Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Under conditions that may risk the success of flap surgery, free skin grafting may be an option for the reconstruction of the irradiated area. Clinical observations reveal that skin grafts applied to irradiated area undergo ulceration, resulting in chronic open wounds. The role of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) in problem wounds is to increase the tissue oxygen tension to optimize fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis, to enhance the oxidative killing capacity of the white blood cells and to stimulate angiogenesis. HBO has also been shown to stimulate angiogenesis in radiation-damaged tissue. In view of this data, an animal model is …

Mechanisms Of Glybenclamide-Mediated Anti-Arrhythmia And Ischemic Conditionining In A Rat Model Of Myocardial Infarction: Role Of Yohimbine Treatment, Ömer Bozdoğan, Ersöz Gonca, Eylem Suveren Ti̇ryaki̇, Fati̇h Gökçe

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Glibenclamide (Glyburide), a widely used second-generation sulfonylurea hypoglycemic agent, is a known specific blocker of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) sensitive potassium (K+) channels. Although the blockage of the ATP dependent potassium channel reduces arrhythmia, it increases enfarct size. Yohimbine is an alpha-2 blocker that reduces infarct size as suggested by several studies. We hypothesized that a combination of yohimbine and glibenclamide may be more effective in reducing the arrhythmia following ligation. The arteria descendence (LAD) branch of the left coronary artery in conscious rats was ligated and arrhythmia was recorded during the 15 min following coronary ligation. Sixteen hours after coronary …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Thirty-five methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) clinical isolates were collected from 3 hospitals in the northern and southern parts of Palestine between February and May 1998. These isolates were typed by ribosome spacer PCR (RS-PCR) and arbitrarily primed PCR (AP-PCR). RS-PCR generated 9 different genotypes. The use of AP-PCR provided a high resolution typing method and allowed us to define 11 different clusters. Three major clusters, however, based on the combination of both typing methods, spread throughout the neonatal and intensive care units of Rafidya Hospital during the entire period.

Genotoxic Evaluation Of The Antibacterial Drug, Ciprofloxacin, In Cultured Lymphocytes Of Patients With Urinary Tract Infection, Mevli̇t İkbal, Hasan Doğan, Hati̇ce Odabaş, İbrahi̇m Pi̇ri̇m

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Ciprofloxacin is a quinolone carboxylic acid derivative and is commonly used in medicine. The genotoxicity of ciprofloxacin was evaluated in cultured human peripheral blood lymphocytes in patients with urinary tract infection. Sister chromatid exchange (SCE), mitotic index (MI) and replicative index (RI) were measured before and after ciprofloxacin therapy. Our results showed that SCE frequency significantly increased after ciprofloxacin therapy (P < 0.001), but MI and RI decreased (P < 0.001). The results of this study suggest that clinical therapy using ciprofloxacin may have a moderate genotoxic potential.

Cytotoxicity Of Low Dose Epirubicin-Hci Combined With Lymphokine Activated Killer Cells Against Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cell Line Hepatoma G2, Aysun Özkan, Kayahan Fişkin

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Recent evidance supports the concept that Epirubicin-HCI and Lymphokine-activated killer cells (LAK) cytotoxicity may be mediated by free radical and oxyradical generation. We tested this hypothesis further by exposing Hep G2 cells to Epirubicin-HCI and LAK cells and subsequently monitored cell viability as a measure of cytotoxicity. The cytotoxicity of LAK alone and LAK together with low dose epirubicin-HCI (IC50 1/10) which is measured using the MTT cytotoxicity test on viability of Hep G2 cells and sensitization of target cells to effector cells was investigated. The cytotoxicity of LAK (IC50 value of 5LAK/Hep G2 in 24 hours) and LAK+epirubicin-HCI (IC50 …
