Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: To investigate the possible relationship between pectoralis muscle (PM) measurement and frailty in older women with breast cancer (BC) (preoperatively defined as stage 1, 2, and 3 diseases). Materials and methods: This retrospective, observational study was conducted at Konya Training and Research Hospital between June and December 2020. A total of 102 patients [median age 62.5 years, median follow-up period two years] were included in the study. PM measurements were obtained from thorax computerized tomography (CT). Pectoralis muscle index (PMI) was calculated by dividing the PM area by the height square of the patients (cm2/m2). Pectoralis muscle density (PMD) …

Background/aim: Recognizing frailty had a great importance in countries with an increasing geriatric population. The study aims to evaluate the reliability and validation of the Gérontopôle frailty screening tool (GFST), which was developed to screen frailty in the community-dwelling older adults, for the Turkish population. Materials and methods: In this crosssectional study, participants who applied to the geriatrics outpatient clinic of a university hospital were included. Comprehensive geriatric assessments of all patients were performed. The validity of the GFST was tested by its concordance with the FRAIL scale. Test-retest and interrater reliability analyses were made. Results: Ninety-six patients were included …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Frailty is an important, multidimensional geriatric syndrome defined as increased vulnerability to stressors. Fried frailty phenotype (FFP) is one of the most widely used models to define physical frailty. The aim of this study is to investigate the crosscultural validity and reliability of Fried frailty phenotype (FFP) in older Turkish population. Materials and methods: A total of 450 patients, aged 59 years and over, were included. FFP translated into Turkish was used. Hand grip strength cut-off values that best predict low skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) for Turkish men and women were calculated. A modified version of FFP was …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Acute kidney injury is strongly associated with mortality in critically ill patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19); however, age-related risk factors for acute kidney injury are not clear yet. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the effects of clinical factors on acute kidney injury development in an elderly COVID-19 patients. Materials and methods: Critically ill patients (?65years) with COVID-19 admitted to the intensive care unit were included in the study. Primary outcome of the study was the rate of acute kidney injury, and secondary outcome was to define the effect of frailty and other risk factors on …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Sleep disorders and frailty increase with advancing age, along with physical disabilities, cognitive dysfunction, mood disorders, and social vulnerability. Thus, the study objective was to evaluate the relationship between frailty and sleep quality in the oldest old patients. Materials and methods: In this study, 100 patients aged ≥ 80 years were assessed using comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) including basic activities of daily living (ADL), instrumental ADL, handgrip strength, the Geriatric Depression Scale-15, the MiniMental State Examination, and the Mini-Nutritional Assessment-Short Form. The sleep quality and frailty status of the patients were evaluated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) …

Impact Of Frailty And Ultrasonography-Based Sarcopenia On The Development Ofpostoperative Complications In Gastrointestinal Cancer Patients, Gözde Şengül Ayçi̇çek, Ti̇muçi̇n Erol, Peli̇n Ünsal, Olgun Deni̇z, Osman Abbasoğlu, Meltem Gülhan Hali̇l Jan 2021

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Gastrointestinal (GI) system cancers are frequent among older adults and it is still difficult to predict which are at increased risk for postoperative complications. Frailty and sarcopenia are increasing problems of older population and may be associated with adverse outcomes. In this study we aimed to examine the effect of sarcopenia and frailty on postoperative complications in older patients undergoing surgery for GI cancers. Materials and methods: Forty-nine patients admitted to general surgery clinic with the diagnosis of gastrointestinal system cancers were included in this cross-sectional study. Frailty status was assessed using the Edmonton Frail Scale (EFS). Sarcopenia was …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Physical frailty is thought to be related with a decline in cognitive function, mood, and social activities, especially in patients with depression and dementia. It is not clear whether or not physical frailty is associated with an impairment in cognitive function and mood in patients without dementia and depression. In this study, we evaluated the association of physical frailty with cognitive function and mood in geriatric patients without dementia and depression. Material and methods: In this study, 612 patients aged 65 years and over were evaluated. Physical frailty was assessed by using Fried criteria. Furthermore, comprehensive geriatric assessment was …

Background/aim: Nowadays, with the rise in average life expectancy, the rate of hospitalization of the older population in intensive care unit (ICU) is gradually increasing. Unfortunately, there are no ideal combination of prognostic factors predicting the mortality in older patients admitted to the ICU. In the present study, we aim to determine the prognostic factors and their impacts on short-time mortality in older critically ill patients. Materials and methods: This retrospective cohort study was performed between January 2019 and February 2020. We included 133 patients aged ≥80 years and hospitalized ≥24 h in the ICU. Results: A total of 133 …
