Vitamin D deficiency is an important cause of secondary hyperparathyroidism. We aimed to investigate the effect of vitamin D levels on parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels. Materials and methods: We retrospectively chose 2226 patients who were admitted to our hospital’s general internal medicine department for various reasons and had both PTH and vitamin D tests on the same day. Results: It was found that 22.3% of the patients had high levels of PTH and 92% of them had secondary hyperparathyroidism. The average vitamin D level was 16.4 ng/mL. The vitamin D levels of 64% of the patients were below 20 ng/mL …

The status of outpatient irrational prescription drug use before and after pharmacist interventions in 6 large scale hospitals was investigated to determine the underlying reasons and to promote rational clinical drug use. Materials and methods: The 5-step DMAIC method (define, measure, analyze, improve, control) in Six Sigma management was utilized to investigate irrational drug use in prescriptions. The statistical software package SAS9.1.3 was adopted to analyze the results, determine possible reasons that could lead to irrational drug use, and then intervene accordingly. Statistics before and after the intervention were compared to analyze the function and effect of Six Sigma management …

The In Vitro Determination Of Genotoxicity In Peripheral Lymphocytes Of Welders Exposed To Fumes From Metal Arc Welding, Ceylan Şener, Hali̇l Erhan Eroğlu Jan 2013

The In Vitro Determination Of Genotoxicity In Peripheral Lymphocytes Of Welders Exposed To Fumes From Metal Arc Welding, Ceylan Şener, Hali̇l Erhan Eroğlu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Gas metal arc welding is a widely used method in many industrial areas. In this study, the peripheral blood lymphocytes of 23 welders and 25 nonexposed subjects were monitored for genotoxicity. Materials and methods: The blood samples obtained from the subjects were incubated with a culture medium at 37 °C for 72 h. Cytochalasin-B and BrdU were added for micronucleus and replication index. After incubation, the cultures were harvested, stained, and examined. Results: The micronucleus rate (2.165 ± 1.645) of the welders was quite higher than that of those not exposed (1.352 ± 0.978) (P < 0.01). There was a significant difference between micronucleus rates of smoking and nonsmoking subjects. It was found that as the time of exposure to welding fumes increased, so did the micronucleus rates (2.938 ± 1.723) (P < 0.05). A positive correlation was observed between micronucleus frequency and age. The replication index rate (1.026 ± 0.020) of the welders was higher than that of those not exposed (1.019 ± 0.016) (P = 0.01). Conclusion: It is advised that welders who work with gas metal arc welding be instructed and that necessary protective measures be taken because of the risk caused by metal arc welding fumes.

Platelet dysfunction and activation of fibrinolytic cascade are the common causes of bleeding after on-pump CABG. Different antifibrinolytic drugs have been used to reduce bleeding. In this study, we aimed to investigate the efficacy of topical tranexamic acid in reducing postoperative mediastinal bleeding after CABG. Materials and methods: This was a double-blind placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial on 40 patients as the control and another 40 patients as the study group. On completion of CABG before sternotomy wound closure, tranexamic acid (2 …

Impact Of Acute Sleep Deprivation On Aortic Elastic Properties In Healthy Workers, İlyas Akdemi̇r, Gökhan Altunbaş, Süleyman Ercan, Selve Arslan, Vedat Davutoğlu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

People are more frequently exposed to acute sleep loss nowadays due to extensive working. Epidemiologic studies suggest that sleep deprivation (SD) increases the risk of cardiovascular events. Aortic stiffness is also shown to predict cardiovascular events, stroke, and death even in healthy populations. The association between SD and aortic stiffness remains unknown. We sought to determine the impact of acute SD on aortic elastic properties in healthy workers. Materials and methods: The study population consisted of 34 healthy medical personnel working in shifts (17 men and 17 women). Less than half of the mean daily sleep time, or less than …

To evaluate the changes in anterior segment morphometry and intraocular pressure (IOP) with 3D rotating Scheimpflug camera-topography system after uneventful phacoemulsification. Materials and methods: In 56 eyes of 54 patients, anterior chamber depth (ACD), anterior chamber volume (ACV), anterior chamber angle (ACA), and central corneal thickness (CCT) were measured with the Sirius 3D Rotating Scheimpflug camera-topography system preoperatively and 1 month after surgery. IOP was measured with applanation tonometer. The preoperative and postoperative results were compared. Results: Preoperative and postoperative anterior segment parameters were as follows: ACD 2.7 ± 0.4 and 3.5 ± 0.3 mm, ACV 143.6 ± 48.8 and …

To determine whether the total anti-delta antibody enzyme immunoassay (EIA) test results can be used to predict viremia. Materials and methods: The EIA index value of an anti-delta total antibody assay was determined in 76 serum samples obtained from 67 patients positive for the anti-hepatitis delta virus (HDV) antibody. The presence of HDV RNA was investigated by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The relation between the RT-PCR result and EIA index was evaluated by ROC analysis. Results: Of the 76 total samples, 56 (74%) anti-HDV-positive samples were found to be PCR-positive. The samples with EIA index values below 75.75 …

The aim of this study is to compare intraarticular steroid administration and steroid administration with hydraulic distention of the glenohumeral joint in hemiplegic patients who had developed shoulder pain and limitation. Materials and methods: The study consisted of 60 patients attending an inpatient rehabilitation program following a stroke. Each patient had shoulder pain and shoulder limitations . The patients were divided into 3 groups consisting of 20 patients each, according to their order of admission. Conventional physical treatment and rehabilitation (PTR) methods were applied to the patients in Group 1 (control group), conventional PTR and an intraarticular steroid were applied …
