Hypoxic Stress In Athletes With Sickle Cell Trait, Samantha Elizabeth Reynolds

The purpose of this study was to examine various changes of blood measures in select athletes with sickle cell trait due (SCT) to exercise at different simulated altitudes (n=2). Previous studies have determined that athletes with sickle cell trait have complications in diminished oxygen environments, along with the potential for a lower oxygen carrying capacity with exertion. The study used a Hypoxico Altitude Training System in order to alter the oxygenated environment, and the subjects were evaluated at 2,470, 5,000 and 8,370 feet elevations. Objective: Alcohol consumption accounts for 1 in 10 deaths among U.S. adults, and has cost upwards of $200 billion in a single year due to lost productivity. Alcohol Screening and Brief Intervention (ASBI) was developed as a treatment approach for use in primary care to identify and reduce hazardous and harmful substance use behaviors among the general population. Although ASBI has proven to be successful, implementation rates remain low. Few studies have been conducted in Nevada to encourage or improve ASBI implementation in primary care. The growing concern revolving around the dangers of sports-related concussions have led to the most recent implementation of neurocognitive (NC) test batteries as a means to objectively determine the presence of a cognitive defect. Whereas any other sports-related injury can be diagnosed with tools such as an x-ray or MRI, a concussion represents a metabolic disturbance that cannot be identified by these diagnostic tools. Many neurocognitive test batteries employ statistical techniques to derive cut off scores in order to represent significant or insignificant changes as compared to individual baseline scores, or pre-established normative values.
