A Retrospective Study: Can Dual Art Mitigate The Risk Of Potential Drug-Drug Interactions Among Plwh Under Stable Art?, Ahmet Çağkan İnkaya, Fatma Ni̇sa Balli, Emre Kara, Sali̇h Kutay Demi̇rkan, Serhat Ünal

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: People living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLWH) are getting older. Age-related comorbidities in PLWH result in polypharmacy and increase the risk for potential drug-drug interactions (pDDIs). This study aimed to evaluate how the rate of pDDIs would change if the treatment of patients receiving different combined antiretroviral therapies (ARTs) were theoretically changed with dolutegravir/lamivudine (DTG+3TC) or cabotegravir/rilpivirine (CAB+RPV). Materials and methods: This study was conducted at the infectious disease outpatient clinic of a university hospital as a follow-up of a previous study. The data of PLWH receiving at least 1 comedication other than antiretrovirals (ARVs) were retrospectively reviewed and …

Background/aim: HIV infection increase the risk of serious disease resulting from common vaccine-preventable infections. Vaccinations are particularly important for HIV infected adults. We aimed to investigate the immunity rates against measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis A, B, and tetanus in newly diagnosed HIV patients. Materials and methods: Patients who admitted to outpatient clinics of three centers with newly diagnosed HIV infection, between 1 January 2015 and 31 June 2017 were included. Measles, mumps, rubella, varicella zoster virus, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and tetanus antibody levels were measured by commercial diagnostic kits. Demographical and laboratory data of the patients were recorded. Results: …

Background/aim: The emergence of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak has had an enormous emotional impact on some vulnerable groups, such as people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (PLHIV). This study was planned with the aim of assessing the anxiety levels of PLHIV and the sources of their anxiety. Materials and methods: A web-based questionnaire was sent to PLHIV using the virtual snowball sampling method. The questionnaire included questions about sociodemographic status, information about HIV infection, and the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). Additionally, some opinions of the participants about COVID-19 were asked. Results: A total of 307 respondents, with …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: This study aimed to evaluate the stiffness of the liver, spleen, and kidneys in HIV-monoinfected children via shear wave elastography (SWE).Materials and methods: Twenty-one HIV-monoinfected children and 37 healthy subjects were included in this study. Livers, spleens, and kidneys of the participants were examined via ultrasound and SWE. Patients were divided into two groups according to the presence of pathologic ultrasonographic findings. Routine laboratory tests were also recorded. Stiffness of these organs was compared between patients and control groups. Results: Liver transaminases, blood urea, and creatinine levels were normal in all subjects. Ultrasonographic examination revealed hepatosplenomegaly (n = 1, 4.7%), …

Hiv Infection And Poor Renal Outcomes Following Noncardiac Surgery, Yoshan Moodley Jan 2018

Hiv Infection And Poor Renal Outcomes Following Noncardiac Surgery, Yoshan Moodley

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The relevance of HIV infection in perioperative renal risk stratification remains unclear. This research sought to investigate the impact of HIV infection, as well as other established preoperative risk factors for poor perioperative renal outcome (PPRO), in a population of 565,225 adult noncardiac surgery patients whose data were obtained from the 2009-2011 California State Inpatient Database. Materials and methods: HIV status, established preoperative risk factors, and the study outcome (PPRO) were determined with the Clinical Classification Software codes recorded for each patient. Data were analyzed using univariate (Mann-Whitney U test, chi-square, and Fisher′s exact test) and multivariate (binary logistic …

To determine the frequency with which the CCR5-\Delta32 mutant allele caused resistance to HIV, which is main agent of AIDS in all geographic regions of Turkey. Materials and methods: Randomly selected human blood samples from 400 healthy individuals were collected. The polymerase chain reaction method was used to determine the CCR5-\Delta32 polymorphism and samples were screened using 2 primers. Results: The frequency of wild alleles was found to be 0.9738 and the frequency of mutant alleles was found to be 0.0262. The highest frequency of the CCR5-\Delta32 allele was found to be 0.0726 in the Central Anatolia region. The lowest …
