Prevalence Of Oral Precancerous Lesions In A Selected Turkish Population, Çağri Deli̇lbaşi, Hakan Akman, Eni̇s Redzep, Ümi̇t K. Akal

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Oral cancers are malignancies that have high metastasis potential and thus survival rate of the patients is low. Today, epidemiological studies are being widely conducted on precancerous lesions, defined as predecessor lesions. In order to investigate the prevalence of oral precancerous lesions among Turkish people, 2000 consecutive outpatients who referred to our clinic for routine dental treatment, were examined. The proportion of lesions with potential to transform into cancer was 4.0%. It was concluded that leukoplakia and lichen planus were the most commonly observed precancerous lesions. All lesions had male propensity and the most affected site was the buccal mucosa. …

Hemodynamic Changes After Aortopulmonary Separation, Ersi̇n Fadillioğlu, M. Kemal Irmak, Murat Yağmurca, Hasan Erdoğan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The neural crest origin of the aortopulmonary septum has led us to investigate the septum. We designed the present study to assess the hemodynamic changes following aortopulmonary separation in the rat. We freed the ascending aorta from the pulmonary artery by blunt dissection and placed aluminium foil between them in anesthetized, ventilated, open-chest animals and found that the procedure resulted in a slight but significant increase in systolic and diastolic blood pressure and in an insignificant elevation of the heart rate. The hemodynamic deterioration observed after the separation process might be a result of a possible function of the aortopulmonary …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

In the present study, a retrospective evaluation of suicides in the province of Eskişehir in 1997-1999 is made. Investigation reports of the Central Prosecutor's Office were obtained and the demographic data of the victims as well as the judicial criteria for the classification as "suicide" were evaluated. There were 94 cases of suicide and 65 of them (69.1%) involved males. Age distribution showed a predominance in the age group of 15-34 years. Suicide in males over 55 years of age occurred more frequently than in females (p < 0.05). Causes of death in suicides included hanging in 68.0% of cases, firearm wounding in 16.0%, jumping from heights in 7.4%, drug intake in 5.3%, railway suicides in 2.2% and butane inhalation in 1.1%; 79.8% of suicides occurred in residences. In 93.6% of the cases, scene investigation reports and drawings were obtainable, while photographs of the scene or of the victim were present in 53.2% of cases. A forensic medicine specialist's inquest had been performed in all cases whilst a medico-legal autopsy had been carried out in only 29.8% of cases. Death certificates were issued following an inquest and scene investigation in 66 cases. Medico-legal autopsies were performed in 73.3% of the cases of firearm wounding, 25.0% of the cases of hanging and 6.7% of suicides committed by other means. In conclusion, we emphasize the importance of a medico-legal autopsy in all suicide cases.

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

In this study we investigated nitric oxide metabolites nitrate+nitrite and lipid peroxidation product (malonyldialdehyde: MDA) related to the pathogenesis of eclampsia and intrauterine growth retarded (IUGR) pregnancy. Plasma nitrate+nitrite levels were higher in the eclamptic (31.6 ± 16.7 µmol/L p < 0.001) and IUGR (24.3 ± 9.5 µmol/L p < 0.005) groups than in the control group (18.8 ± 6.9 µmol /L). Plasma MDA levels were higher in the eclamptic group (5.5 ± 2.5 nmol/ml (p < 0.05) but not significantly different in the IUGR (3.4 ± 2.4 nmol/ml p > 0.05) group than control group (3.0 ± 1.3 nmol/ml). In addition, the plasma nitrite+nitrate and MDA levels in the eclamptic group were higher than in the IUGR group (p < 0.05). These variations could play different roles in the pathogenesis of eclampsia and IUGR pregnancy.
