that CsA may alter serum lipid levels in the transplant population. …

Ascites, being an accumulation of excess fluid within the peritoneal cavity, is most frequently encountered in patients with cirrhosis or certain other diseases such as congestive cardiac failure, peritoneal tuberculosis and some primary or secondary peritoneal tumours. This study included 17 patients (5 females, 12 males) with malignant ascites (MA) and 23 patients (13 females, 10 males) with nonmalignant ascites (NMA). We aimed to determinet the values for total sialic acid (SA), pH, cholesterol, fibronectin, total protein concentrations and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity in ascitic fluid for the differential diagnosis of ascites. While total SA, fibronectin, cholesterol, LDH and total …
